Through shadows, through the sands of time
Shadow Flight, for many, is different. For the newly arrived, wary dragons-- it can be a foreign wasteland. Seemingly forsaken and forgotten. For the denizens who have been around, it can be a benevolent and generous heaven. Granted one knows how to play their cards right. However, sages of older-wiser inhabitants know better than to let their guard down. The Tangled woods may be their home, but time and the veil of darkness hold harsh lessons for all shadowlings to learn. The cold lessons of the Shadow Mother. Ones that her children come to learn--In simple rules.
For the Tainted shadows---the land of schemes, trickery, illusions, lies and darkness--is about to usher those lessons. To live within the realm of secrets, one has to prove they can survive the tricks. Adapt, shift, learn fast-slink with the stealth of a phantom. Have their eyes peeled, attention on high alert. Have a resilient mind and soul. And much like the clans before them, the Tainted shadows had failed. Now they are faced with the painful truths of their element and land.
For they had grown too naive--falling for the scraps of sweet promises. Thinking peace is eternal and time will not bury them within its sands; Were gullible enough to believe they have strong foundations, know themselves well to withstand. However the last two events, and the current ones rip the cozy rug. Set them scrambling, and along with it...More delusions will be shredded.
Don't let your guard down. Nothing is always as it seems.
The worst, most effective illusion--is the one of guaranteed promises. Of wishful thinking and naivety.
To become one with the surrounding chaotic darkness-- don't fight or try to flee from it.
The first key lesson of the woods is relatively easy to learn. The next one is more difficult to figure out. And the last is the hardest to reach. Listen well to its whispers with a level of caution, follow it with care. One not many denizens, born in the flight or not, hardly know. Very often getting lost because of it. Ancient children know these principles well, but guard their sage knowledge. Laughing at the younger generations of newer Ancients, and modern kin.
The shadow can be a great guide and uncover hidden truths or wisdom.
Dare give it all your faith blindly--it will be a sly mentor and lead you astray.

By standard Pinkerlocke rules, when a dragon reaches level 25, they retire. However, in this iteration of pure brutal madness, the trial isn't over just yet. In the unlikely case where by a miracle the teams survived their journey--I will comb each wave for survivors. And put them into districts in the Hunger games simulator. The ultimate winner returns to my lair.
In newer waves, whenever I decide to start the challenge again, they might be drawn. The other catch is that I keep track of each team's points. So the one with most points-- maximum 308,740 (for the sake of my sanity)--before lv 25 also wins. And is qualified for the endgame trial. Bonus points if the team had managed to get to 308,740 AND also survived to 25.

A familiar received from Pinkerton abides by the tweaked Pinkerlocke rules I made up. gives both me and the teams a bit of break, as it also can be used as a wild card. Since it revolves around the familiars gotten from the Coliseum. This is the only time the "Coli rule is irrelevant" makes an exception.
Heads, the familiar is a messenger going to and fro- the team or a specific dragon gets the chance to pass a letter or word back to the clan. Or another dragon, have a chat with the messenger, etc. depending on the familiar.
Tails, the critter is here to stir havock- Whether by giving a false warning, gossip or something else, they somehow manage to egg the team a little. Thus there is a chance of a brawl in the team. Flip again to see if it escalates or not.
A familiar snatched from the Coliseum allows for a bit of peace. Instead of being a crazy wild card like the familiars from the Pinkerton in the trinket scenario. To quote directly-- Buy the cheapest dragon on auction and promptly slap the fam on 'em. Roll the RNG dice for the breed the new recruit is.

Once again, this rule has a slight tweak and makes an exception in the "Coli loot not relevant". Similar to the familiars rule. However I like giving my own spin on things. What can I say? I can't resist deviating and changing the rules for the challenge.
By default, every time I get a piece of apparel from Pinkerton I am obligated to breed two of my dragons. Slap a new gene, scatterscroll if my budget permits it, the usual. Also I'm obligated to flip a coin for each hatchling in the clutch. Heads? It lives. Tails? It dies and get tossed to the exalted.
