I started off with a base theme, my progens being fungus based, as well as any children of theirs that I keep. I try to stick to the scientific names for those though! My flight ambassadors are named for things related to their element, but in various different languages. The rest of the lair is randomized unless I'm struck by inspiration My Custom Progen Cortinarius Named for Cortinarius Violaceus, the Violet Webcap

Most of the dragons in my clan, at least those born into it, get a mix of their parent's names. Essentially, I take a few letters from each and mash em together until they sound cool. If the parent doesn't have a name, I'll use both grandparent's names, and the known parent's name to make one. (In my lore that's achieved through scrying). If the grandparents are also unnamed that side of the family isn't drawn from, and the name is either purely drawn from the existing parents, a non-related parental figure, or some of the letters are chosen at random. One of the earliest examples of this is my boi Lamris. G1's are a different case. They get to choose a name for themselves. Either they can take letters from two dragons they look up to or choose one from any source. Abandoned hatchlings with nameless lineages do this as well. The only G1 to do this so far is Momoiro, who also happens to be the only G1 that hatched on the cliffs. He would have named himself after his adoptive parents, but after talking with one of the founders he settled on an older Japanese word: Momoiro, meaning 'Pink' or 'Peach-like'. Dragons can also change their names using the clan's traditions. There are only two who have done this, Teilr and Gedam, and the clan has respected this change both by using their new names and allowing the old ones to be forgotten. (Their old name is considered a legitimate source of inspiration for a new one, but those two avoided that entirely) There's a few that go against the tradition though, since it's not really enforced, just expected. The three that didn't get names based on their parents are Spruce, Maple, and Oak. Only reason they got these names is because their eggs were stolen by... something and scattered not to far away, under trees sharing the same name. Outside of fan dragons, I typically go with what pops into my head. However, I have a few that I've looked things up for. For example, Larimar and Lophorina were named because their colors and genes reminded me of gems and birds of paradise, respectively, so I looked up types of each and chose ones that fit.

History nerd and lover of dragons! Stay positive, folks!
Feel free to use the dragons in my hibernal den for forums games.
It's a lot by feel! My names are a (pretty standard, I think?) mix of actual words, actual/mythological/place names, and fantasy [s]letterjumbles[/s] names. Sometimes it just comes down to something like, "I think this guy would have two Rs in his name," and trying things out until one clicks. English words are my most common naming method! They're fun, they're easy, they usually carry some readily apparent meanings. And it's kind of nice to take a moment to appreciate how interesting some of them can be on their own. [emoji=book 2 size=1] (Fane, Cyst, Weft, Tariff, Barrow, Minnow, Dewclaw, Pith, Motley) I just realized that I do often try to match parents' naming conventions, at least a little. Rotmaw gets a descriptive compound name like his dad Thunderhead. Gurrok gets a jagged, forceful name like her mom Lothak. [emoji=scroll 2 size=1] I also keep a running list of candidate names that I add to whenever a new one pops into my head. I've named a few dragons from it since starting! Some of those names might also serve as inspiration for dragons I'd like to get in the future, too. [emoji=paintbrush size=1] As for a name story, I knew what I wanted to name Bugwash instantly: It hit me like a truck. It was so very silly and slightly gross, and yet? It really fit him? You win this one, subconscious.

I guess it depends. A lot that came pre-named I just leave that way; feels like they’re coming from their own cultures and regions that way! Otherwise I like naming dragons after things I find cool, like herbs or stars or weather conditions. It also turns out I have a surprising amount of dragons named after Italian names or words—Scirocco, Aurelio, Alba, and Amarone—so I’m not sure what that says about me, lol

I take the naming of my dragons somewhat seriously, some names I just think are cute and fit the dragons, for others I sometimes take from my favorite manga or book characters. If it's hatchlings, I'll theme them together, or I like to name one hatching and then look for baby names starting with the same letter. This one website I use has over thousands to choose from. I usually go for unique or pretty sounding names~ like this one is called Trismegistus, and I couldn't imagine that another name would fit him. I do a lot of myth or etymology based names. Especially for my themed dragons (gems and metals xxx). 80% of the time, i just take whatever book i'm reading, pick a name or word that I like from it, and use that. typically my dragons don't end up at all similar to their namesakes, like in the case of celehar (whose name is taken from a character in the book The Goblin Emperor): But sometimes, I'll pick a name from a book because I think it resonates thematically with my dragon, which is the case for Talos, whose name is a mythological reference but was mostly inspired by a character in The Book of the New Sun: A few of my dragons have names lifted from Greek tragedy, and their characters tend to be closer to their inspirations, for example, Cassandre: And then I have a couple of dragons with random word names for various reasons, such as Charis, who was the first non-progen dragon I bought and whose name is related to (but not the same as) my own name. I pick two edgy words and combine them, or I look up fancy-sounding synonyms for said words.

I usually take mythological names from different religions.
Other times I just search up cool names that have the meaning of the aestehtic I'm going for. Like my dragon who represents love is named Amatus after the latin word amare for it.
