I used my feminine charm *flutters eyelashes* to get rid of him. I think it was justified. I mean, who stoops low enough to be mean to hatchlings? In fact, it was one of the other hatchlings’ fathers who killed him. I’m not even sorry. She doesn't like her mate and decided to send him on a quest, not telling him what's in store.” —AllisterCrumbs The first egg shivers and cracks, and Hunger bolts upright. She is so tired. It’s been twenty months. Forty mates. One hundred two eggs. “Foam,” she murmurs, shaking her sleeping mate. “The eggs are hatching.” Foam lifts his head groggily from his nest, but when the words register in his mind, his eyes widen and he too leaps to his feet. The two parents watch anxiously as the three Plague eggs rattle until finally, one of the slimy membranes bursts open. A slimy little Spiral crawls from the wreckage, its eyes shut tight and its mouth wide open. Two Mirrors soon follow, stumbling and slipping in the eggy wreckage. Foam watches in awe, but Hunger keeps glancing from the hatchlings to him. She doesn’t know whether the spell has already been broken, or if Foam was going to— No, she couldn’t think like that. She’d fulfilled her side of the bargain. One hundred hatchlings. Was Foam her true love? She didn’t know, honestly. She didn’t know if she was even capable of love anymore. A whisper of a shadow flits across the cavern wall. Hunger looks up at it, heart racing. [i]No. I’ve done everything. I fulfilled my side of the bargain,[/i] she thinks. “Are you okay?” Foam asks, noticing Hunger’s panic but unaware of the shadows gathering in the cavern. “You need to run,” replies the Mirror, starting to shove the Spiral out of the cavern. On the way out of the cave system, Hunger sticks her head into a random cavern and tells whatever bewildered dragon is inside to keep an eye on her hatchlings. “What’s going on?” Foam asks, seeming to notice the shadows following them. In the daylight, the dark streaks floating past them are more visible. They coalesce, forming a dark tornado that funnels rapidly toward the Spiral. He runs, but it is too late. The shadows consume him, and when they disperse, nothing is left behind. Hunger feels her eyes welling up with tears. Collapsing to the floor, she lets out a cry of rage and sorrow. “Why?” she screams at the shadows she can no longer see. “I asked for love. I did everything I was supposed to do. Why do you leave me here, more alone than ever before?” She cries for a while, laying in the sun without even the energy to crawl back into the shade of the cave. [i]It doesn’t matter anymore,[/i] she thinks bitterly. [i]I should just die.[/i] A small peep emits from the cave, followed by another. Hunger doesn’t care. She doesn’t even lift her head from the ground, until— “Oof!” The Mirror grunts as something jumps onto her side, sending her breath shooting from her lungs. She lifts her head to see one of her hatchlings nestling against her warm body. The other two hatchlings soon follow, and Hunger sees one of her older offspring standing in the cave’s entrance, all grown up and ready to travel the world. A wave of pride flows over Hunger, and she nuzzles her hatchlings closer to herself. This is what matters. This is true love.
