Because Droolmum is the coolest of the gods (just look at their like number).

Edgy is a strong assumption but it’s also people who like the lore, the color and the aesthetic of it.

For me it was the gaming lore. I didn't like the "win no matter what it takes" component, but I still decided on Shadow as my first flight. There's a higher-than-average chance that people who are playing an online game would identify as gamers, so I imagine it appeals to a disproportionately large amount of people (compared to a less biased sample of the population).
Back when the Dominance board had the old look with the detailed flight backgrounds for the flight that was currently in first for the week, Shadow's one with the glowing mushrooms was also my favorite. I found it very pretty and soothing.

as someone who's 2nd fave element is shadow for me it's is absolutely the edgy darkness. i'm in plague and in my lore literally everyone is a villain somehow, so the edgy vibes of shadow would also very much fit. also the primal eyes in shadow are sooooo neat. i love the goop vibes.

I really like the shadows purple eye colors, and its trickster lore!
Planning on vacationing to shadow one day.

Shadow has a cross-section of many aesthetics, in my opinion.
Tricksters and moral greyness? Sure!
Bioluminescent forests and wildlife? Also got that
Edge? Also yes.
It has a very typical "faerie" vibe. Pretty and whimsical on the surface, tricks and horror underneath. So there's many different ways to approach it in lore.
It's also a popular colour scheme. Purples, blacks, with some blue...
