So, after 5 years of being on this site and dying to try my hand at skins the whole time, I did not realise until this fine morning that you can open psd files in Gimp and I’ve been telling myself “oh but I don’t have photoshop” for Nothing. 5 years. Thanks 888, I have this contest to thank for motivating me to figure it out! The possibilities are now endless! I have decided on a concept for my skin, open to feedback as I have never made one before. The design is “emerald entrails” (I’m very normal about the owl house, I promise) and will be made specifically with my dragon [url= https://www1.flightrising.com/dragon/75814070]Willow[/url] in mind. Currently I’ve only sketched out where I want stuff to go, the actual art will be based on emeralds contained within veins of rock. I've seen [i]tons[/i] of opal skins, bones out the wazoo, maybe even opal bones if we're getting brave! But I knew I wanted to do something different. So I took to a slightly different aspect of crystals than I've seen used in skin contests- a more spiritual side! Stress Fractures is inspired by the 7 chakras, with a crystal according to each chakra. I did my best to match up the chakras with their actual placement! All seven are actual gemstones that I did my best to recreate. I added the cracking ground to symbolize a foundation starting to break, with the extra crystals throughout showing even more instability! [/center] @dems @mythicalviper

Hoo boy... that turned out to be a LOT harder than I was expecting. (I don't know what I was expecting tbh - digital art has always been an uphill battle for me because I don't have a tablet; everything I do is either pixel art or done with a mouse :s) Anyway, this skin has survived being almost thrown in the bin (members of the fire flight discord server can attest to me almost rage quitting at midnight yesterday) and now looks sort of okay. If anyone has any advice or critiques I'd be happy to hear it. As mentioned in my prev post this is my first time touching skinmaking so I am a COMPLETE newbie. I actually intended this to be an accent (as per the concept sketch) but I got super carried away lol. First the horns, then the belly gradient, then the scalloping on the tail, then the giant emerald... it's probably more than 30% now but I haven't checked. That's a job for another day. I'm still clinging to the hope of one day using it though, so it's biding time in a hidden layer at the moment :')

The world record for the largest emerald is 1.25m, making it about the size of a snapper wing :) (It also weighs 536kg!) ----- [/center]I'm still open to suggestions if anyone is so inclined, being my first skin it's far from perfect. I've learned... a ridiculous amount of things you can do with gimp though lol

My second skin design and I decide to go for a linebreaker one ack- Trying to give off tomb-raider covered in sand vibes, but I might end up switching the bones for rocks so she's just a silly rock stealer. I'm not sure yet! I am very much new to the uma scene so if anyone would like to offer criticisms or suggestions, I would absolutely love to hear them!! [center] [b][u]Crystal Caves (?) [/u][/b] - for Guardian M. Concept art: [img]https://i.imgur.com/63Elvgw.png[/img] [b]Explanation: [/b] This skin/accent idea was a bit last minute. I've been going around to the caves in my area for inspiration, and my initial idea was actually a kinda eerie, spooky scene based on an image I took while caving. But as I was drawing, I realized that the gaurdian m's wings could kind of work as the roof of a cave! Moreover, the natural linework underneath the wings could easily be turned into a variety of natural cave features (caves formed by lava flows have many natural looking curves to the rocks as well). I was so excited that I had an actual viable idea that I immediately made this sketch. I wasn't originally going to share my other possible submissions because I realize there's basically no way they'll win, but this is actually really promising and I'm super excited about it! Feel free to offer any critique or comments! I know that this isn't how it's supposed to be submitted as, and the colors are just to get the idea across. But I'm happy to receive critique! [/center]
