Vaenn, Vandr and Vaetta – The Unknown

The trio of dragons came to the Lundlaevungar as hatchlings. Einmyrir discovered them, his ability to see Breath leading him to the three siblings, who had managed to hide themselves in a dense thicket in the Starwood Strand where even the keenest eyes could not find them.

Of their parents, they would say nothing. They would only reveal that they had known no other home than the Starwood Strand.

In fact, even as they grew, they revealed little of themselves. The Clan learned from observation that Vaenn was the fairest and knew it well, spending every spare moment preening at his own reflection, using magic to smooth his mane and tail tuft, polishing his pearl to a brilliant, rosy sheen; that Vandr was full of mischief, always returning home covered in mud and scrapes, full of boasting tales of his exploits; and that love of their sister Vaetta was what held the three together in spite of their differences.

Vaenn and Vandr argued often, particularly as the three entered adulthood. Where Vaenn wanted to learn charms and dress himself in finery, Vandr was of a more war-like inclination, and teased his younger brother mercilessly, deliberately mussing his silks and splattering his fur to provoke him to a fight. The two brawled often, Vaenn employing his magical talents and Vandr his physical prowess to settle their arguments.

Vaetta allowed it, but insisted on reconciliation and apologies from both sides after each bout.

Her skills as a mediator drew attention from both within the Clan and in the surroundings lands. As the three siblings grew older, Vaetta was asked to intervene in local squabbles between neighbouring clans, and then further afield as stories of her success grew. Vandr and Vaenn followed wherever she went, providing magical and physical protection to their sister. Vaenn gained himself a following of admirers in the process, while Vandr enjoyed challenging different clans’ warriors to friendly combat.

It was no surprise when the siblings began to drift away from the Clan, returning only rarely when Vaetta’s skills were not in demand, or Vaenn and Vandr did not have engagements of their own arrangement to attend. They had never been close to their adopted family, only to each other. Eventually, word reached the Lundlaevungar that a messenger dispatched by the Arcanist himself had sent for Vaetta, Vandr and Vaenn, and the trio had answered the call. There was no way to know the truth of the story, but the Clan have not heard from the triplets ever since.

Blodorn, Kousa and Emeralda – The Bloodied

The fearsome Tundra Blodorn was the leader of this little band of mercenaries. The group travelled Sornieth, offering their services to clans in need of additional warriors. They were willing to fight both hostile Beastclans and enemy dragon clans alike, in exchange for a weighty measure of gold.

Despite their high prices they were much sought after by dragons in need of military aid: they had quite a reputation for their bloodthirsty tactics, and their decision to armour themselves in nothing more than their own scales and whatever magical defences they were able to conjure. Blodorn seemed not to feel the many slashes and burns that claws and magic raked over his body, no matter how severe: a fact which terrified his enemies. The Plague-Fae Kousa used his speed and unnaturally small size to his advantage to avoid his enemies’ attacks. However, Emeralda’s gift was the most extraordinary: the Arcane-bright plates covering her underbelly protected her whole body with a shield of pure energy.

She had borne this unnatural mutation since her hatching, and it was this that blazed in Einmyrir’s vision. When the three fighters passed through Lundlaevungar territory, he took his apprentice at the time, an Imperial named Alfruinn, and sought them out. He invited them to come to the Lair – much to the displeasure of Loki and Thor, who found their amoral occupation distasteful.

Blodorn and Kousa took advantage of the Clan’s grudging hospitality, demanding songs and music while they gorged on the food supplies; and while they were distracted, Einmyrir went to work on Emeralda.

The Imperial was flattered by the attention, used as she was to nothing more than coarse innuendoes from her companions and fear from their clients. She listened to his beguiling words, and Einmyrir seduced her with the idea of fighting for the Arcanist.

