Maybe there could be a reminder on the site status about the festival ending? Or some kind of a system in grand exchange that you could tick and it would send you a reminder alert on the last day? Or pinglist?

this was my exact thought, i feel like a timer or something could be helpful but i feel like a grace period would just cause the same problem to occur later on

If they have a grace period, players will be just barely missing that instead of the end of the festival. At a certain point, you need to take responsibility and set alarms/reminders for yourself to do things before the end of a festival. I would support an in-game reminder you opt in to, but I don't think a grace period is the best way to solve this problem.

my memory does not do well if i do not have numbers in front of my face for timed events, dates don't stick as easily in my brain.

A timer would be great. Give people an exact, in-your-face number for how much time they have left so they can plan accordingly without having to check timezones.
A grace period would just encourage kicking the procrastination can down the road and likely give people a false sense of security. If you are the sort to wait until the last minute to do something, you will just wait until the new last minute if they add a grace period.

not sure why so many are against a grace period, and some of the personal attacks saying "just plan better" are wholly unnecessary. would be nice to have some extra shopping time for those who need it, and doesn't negatively affect those who don't. :)
i also think a timer would be a positive addition, but for me that would have to be present at the top of the site banner itself and not just in the grand exchange to have any real effect, i'd miss it all the same if only in the GE.
