Which primary/secondary gene pairs are such that you pretty much only ever use one gene of the pair and not the other?
For me there is a few. These are the genes I use of their respective pairs:
- Noxtide. Lionfish gets extremely rarely used due to the striping being too dense/busy for me 90% of the time
- Candy. Pattern on icing bothers me for some reason
- Sugarplum, reverse to the one above, Candycane bothers me
- Streak, no particular reason I just never use Shaggy
- Clown, though only with specific colors.. Eye spots is not really interesting enough for me
- Leopard though rarely, clouded gives me trypophobia issues

Constellation. I can only use Starmap WITH Constellation, or it just looks too strange to me. I have a grand total of 2 dragons that are the exception to this, but that's mainly because they're from when I first started playing and it would feel wrong to change them now.

Savanna. I rarely have a use for Safari, but Savanna is one of my most commonly used primaries.
I also only use Bee and never Wasp.

- skink/blend. they have the same accents, but I like skink way better than fade, and blend way better than spinner
- noxtide. as mentioned earlier, I find lionfish too busy except in specific circumstances (I like it on f nocs, and sometimes with points/ghost to cover up the facial markings)
- basic. I'm way more likely to use a basic primary than basic secondary. I think it's a combination of: (1) more terts cover the body than the wings; (2) I tend to like wings busier/more colorful; (3) stripes works well as a faux basic, but there's no suitable analog for primaries

- jaguar, not rosette. i like the pattern on the body, but for some reason not on the wings
- clown, not eye spots bc of the visual interest angle.
- flair, not flaunt. i do not like how flaunt looks on faces 99.9% of the time. there has been exactly one dragon since the genes released that i liked flaunt on lol
- malachite, not chrysocolla. opposite situation of jag/ros, where i like the pattern as wing markings but on the body it just doesn't do it for me.
- fern, not paisley. same as above. ^
- foam, not tide. i do not actually like the way the palest markings travel up the body and sit on the face.
- bee, not wasp. not a fan of the chitinous seams wasp makes on the body.
...i'm starting to see how so many of my dragons just got bopped with iri and called good enough.

I have a few pairs that I only use one of for various preference reasons.
- Constellation: I LOVE constellation, but Starmap tends to look odd to me.
- Bee: Bee is such a fun gene, but Wasp just looks weird to me.
- Flaunt/Flair: This is a bit different, as I like both genes, actually, but never together. A dragon looks too busy to me if it has both Flaunt/Flair.
Cherub, Clown, Blend, Constellation, Arowana.
Cherub - Seraph to me just looks like it makes the colour muddy and, I dunno, flat and unappealing, while Cherub looks like it provides a nice dark-light combo of the colour chosen. I don't know exactly why.
Clown - Eye Spots to me just feels a bit too sparse, I guess? Clown has a really interesting pattern with nice colour distribution.
Blend - Fade is not my favourite as I don't like where the gradients are placed, it feels off, kinda random, and not centered.
Constellation - Just don't like how the stars and lines look on the body as opposed to the wings. The gradients look nicer there too. Feels like it should be accenting the dragon instead of covering the entire body.
Arowana - Arapaima, I just, don't like it. It's like another Laced/Edged for me, I don't like that scaly crescent pattern. Arowana is a really interesting shape and I quite like it. It shows the colours better too.
I don't really know how else to describe these lol, it might be hard to understand what I'm saying about them, it's so subjective. None of them are so horrible that I'd say I hate them, though.
Cherub and Clown are two of my favourite flatter genes :D

I generally don't have a strong preference within gene pairs but there are a few exceptions:
- Falcon > Peregrine: Love Falcon, not sure if I've ever used Peregrine. They feel pretty different appearance wise. I really like how jagged Falcon is and how it goes down onto the belly and Peregrine just doesn't have the same vibes to me. Idk.
- Pinstripe > Trail: Again the pattern/flow of these two is not the same. I think it's the eyespot part of Trail that makes it harder for me to use, although I don't actually dislike it or anything. Pinstripe just ends up being more versatile generally.
- Fissure > Ground: I don't think I've ever used Ground, but I've used Fissure at least a couple times because I like how you can get a cool color contrast between hair and wings on maned breeds. It darkens the wings and makes the mane lighter, which can be a cool effect.
- Foam > Tide: I don't even know why I use Foam more than Tide, but I do. They are both great genes though.

Echoing a couple of the other mentions here: I tend to only use noxtide, bee, pinstripe. Those all give pretty different effects in their matched gene, and I definitely have favorites! Peregrine and butterfly too, I'd say...