But, in the case where I get apparel in the Coliseum-- I spin a lucky wheel trice. Once for if the dragons will breed or not. Spin again for who breeds with whom. If no one breeds, then I write about a blooming friendship. Will friendships grow into romance? Will newer friendships bud? (Aah, the possible scandals.) Team Joy of the dead: Prologue
It has been long harrowing years of endless misfortune and strife for them. The clan of nearly eighty dragons having crumbled down to barely thirty as of today. Or night...? It's very difficult discerning what time is it in the Tangled woods. With all the murk and fog, and whatnot. Typical Shadow stuff. Why or how Regalia had decided the best method of sorting this mess, is to gather in the Coliseum....Well, nobody has a solid clue.
Not even the recently returned demon.
Nobody has a single clue why the priestess had assigned the Aberration to track the tally. And the challenge, but here they all are. Having formed teams of three for the first set of rounds, waiting for the call. Some with dread, some with anticipation and others with interest. Or joy.
On top of that, the disciple had sent out a letter to Sornienth's menace. A week in advance. The Terror of the eleven seas, an old clanmate. This was the sole explanation Regalia gave them all today when they arrived and were organized. And here they are now: Rallied in a wide half-circle. As the blond captain stands besides the ancient dragon with the slips of parchment in the hat he holds. Rummaging through it, all eyes watch the veteran fish out a ticket. Breaths baited in collective silence.
---"Team Joy o' teh dead. Step up, yer first."
The living colorful sea stirs, regains its life. The lucky three emerging, stepping to the fore front. Uta, Ulna and Olunar. The first two females calmly striding another step to fully exit the whispering, restless crowd of campers. While the last girl to emerge skips over to the Serthis, grinning widely. Orange eyes gleaming in excitement. Watching the beastman place the tri-horn cap back onto his head and extend a hand to the two-headed black dragon. Who wordlessly procures three glassy, golden rounded beads. And hands them over to him, placing them in his palm.
With a curt nod as 'thanks', he gives one of the pearl-like orbs to the fiery skinned Skydancer.
---"Take tis charm, will be important. Don't loose it at any cost, savvy?" Taking the offered jewel in her claws, Olúnar'nessa peers at it with great interest. Looking up at the haggard pirate, she poses a question that pops into her mind first.
---"What do these do, I mean-what are they for?" It seems as though it catches him off guard as his brows shoot to his fringe for a second before he answers her anyways. Shooting the dark scaled Imperial a questioning look as he does.
---"These, will be used durin' teh games as a..." A slight pause and the clan's cheerleader creases her brows a bit at him. Sensing his uncertainty, concern and disapproval. Likely directed at the priestess, and also temporary clan leader. Ulna having come to stand next to the upbeat reaper. "Well, a representation o' yer lives. Each time ye get knocked out, tis will crack. Think o' a video game wit lives. Ye die in tis one, ye lose a life."
Glancing over at her team leader, Olunar mumbles a hasty 'Oop! Sorry!' and takes a step back. Letting the younger luminous reaper take her turn rather than clogging up the line. Sauntering over to the border of the Training fields. Turning her head to look at her teammates whom also each take an orb. Uta's question piquing her interest.
---"If the orb cracks and we do truly perish, then how do we get a life back?"
With a sheepish, apologetic, smile the pirate scratches the back of his head. Ruffling the short fanned out mane as he does, shrugging his shoulders. He appears sympathetic.
---"Survive till ye reach a lucky number. On ten, a crack will heal. On fifteen, same thing. Ye get another life. Then, no more heals. At least, not good ones." Scowling, the Mirror heaves a tired sigh and moves to join the cheerful dragon at the border with a shake of her head. Ulnallay calmly takes her own orb and leaves after the duo, all three team members now together. Casting a glance over the Beastclans member when he calls out to them-
---"Good luck mates! We'll be followin' teh games close!"

