The Shadowbinder’s offering-well is still, the sky perfectly reflected on its mirror-flat surface. When you stare into its depths, you see nothing but the harrowed eyes of your reflection. Is that you? Or is it what you think you should be? Your doppelganger meets your gaze with shrewd disappointment. You’ve done your best, but couldn’t you have done better? And now you’re here, in the heart of the Wood, to offer a sacrifice just like every other dragon that’s ever been here. What makes [i]you[/i] special? What makes [i]you[/i] more worthy of attention than anyone else? In fact, you’re probably [i]less[/i] worthy. Defeating every beast in the Wood wouldn’t matter if that’s not what the Shadowbinder wanted you to do. What could you throw into the well that would fix that mistake? Your doppelganger leans towards you. You lean in too, your nose almost touching the surface. You can only really think of one thing…
The cold jolts you awake like an electric shock, the grinning teeth of your doppelganger sinking back into the well. You thrash in the darkness, desperate to break back through the surface, but the oil saturates your fur and starts to pull. Your flailing tosses you in every direction until ‘up’ and ‘down’ lose all meaning. You feel something ripple past you, circling just out of reach. You follow it blindly, lungs burning and eyes straining, until a light blooms in the dredges of the well. Its glow falls squarely on two rows of exquisite teeth.

Darkness dissolves you in its clutches, snaking into your nose, your mouth, your ears, and dripping into your heart. The absence of light curdles in front of your eyes. You open your mouth to breathe before you realise that you don’t actually need to do so. The oil no longer clings to your fur, slipping past you like water. The space around you is infinite, but you push forward nonetheless. You don’t need to see to know you’re being watched. Your fur prickles and your nose twitches. The goop stirs against your wings, and you know it’s no Wishkeeper circling you this time. No light blooms, and even if it did, you know it would die quickly in this nothingness. You take a deep breath, brace yourself, and swim upwards.

When you look more closely at the little clouds, you start to see shapes inside them, hovering until the second before you can make them out before disappearing again. How long have you been watching the rain? A droplet lands between your eyes. Your nose twitches. A thousand invisible eyes turn towards the only movement in the forest.
