I'll be adding more to this post as I complete the challenges (might be a few days).
Challenge 1 Username: @Forestwolf
Introduce yourself:
I chose my username "Forestwolf" because I love wolves and I love the forest. There is a small forested area right behind my apartment with a small stream running through it, so I'm hoping to get some nice pictures of flora and fauna. I used to be a zoologist so I'll identify whatever I find to at least a genus.

Challenge 3. Tree
Entry Virginia Pine (
Pinus virginiana)
https://i.
imgur.com/JNZ024O.jpg
Details These are gorgeous, medium-sized pine trees which do well in poor soil. True survivors, so long as they have ample sunlight.
Challenge 4. Flower
Entry Dandelion (
Taraxacum officinale)
https://i.
imgur.com/QmBtWOY.jpg
Details The lowly dandelion is actually a powerhouse plant. All parts of it are edible and delicious, though the raw leaves are slightly bitter.
Challenge 5. An Unusual Stick
Entry https://i.
imgur.com/sCIcu4B.jpg
Details Don't have much to say about this one, except that it looks like it has antennae.
Challenge 6. Clouds
Entry Cumulonimbus (mostly) https://i.
imgur.com/wj0ZDky.jpg
Details It is surprisingly difficult to take a picture of the sky with my phone while also trying to get my notecard in the shot. In any case, it's about 70 degrees F and the barometer is dropping rapidly as a storm approaches. The sky is darkening and the wind is picking up. Those clouds have overtaken that tiny patch of blue already. I love it.
Challenge 7. Three Different Types of Leaves
Entry https://i.
imgur.com/36Zq2WN.jpg
Details From left to right:
Forsythia sp, Chickweed (
Stellaria media), Dandelion (
Taraxacum officinale). Both chickweed and dandelion leaves are edible.
Challenge 8. Biggest Rock You Can Find
Entry https://i.
imgur.com/2FSaQjr.jpg
Details A big rock. I'm not a geologist so I really have no idea what it is.
9. Something you think is beautiful
10. Sunrise/Sunset
Challenge 11. Feather
Entry Bluejay (
Cyanocitta cristata)
https://i.
imgur.com/8pd2cdv.jpg
Details This gorgeous blue feather was found in the tallish grass in a swail between the small forest and the back of my apartment.
12. Fruit or Berries
Challenge 13. Fungus
Entry Mycena sp.
https://i.
imgur.com/8DuYXL0.jpg
This is a tiny specimen because I missed the main display which peaked yesterday. There were a whole lot of them, which is a shame. Not much to add about this particular mushroom, but many in the Mycena genera are actually bioluminescent, a trait commonly called "foxfire", which is an eerie green glow. Though this one isn't of that species, the bioluminescent ones are really pretty.
14. Lake, Pond River or Stream
15. Animal Tracks or Traces
Challenge 16. Mammal
Entry https://i.
imgur.com/kuYk4CL.jpg
Details This is Elwood, my beloved Chocolate Labrador Retriever. I couldn't snap a picture of a wild mammal lol.
17. Bird
18. Bee, Butterfly, Dragonfly or Moth
Challenge 19. Reptile, Amphibian or Fish Amphibian
Entry American Toad (
Anaxyrus americanus)
https://i.
imgur.com/ql1qNTK.jpg
Details I am so happy! This gorgeous toad decided to visit my patio (it's concrete but leads directly out onto a lawn and from there into the small forest behind my apartment). He actually sat completely still while I placed the notecard and suffered through 3 pictures, including one with a flash.
20. Creepy Crawly
21. Go Litter Picking
22. Go On a Picnic
Challenge 23. Research Invasive Species in your country
Entry Japanese Honeysuckle (
Lonicera japonica)
https://i.
imgur.com/LYrZ1OJ.jpg
Details Though this particular plant has a lovely, heady scent which speaks of summer, it's not supposed to grow in Virginia, sadly. Even so, it does provide a source of food for local herbivores, and humans can eat the flowers as well as enjoy the scent.
24. Grow Something!
25. Feed or Water your local wildlife
Challenge 26. Write a Story (encounter with a cryptid, at least 8 sentences)
One evening as I sat reading in the living room my dog was suddenly alerted to the presence of something outside. I stood and peered through the vertical blinds. It was dark but I could make out a small shape sitting calmly on the porch, peering back at me curiously. I decided to take a chance and flicked the porch light on. There before me sat the most glorious creature I've ever seen.
It had a big fluffy tail, pointed ears, was the shape and size of a fox, but that's where the resemblance ended. This fox-like animal was the colour of moss, and appeared to have fur that was actually composed of moss. Along its back grew tiny mossy sprouts in the shape of stars, the ends of which glowed slightly. The mossfox's large eyes were of a colour that is difficult to describe, as they seemed to shift from a spectrum of hues reminiscent of a moonlit forest: aquas, greens, browns, silvers, the yellow spark of a firefly and the deepest black. As I stood there transfixed, the mossfox rose, winked at me and disappeared, leaving a swirling afterimage of multi-coloured light.
Challenge 27. Describe your walk (at least 4 sentences)
It was early evening, around 8:30 pm, and my dog Elwood and I were walking across a large field. The grass was tall and small white butterflies fluttered among the clover. I picked a nearby dandelion and blew on it, scattering the seeds into the wind, made a wish. A storm was coming, we were getting pelted by tiny raindrops so we decided to head home.
28. Make something using natural materials
Challenge 29. Nature Rubbings (try to do 2)

Image 3 Done! https://i.
imgur.com/vRcV5kd.jpg
Details Cryptid is a Mossfox (my own creation). He is made from Sculpey which I shaped, baked and painted, then I gathered moss from outside, let it dry out for a day and glued it to him.
Challenge 32. Photograph a Cryptid (in its natural setting)
Entry https://i.
imgur.com/extcPUQ.jpg
Details It is storming here so I couldn't really take the picture outside, but according to my cryptid encounter story the Mossfox appeared on my patio, which is where he is shown in the picture.