Day 1: First steps
Flaring their wings, the chosen trio flies up in the sky. Landing in the dry tallgrass of the Training fields, Uta pauses in her tracks. The other two halting mid-stride to crane their necks to look back at her. Watching as the Mirror closes her flaming eyes and bows low to the ground, whispering a prayer to the gods. Voice barely audible over the blowing winds of the night.
After that, she straightens up and marches after her teammates.
Grinning to mask her nervousness and to lift their spirits, Olunar jumps ahead. Fiery wings spread as she twirls in circles on her heels, skipping ahead of them and chirping in a sing-song voice. Hopefully this lifts some of the dread. "Come on girls! We'll be just fine! Come on! Race ya to the rock over there!" And with that, she pretends to race them, when really--she simply runs a few more steps then slows down.
[...]
The battle of their first round starts off rocky and rough.
Ulna takes a quick second to meditate, while Uta covers up with a swift attack. Lunging at the two miths. The blue one side-steps her with ease. She on her own turn does the same. Leaving the Mirror to charge again, after the darker feathered reaper takes out the brawler. For a brief second the trio pauses, share a collective look then resume..Ulnallaly takes another breath, after Uta had hurried to land the first blow. Injuring the bruiser, and, well--Olunar fires her first blast.
The green mith ducks low and dodges, zipping to Ulna and landing a good hit. Invigorated by desire for revenge. Scratching at her shoulder. Her teammate then tries to fight back by lunging at the insectoid. The mith on its own turn jumps out of the way, causing Uta to hiss in agitation. The younger reaper fires back, matching the blow. Her comrade pitching in and slashing at its stomach.
Olunar'nessa simply grimaces as she lifts a wing and shields herself. Preferring to avoid fighting. The mith targets her, naturally. And Ulnallaly brings the round to an end by blasting the beastclans member in the chest.
Walking over to the fallen critters, upon checking their ragged clothes for any pockets...Nothing. No loot to collect. Scowling in displeasure, Uta grips the wings of the first mith--and rips them off. The Reapers watching her with faces of disapproval. Well, no, just Ulnallaly. Olunar could hardly bare to watch, let alone listen to the sickening snapping of bones as her teammate proceeds to rip the wings of the other one. Pocketing the food for later, Uta strides ahead, muttering sourly.
---"At the very least you two have food now. Moving on."
Mutely, the obsidian feathered Skydancer nods and moves to follow her. The other one hesitantly sauntering after her, only to pause and look down at the discarded miths in guilt. Lifting a clawed finger, dejectedly.
---"But..What about them...?"
Without so much of a backward glance the team leader replies calmly.
---"No time for ceremonies, Olu. Come on."
...Oh. Guess the sooner they're done with this the better, huh. Closing her eyes and mumbling a quiet 'Sorry.', she bows low to the limp bodies of the beasts and then hurries after the rest of the team. Not liking to lag or be left behind.
[...]
Second round was also relatively quick. Nothing much happened.
Closing her eyes, Olunar inhaled a deep breath. Focusing on the surroundings and energies. Same does her teammate. Once again Uta is left with opening the brawl. She jumps at the icy furred mouse, nicking it across the face. In retaliation it bites Ulna, who yelps and glares at the thing then blasts it. The rodent also has nothing of interest. So far, two rounds- no points.
And despite Uta's protests, Oluna picks up the few remains: A worn pincushion and some violets. Then they moved on to the next encounter. Round three, a single glowing pocket mouse. A tiny grey mouse. This time, after Ulna meditates, Olunar fires a good blast at the rodent. An attempt to put it out of its miseries.
She only manages to halve its health. Giving her a thumbs up, Uta charges, but her jaws snap at thin air as the rat jumps back. Not many words are shared amidst them. Olunar'nessa simply watches her teammate fire another blast-- the mouse is still kicking. And with dread the older Skydancer comes to realize it's her turn.
Her turn to land the last blow.
But she can't.
