Sometimes the primary and secondary are functionally identical, (so not weirdo combos like Butterfly/Petals or Clown/Eyespots), and yet you have a distinct preference/dislike for one of them...
fer instance, take Python/Morph:

They're basically the same thing, right? But I... don't like Morph. For some reason. Python's cool in my book, though.
Or Pinstripe/Trail:

Pinstripe? Sure (except in poses where it makes the snout look cut short). Trail... ehhh.
At least with Tide/Foam

I can say it's probably because Tide doesn't fit the shape of the body as well as Foam does for the wings.
Other genes I have unequal feelings about:
Swirl>Marbled
Jaguar>Rosette
Rings>Octopus
Vivid>Bright

Noxtide: wonderful
Lionfish: uhh

Oh man- I feel the same way about noxtide>lionfish.
The worst one for me though is marble>mottle on banes- marble is so interesting, a bit busy but can look really nice sometimes. But then mottle is barely there in comparison- I just wish it extended across the wings at least part of the way rather than basically just being on the edge.

oh yeah lots
fade < blend
skink > spinner
conveniently, these two have the same accents, and I like one of each pair. when I'm scrying a g1 and going through sets of paired genes, I do skink/blend

cinder << blaze on the majority of breeds. I don't like how cinder is so closely clustered, whereas blaze has better distribution. (however I like cinder/blaze equally on aethers. OGs wear it best)

metallic > alloy. metallic is a gene I like a lot, but alloy is just kinda boring. I tend to like busier/more heavily patterned wings.

Fla/fla for me, whichever one is the primary I dislike (why does the face), but the secondary? Hell yea

I'm rather bad at interacting with people, so if I don't respond to something, I probably don't know what to say. Sorry in advance. FR time +2
i love jaguar but really REALLY hate rosettes.... smh.

I get that, a lot of the time I feel the secondary gene looks better than the primary gene! Not always, but it definitely happens enough - like I think Trail looks better than Pinstripe most of the time, though I do like both genes.

I feel this in my soul.
Many of the gene pairs I like either one or the other, but rarely both.
Sometimes its situational, and what works on one dragon doesn't on another, other times its just preference for the shape of the genes and how they work.
Flaunt/Flair - I really like Flair and how sparkly it is, Flaunt? Ehhh..... I think its the way the 'leg' markings are on it, just rarely like it.
Skink/Spinner - Skink is just better to me? Spinner is okay but not as interesting visually
Without spamming the thread completely, other combos i'm eh towards with either one of the other are;
- Jaguar/Rosette
- Cinder/Blaze
- Tide/Foam (ironically these both work in isolation usually, together is too much)
- Crystal/Facet (same as above, separately great, together ehhh)
- Lionfish/Noxtide - I've never used Lionfish but use Noxtide from time to time.
I think for me most genes are fine in isolation, they usually are too busy when together for the most part as they're too visually similar xD

Yeah I've had that with a few gene pairs. Skink? Awesome. Spinner is... eh ok I guess. Lionfish is alright, but Noxtide? Hooboy that slaps.
I like Clown over Eyespots. I like Loop over Arc. I like Weaver just a smidge more than Orb. Breakup over Mosaic (especially on Gaos). I think I like Cinder more than Blaze, though I can't say I've used them too often myself.