Later that night, after the rest of the Clan had retired to bed, Emeralda introduced Einmyrir’s ideas to Blodorn and Kousa. At first, the leader resisted, as there would be no more treasure to collect if they joined the Arcanist’s ranks – and, as he told Einmyrir, they were not interested in glory or honour, but rather in blood and battle itself. So Einmyrir described to them the endless battle being waged between the deities, and offered them the chance to join it.

The mercenaries left the next day, with Einmyrir’s directions to the Observatory and bloodthirsty grins stretching their lips.

Kottr – the Clawed
&
Rjomi – the Salve

Kottr was always an excellent embodiment of his natural element, Shadow. Though his bold colours might not suggest a skill for stealth, his patterned hide and dark underbelly allowed him to disappear into the undergrowth with the ease of a born hunter. Combined with his night-vision and his soft tread, this made him formidable as an opponent.

He was drawn to the Plaguebringer’s lands in pursuit of his Charge. After months of scouring the Abiding Boneyard and venturing even to the very brink of the Rotrock Rim, he found him in the Wandering Contagion.

Rjomi was a Plague Fae with a special ability: he could secrete a sweet-tasting, milky substance from his skin that would heal any hurt and cure even the deadliest of poisons. The Clan into which he hatched were fascinated by this mutation and the fantastic healing ability it gave him, and ever since they discovered his usefulness, they used the little Fae for experiments: subjecting him to ever harsher environments and punishments to force his body to produce more of the elixir, which they then took for themselves.

Kottr wasted no time in rescuing his Charge, and the two fled into the Starwood Strand.

They did not get far: once under the cover of the trees, the pair both collapsed: Rjomi unused to such exertion, and Kottr badly wounded from his assault on his Charge’s former Clan. The pair were found by a Lundlaevungar gathering party and taken in.

Rjomi nursed Kottr back to health, but both feared the consequences if they stayed with the Lundlaevungar – or indeed with any clan. Rjomi was well aware of his own value to his parents and their clan-mates: they had made that very clear when they locked him in chains and kept him secret from visitors who might try to steal him away. Rjomi knew they would not stop looking, and Kottr knew he could not allow his Charge to return to such a life.

So, Einmyrir suggested that they seek sanctuary in the Observatory. No dragons devoted to the Plaguebringer would dare to venture within the Arcanist’s sacred halls, and they would be safe. Kottr and Rjomi agreed, and set off together toward the highest reaches of the Focal Point.

Gyrex – The Spoiled

Gyrex left his home in the Viridian Labyrinth and came to the Starwood Strand to learn more of the effects of Arcane energies on plant life: he had heard of the strange nature of the blossoming trees, the luminous flowers, and been drawn to the stories of beauty and mystery.

In his studies he found himself abiding alongside the Lundlaevungar.

Einmyrir was enamoured of Gyrex’s void-black flanks and his plumage of Arcane hues. He thought it demeaning that such a beautiful dragon should settle for a life of hard work, of constant dirt beneath his claws and soil muddying the perfect colours of his hide.

So he began to give Gyrex gifts: it began with trinkets and baubles, fancy things that no gardener could possibly wear. He offered him the assistance of his apprentices, and had them complete the labour that the Nature dragon had once taken great pride in – cutting clippings, digging up roots, plucking weeds and tending plants and trees alike. Gyrex tried to refuse him at first, but Einmyrir was insistent and would not to take no for an answer.

Once Gyrex began to wear the fancy silks and drapes, his objections became harder to voice. The reasons for them were harder to see with his face hidden behind a porcelain mask decorated with feathers, as slowly his eyes bleached from their natural green. Eventually, as the Fae worked his persuasive magic, Gyrex stopped trying to find the strength to argue altogether.

The Starwood Strand and its strange variety of plants held his interest, however. Eventually, the young dragon came to believe that the answers he sought lay in the Observatory – and if they did not, he would be welcome to continue his experiments and observations there.

He set off to join the Arcanist, decked in Einmyrir’s softly glowing gifts.
