Eltanin always knew xer destiny lay in the shadows. From the dark runes on their body, to the moon marking on their wings, xe felt at peace in the eerie stillness of the night. Though, neither their parent, Hydrae, or their sister, Thuban, seemed to share this quiet. Thuban was always yearning to explore or fidget, and Hydrae had no patience for little things like stargazing.

Eltanin discovered xer magic potential early. They’d gotten a hold of a set of dice, and could accurately guess the results most of the time. Sensing something greater, Hydrae used a bit of aer divination potions on them, which revealed that Eltanin was a natural diviner. Realizing xer potential to accelerate their plan, Hydrae quickly began training xem.

Thuban left shortly after this, and Eltanin wasn’t surprised, as they’d seen this in their visions. Hydrae continued xer training, telling them of exploits and dark secrets to unlocking new abilities, and trusting them with caring out aer orders. Eltanin followed Hydrae’s every word, as either praise or attention from them was rare, and this was an easy way to earn them.

Most of this involved stealing trinkets or bits of information from other dragons, which Eltanin became quite skilled at. Tricking others into false futures, charming them out of a few extra coins, it all became a game to Eltanin, one that xe was skilled at playing. Their most prized possessions became a Talonclasp Pendant, and a Regal Masque, that xe’d swiped from a noble dragon. Both were engraved with the name Aureole, but they never figured out who this was.

Some of Eltanin's studies took place at Crestflame Academy, where Hydrae worked. Eltanin never truly enrolled, but xe spent enough time there that most considered them to be a student. They had only one true friend, a fellow skydancer named Lamia, and the two of them mostly trained in magic together.

Eventually, Eltanin foresaw the Shadow Guild taking notice of xem, and decided to take matters into their own talons. Hydrae had an infinite ability to sit and plan, but Eltanin wanted results, much quicker than their parent did. After initially keeping the invite a secret from aer, xe later asked for permission to join. To their surprise and delight, Hydrae agreed.

Moving into their own apartment, much closer to the busy downtown of Waterdeep, Eltanin quickly went to work. Their scams and exploits continued, but quickly grew into something much larger. Commonly mistaken as a noble for their wealth, xe could easily infiltrate large gatherings or parties, learning valuable information for the Guild.

It was at one of these events where they met Maur, an otherworldly imperial with a well-kept past. He had money, but more importantly, he had connections, some even said to the Masked Lords themselves. Knowing this, Eltanin pretended to fall for him, sending him poems that xe’d written in their spare time. He was just another piece in xer game, Eltanin continuously reminded themself. But deep down, xe couldn't help but feel as if xe was lying a little bit.

Late evenings walking in the gardens together yielded both happiness and information for Eltanin, who gave everything xe knew to the Guild. They’d been stuck in Hydrae’s shadow for far too long: it was time for them to write their own future.

And that future involved heirs.