Standing there in her spot and staring at the poor suffering creature, she instead backs up a step. And takes a breath. Uta tries to finish it off, gets dodged and Ulna fires a blast. The battle ends.
---"I'll just get some meat for provisions."
The Mirror huffs tiredly, walking up to the little mouse. Lifting a hand and poising a claw to tear it apart. With her whole body quivering like a leaf, Olunar lifts a hand to halt her. Voice shaky.
---"No."
Both dragons turn to look at her worried. She presses on, turning her head away from the rodent. No longer able to even look at it. Too guilty. Once again Olunar shakes her head, thinking to herself morosely as she does.
---"It has suffered enough. Let's...just move along. Please?"
Gods, I'll have so many nightmares tonight, aren't I?
Looking over at their leader, Uta nods in understanding. So, respecting her wishes, the two leave the body alone. Marching forth to the next round. The usually energetic dragoness trailing after them solemn. Taking a few more steps through the gently swaying tallgrass, the younger Luminous reaper halts. Scanning the perimeter, she turns to her teammates.
---"How about we take a break from walking?"
---"Makes sense. Sounds good to me." The plum winged Mirror replies casually, sitting down on her haunches. Curling her long tail around her talons, looking tired from the trip. Looking over the horizon, the older reaper spaces out. Ulna's voice startling her back to reality. And she snaps her head to look at her, eyes wide and blinking owlishly. Noting the concerned look.
---"Olu? You okay there?"
---"Huh? Oh! Oh, ah..yeap. Yeap, just, y'know--slightly traumatized. I'm fine. Heh."
Both dragons give her a dubious look. Not falling for her lie in the slightest. Standing up from her seat, Uta walks up to the upset dragon and flops next to her. Wrapping a glittering wing around her feathery back for a second before withdrawing it to her side quickly. Realizing she's being touchy-feely and the other may not be comfortable with it. Instead settling on placing a hand on her shoulder.
---"Hey, it's okay. It's only natural, you know."
Looking down at her feet, Olunar'nessa responds. Not seeming any better. Instead folding her pinions to her sides. Looking small and vulnerable. Still clearly distraught over what happened. Digging out a small pit that she fills up with dancing flames. Molding her flames to take the shapes of the two miths and mice. Making them dance and prance around the small pit.
---"I know."
The beat of wings drawing closer pulls at the trio's attention. Looking up, they see none other than the silhouette of the dark Aberration. Watching as the Ancient glides down a good distance from them, until it lands on the ground. Padding over to their...heavily humble improvisation for a camp. And on the Ancient's back sits its companion for the games' duration. The man's cheery voice makes Uta snort.
---"Ahoy mates, jus' checkin' up on ye. How teh games are goin'?"
---"Lots of junk but no loot. And we just finished our third round."
Offering a reassuring smile, he replies back.
---"Round five 'r six might 'ave more luck. Keep goin'."
[...]
Round four comes and goes. On round five they finally get their claws on something noteworthy. Just like that Serthis said, albeit in humorous reassurance to raise their hopes up. And cheer them up. It still worked! And this is how the team has just gained a hole five points advantage over the other teams.

Day 2: Team Sweet blades steps up!
For the Joy of the dead, the initial ten rounds were relatively easy to pass. Thank the Gods they got away largely unscathed with two close calls and no casualties. Though Uta still needs to better her aim. And after the game keepers left them to camp in peace, it was time for the next team of adventurers to take the torch. For convenience's sake, the man had given out the rest of the orbs to the rest of the gathered dragons. Thus not having to go back and fourth, and they wouldn't sit around.
Since, every team has taken up their own paths through the tallgrass of the field.
First ten rounds go without any notable loot. Forty more to go. And the next set of rounds go the same way.
The deathstag fires a ball of pollen at the team. It hits Blade squarely the face, with a lot more force than they all could have anticipated. Staggering back, she thumps on the ground, limbs sore. Rising to her feet with a hiss, the Mirror shakes off the sticky dust, spitting more out. On round thirty.
