“Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it.”
- Lloyd Alexander

What Is Writer's Place?

Writer's Place is a place to feel safe as a writer, and to read and share stories. People of all different skill levels are perfectly welcome, whether they only just started writing or have been writing for years.

There's no signing up or registering. You may come and go as you please.

There are also activities for people to participate in.

Rudeness towards other's writings will not be tolerated, as writers of all skill levels are welcome.

There will probably be no prizes, and if there are, judging will be based on creativity and originality, NOT skill level.

Writers can also chat with one another and share any stories, whether they're related to activities or FR or not.

In essence, Writer's Place is a place to hang out and have fun.

Rules:

 • Again, please do not be discouraging towards other people's writings. Of course, constructive criticism is perfectly fine, as long as it is not spoken in a rude or discouraging manner.
 • Chatting and such is perfectly fine, and encouraged!
 • I guess that's it for now, other than the obvious "Stay within FR rules".

Activities

Activities are, well, activities. Each activity will have it's own set of rules and such, of course. I'll be participating in some of these activities.

Even if an activity has already passed, you can still participate and post your writing on it. After all, these activities are for fun and inspiration, there's no deadline.

Here's a list of the activities:

Single-Word Prompt

Once a day, I will try to post a prompt. The prompt will only be one single word. The prompt could be "Sadness" or "Fear" or "Courage" or something. I'll try not to re-use prompts.

People can write a short story based on the prompt.

Picture Prompts

Every two days, I will try to post a picture. (DISCLAIMER: Most of these pictures will be taken off of Google! I might use pictures that I took myself, if I can find any that would work.)

People can write a short story based on the picture.

Character Creation

Every Saturday, I'll post the outlines of a character. It's the writer's job to take those outlines and form them into a full-fledged character with a backstory and such.

For example, the outlines could be:

Twenty years old, rebel, solitary.

The writer would then take the outlines and turn them into a character.

Dungeon Escape!

Every Sunday, I'll post the details of a dungeon room and the tools your character has. It would then be the writer's job to write about the character escaping the dungeon.

For example, the description could be:

The cobblestones of the dungeon smell roughly of mold. There is a skeleton in the corner of the room, and pieces of broken glass litter the floor. Your character has a dagger, a few old berries and a small glass jar. How does your character escape?

The writer would then write about how the character escapes.

Song Inspirations

Once a day, I'll post a song. It is the writers job to write a short story inspired by this song.

For example, I could post Rise, by Skillet. People could then write a short story based on that. (I would, of course, post a link to the lyrics and a YouTube video playing said song).

Write the Story

Once every two days, I will post a small prompt. It's similar to the one word prompts, but these prompts won't be one word. Also, there will be words you must include in your story.

For example:

A mysterious package.

Include: Theater, almond, version, triple, arrow, pathway, man, mangle, drapery, bullet

Events

Events are similar to activities, but rather than happening every day or week or month, they only ever happen once.

For example, and event could be writing about your dragons exploring the Volcanic Vents when they first came out.

Events may not even be linked to events happening on FR or the real world, but just small little things meant for fun.

Past events:

None!

Inspiration

A writer's greatest problem can be inspiration. That's what a lot of these activities are for - to get inspiration and practice.

But let's face it; sometimes it just isn't enough, and you have to get your own inspiration.

What I do for inspiration is I read; I read my favorite books. I get vocabulary and facts and ideas from them. I'm no author (Though I hope to be one someday), and when I sit down and write I can hardly get a page down at once, I find that reading and getting inspiration from my favorite authors and books helps a lot. Seeing other people's magic makes me want to make some magic myself.

I also find that looking at quotes is strangely inspiring.

Go to the internet. Look up a picture of any topic, whether it's airplanes, tigers or oceans. Find a single picture that you like. Write a small story about it, whether it's 500 words or 10000 words. Get ideas and get attached to your characters. Now get another paper - and start a new story entirely, whether it's based on the topic you originally had or not.

Or use your favorite song and write a story based on the song.

Basically, find something that inspires you and get a fresh paper and a new pencil.

Get inspired by something, whether it's a song or book or picture or even just a word.

And honestly? Writing about your real life experiences is great as well.

My best writing was about a real life experience I had; when my dad had a stroke at my birthday party. When I walked outside to see firetrucks. My father sitting in a confused daze on the ground. Going inside and being told he had a stroke. Watching him take his last breaths in the hospital two days later.

I did this at school - every day I walked out of class, I was sad.

But it was the best writing I've ever done, because I could describe the muddled emotions and the tornado of confusion. I never once regretted it. It was like a way to express myself without crying, a way to speak without interruptions. It felt great to write about it, because it was so much easier then talking about it. I'd never talked about it before, because I didn't have the courage - but writing about it was easier for me.

Write and write and write, even if it breaks your heart to do so.

Discord

Writer's Place has a Discord chat!

Rules

The same rules of this thread apply to the Discord. I will make more rules if needed.

Channels

So far, the discord server has two different text channels - "discussion" and "sharing and critics".

The discussion channel is for general chatting and such. The best this is is that it doesn't have to be on topic, really; you can talk about anything, whether it's Flight Rising, writing, video games or anything else.

The sharing and critics channel strictly for writing; there, you can share your writing (If it's too long, preferably a link to where ever it's written, please.). You can also give and receive critics, though the same rules apply; don't be discouraging or rude. I can and WILL kick or ban you from the server.

Roles

There are two different roles; Proofreaders and Authors. Proofreaders are basically the mods. They can delete messages, ban and kick members, etc.

Authors are the normal members, who can message and read messages and such.

The current Proofreaders are:
 • Kuriboh (Me)
 • Chrisondra
 • Aerdan
 • ThePathThatDivides

These are all people that I know and trust. However, YOU can become a Proofreader if you show responsibility in the Discord chat and such.

Joining

To join, click this share link:

https://discord.gg/fkyXBgy

I've set it to not expire, so it should be fine. If something's wrong with it, please let me know so I can fix it.

Since only one person is on the pinglists right now, I'll put two activities in the same post. However, if more people ask to be on pinglists, I'll post activities in separate posts throughout the day. This is because I don't want to ping someone twice in the same post, and I'll have to use both pinglists to ping everyone who wants to be pinged. I'm planning on doing the activities posted every two days on even numbered days (For example, the 6th, the 8th, the 10th, etc.) This is so I can easily remember when to post them. Also, as a note, I'm planning to do an event sometime soon (In a few days probably, to see if more people are interested.) to celebrate the creation of this thread. Another note: Activities from the past can be done, there's no deadline to when activities can be done. @PhoenixMiko Single-word prompts Today's prompt is apocalypse. One that's fairly simple yet creative ideas can easily be formed from this. I'm curious to see how creative people can get on this one. Picture Prompt Since this is the 6th, it's the day for the picture prompt! I'm especially excited for this one. I'm excited to see where this one goes. :)

Single-word prompts

Today's prompt is apocalypse. One that's fairly simple yet creative ideas can easily be formed from this. I'm curious to see how creative people can get on this one.

Picture Prompt

Since this is the 6th, it's the day for the picture prompt! I'm especially excited for this one.

I'm excited to see where this one goes. :)
