D) Pounce!
the best way to get the drop on someone is to literally drop on them! if it's a friend we'll of course let them up, but if it's a foe we can keep them pinned if need be
edit: adding in a wyoa here now i've got time and ideas!
wwwCalamity carefully steps off the boat they sailed in on, watching their feet and making sure to keep their belly off the rocks, would be a poor start to the adventure to be injured before it's begun. The other passenger on the boat hopped off the boat to land on Calamity's back, the bogsneak grunting from the sudden weight, and turning to hiss a small growl at their
nocturne companion. Jeff simply shrugged and proceeded to make himself comfortable, perching on Calamity's back. Why put in the effort of being careful of sharp, hot rocks when you can simply ride atop your friends?
wwwPassing by the skeletal tree with the eerie fae, Jeff leans over and whispers in Calamity's ear, "That fae's pretty creepy eh?"
Calamity hisses back in a chiding tone "Don't be rude, you don't know their story."
wwwComing to the mouth of the cave, Jeff is leaning forwards, peering into the darkness of the cave, whilst Calamity keeps an eye out for dangers lurking in the fog, as such the bogsneak is the only one who notices the scuffing of claws on stone, and jerks their head towards the sound, spotting the silhouette. Choosing to "shoot first and ask questions later", Calamity reaches around to grab Jeff, rears up on their hind legs, and throws their startled nocturne turned projectile at the silhouette.
D) Pounce! or i suppose in this case, TACKLE!

JK but that is one spooky well-put-together dragon and scenery and familiar.
D) Pounce!
Gut is 90% sure it will be a fascinating ally instead of Capricat, but hedging my bets that ally forgives me or Capricat is +1 freebie captured.

Minutes was back here again. It wasn't a hard decision - they had long been thinking about a return to the Waste from all the excitement their adventure last autumn had brought, but you'd think they would have considered all the heat and smog more.
---
They stare at the figure for a moment, crouched low close to the jagged ground. It hasn't moved yet. If Minutes acts first, they'll know exactly what they're dealing with - unless some wayward spirits return to bother them. They rear up and shunt the mist away with a hard flap of their wings to reveal the unknown figure [D].

Maneki Neko has taken on the role of herding cats quite literally. As a Nocturne mimicking felines, he finds himself with a special connection to the feline familiars of the clan, making sure they don't get into too much trouble. Soft fur and blazing lava pools do not mix after all!
So when the call goes out to control a massive capricat population boom, Maneki is instantly volunteered to help. He doesn't mind since there's a chance he could make some new friends to take home.
Coming to the cave and finding an unknown figure, he taps into ambush predator instincts and pounces!
(Option D, Pounce!)

Pelagic had seen the posters put up about the capricat outbreak, and decided it sounded like both a good cause to lend a paw to and also just a fun adventure. Accompanied by his best friend, a Maren named Delta, the two approached the path. Passing under Choking's perch, Pelagic did his best to suppress a shudder while Delta, encased in a magic water bubble, hunkered down by his wings. When Choking was out of sight, he tapped Pelagic's neck to get his attention.
"So how likely do you think that was an omen of doom we just passed?"
"Tidelord's sake, Delta, don't even joke about that!" Pelagic groaned. "Now I'm going to be paranoid for the rest of the trip."
"I'm just saying. That dragon was unbelievably creepy," Delta shrugged, moving the bubble near his friend's head.
Pelagic was about to respond, but he realized they were approaching the mouth of a cave. He squinted, trying to see through the mist, but it was too thick to really make anything out. The sudden scuff of claws on stone caught both his and Delta's attention, and Delta wordlessly grabbed Pelagic's horn and turned his head in the direction the sound came from. They could just barely make out a shape in the fog, but it was too hard to see. Giving a quiet huff of frustration, Pelagic raised his wings. Sees what was about to happen, Delta moved his bubble near Pelagic's shoulders, preparing his magic in case things got nasty. Once Delta was ready, Pelagic began to shunt the mist away with a hard flap of his wings to reveal them.

CYOA + WYOC: I will
B) Call out to them in a friendly fashion
and hope that they are, indeed, friendly! (Otherwise this could be a really short adventure LOL)
ETA to add my WYOC response for full set:
Flidais strains her eyes to see through the enshrouding fog. Those horns - could they belong to a Capricat, or to a dragon? Curving backwards like they do, it could even be a Banescale, which would make sense given the nature of the ancient lair she has been sent to investigate. Of course Banescales are still going to be around this area. The question is whether they are friend, or foe?
Well, if she attacks without asking, then they'll automatically turn foe! But if she announces herself first and they are hostile, she'll lose the advantage. She could fan the fog away with her wings to get a better look at the stranger... but then they'll get a good look at her too, and she'll lose the advantage again. In this mist, they might mistake her for a larger or more dangerous type of dragon, and be warier in their actions. Or she can try to flee into the mist to escape, if things turn bad! Of course, she could try to avoid them altogether, and hide behind a rock or in a hole - but that won't get her very far, especially if the stranger keeps hanging around!
In the end, Flidais' honesty, good nature and general optimism win out, as well as a typical Spiral tendency to be impulsive. Enough with all this weighing of possibilities - this isn't the old days of the ancient dragon wars, and she belongs to the Fire flight, which means she has as much right to be here as anyone else. What harm can there be in calling out to a chance-met stranger?
"Hello there!" she calls in a friendly manner. "Are you looking for capricats, too?"
