Honestly, it wouldn't matter to me either way. My eyes immediately go towards the space underneath the pinglist upon clicking the notif, waiting for the image to load in. But maybe it's different for mobile users? I generally don't have to scroll down to see anything unless multiple images were posted.

Once you set up the built in pinglist and eventually 100% swap to it then it won't be an issue. For now I do think it might be nicer to have the current ping list under the image and comment responses, so the image is at the top. Maybe you could try it out for a post or two first and see what people like.
