Breed Out the Ugly II (Koi Edition)
Hi all! After completing my first Breed Out the Ugly Challenge last month, I decided to start a new one with a twist: everyone must have koi.
Wild chaos hatchlings await! And eventually cute ones! Probably!

Here are our founders, Orsinov and Chavi! (Bonus: Chavi is a G6 Naomi, so all the project hatchlings will also be Naomis, which is pretty fun)

Rules:

Go to the AH and purchase the ugliest dragon you can find, typical exalt fodder. They must be triple-gened. This will be your founder.

Find this dragon a mate. The first mate must be similarly ugly; following mates do not have to ascribe to this rule, but must be below 10kt/g in the AH. Optionally, you may use one "freebie" mate who is self-bred fodder rather than AH fodder. (No Scrying Workshop is allowed to help decide—only once you’ve locked in their mate.)

Both founders and all subsequent mates must have koi tertiary.

When they're ready, breed them together. You may cherry pick the heir you prefer.

Find a mate for your heir much like you did for your founder in #2. Repeat as many times as it takes to get a dragon you would permanently keep without gene/breed changes. At that point, the challenge is over and you have won.

Using a gene or breed change on a project hatchling will disqualify them from heirship. Keeping changed hatchlings is allowed but does not count toward project completion.

Hatchlings are here, and against all odds, they're actually kind of cute??
For the eldest, I'm fascinated by how gloom stitched & terracotta koi match:

Gloomy brooding child...gives me YA protagonist vibes

Heir-wise, I'm thinking of going with the eldest. She's the least aesthetic of the trio, but her siblings both got lionfish, which I'm not generally a fan of (even though the youngest wears it surprisingly well).

A bit of a delayed update due to being away on vacation, but Carnival of Rust has grown up and is officially the heir!

And here's her mate Naharvali! (I'm going ahead to use my freebie of a self-bred fodder mate because the prospective mate I got off AH has a longer breeding cooldown and I am impatient lol)
It's probably a good time to talk about my mate selection process & eventual goals. For my first Breed Out the Ugly challenge, I had fairly specific criteria: for the tert, my project hatchlings had runes, which I like in bright colors. So I would search for mates with cyan-robin-aqua terts (either runes or a gem tert that would probably not pass, but it would be cool if it did) and dark blue-purple range primaries that would look good with it.
Koi is super wild though! I don't have any particular target color ranges in mind. For now, I'm just going to freestyle by selecting good-looking mates and hope it rubs off on the hatchlings.

I always do just one hatchling preview to make sure I have the right dragons, and this stunning cub popped up...tbh if I did get someone this nice it'd be over

New hatchlings! A colorful trio. They really don't look like siblings at all.
The firstborn is rocking the Halloween look, featuring eldritch & steel, my two favorite greens that aren't in the green range. Gene changes aren't allowed for this project, but just for fun, here's a scry of her with flair:

The middle child, meanwhile, is cultivating a shoreline serenity aesthetic:

Hatchlings are grown, so it's decision time!
I've been debating what to do about the middle child, Ziminiar, because he's almost very good. Look at this aesthetic lad:

But he could easily be better. I don't like how flat his mane is with saturn. Foam would make it not flat, and would better match his primary AND his scene. I could also throw in uncommon eyes.

He looks so much better that I wouldn't want to keep him without these changes.
Per the rules, gene changes aren't allowed for project purposes...so I think I'm going to make him the heir, breed him, then when he retires from heirship I can mod him freely.
Here's his mate, Sundrop!
After spending a bunch of time on AH looking for fodder kois, I've refined my mate selection criteria:
- No pie/paint. I feel like this is easy mode for koi matching and not really in the spirit of a challenge. Also, the genes are common rarity, so if I ever get on that carousel it's going to be difficult to get off.
- No obs/obs/x. It is a nice look, but it feels too basic, idk. Gotta have zany colorful mates to produce zany colorful hatchlings (I know this is not how the color wheel actually works).
