DAY THREE
[columns]
[nextcol]The lights dimmed and everyone fell silent as the two birds walked onto the small stage the scientists had set up. It was silent, except for the shuffling of tails and the stray cry of a hatchling.
The pink-and-yellow birds were obviously male and female, one much brighter than the other. The male was washed with shades of magenta and bubblegum pink, while on the female, it was restricted to her wings and tail.
The male was totally silent as he twitched his tail, and then began to sing the most beautiful song Dr. Hazel had ever heard. She wasn't usually emotionally affected by great beauty, but a tear escaped her eye.
She watched, transfixed, as the birds sashayed around each other, the male showing off his athleticism by leaping over the female in a fantastic display of swishing tail feathers, all the while singing his song.
It was over almost as soon as it began, and the regular bright lights came on again, breaking the spell that had been cast over everyone.
After a moment's hesitation, the audience broke into applause, just as the scientist who had brought the birds screamed "NOOOOO!" He waved wildly at the sign that said "No Applause" and some immediately stopped, but it was too late.
The birds had bolted from surprise and were circling the ceiling of the building, screeching a cacophonic sound that was completely different from the male's incredible song.
Dr. Hazel snorted and got her net, ready to help the scientist recapture the birds.[nextcol]

Comment (Optional): The male Japanese pufferfish creates massive (compared to his size) elaborate nests in the sand to attract a mate. He must also constantly maintain his nest, or else the current will wash it away.

Comment: Aside from the fact that male octopus typically dies a few months after mating, the female octopus also dies shortly after their eggs hatch. The egg incubation of the Glass Octopus happens on the mother's mantle cavity and takes several months, during which, she stops eating and only focuses on protecting her hundreds of eggs from any danger.
