Why is he among the rare ones that had to be carried back before the end? Why do even the weakest, youngest recruits surpass him while he holds up the last position? Nobody laughed. Nobody even dared to say anything at all. Mirrors stay together even when there are weak links amongst them, but he knew full well he was one even without being reminded of it. And the shame he felt for it stopped him from ever looking at himself. He simply couldn't stand that weak snout of his. Luckily, this world also knew magic. Potions. Forces beyond the understanding of most, yet forces that existed to be used and twisted, to help or to harm. He would use it to help himself. A sip of something cold, and already he could feel the change; while it froze his insides on its way down, his deplorably soft skin hardened before his very eyes. He stood still, awed, and stared at the angles of his reflection. Piece by piece, limb by limb, it became similar to stone, but with more shine to it. It was akin to a crystal, and he felt like he'd need a new name, one more fitting to his new appearance. But there would be time later to think about that. First, he needs to prove himself, and what better time than tomorrow's battle? [center]---[/center] Finally, he's not how he used to be. He's a new Mirror now, a new warrior, one to soon lead his own troop into battle! Now he only needs to guard his eyes, but they are a minor target compared to the glint of his strong body and thus hard to reach. Before you even get close enough, Bauxite will already be at your neck and you'll be gone in a blink of an eye. Finally he gets to enjoy the spoils of war with the rest and even receive some well-deserved and desired attention from the opposite sex. Except... His hind foot... Something's not quite right with it. It drags itself ever so slightly and it somehow feels stiff, like a sprained muscle or a cramp in passing. He shakes it off, for it's no doubt his eagerness that earned him this small reminder for the day. A mark of strength; the ache of a job well done. But next morning it's something else; a stiff back, perhaps? Surely...sore from sleeping in another dragon's nest instead of his own? And so it goes. One day he can't move his jaw much, another his claws are cramped. By the fourth evening, his wings feel stiff and immobile. It starts to scare him, how his body loses control over itself so suddenly, but he still finds some comfort in presuming it's all due to sleeping badly or exerting himself. But then, the tip of his tail, that insignificant and small detail, stiffens up completely and now he cannot move it at all for three long days already and he sweats and cannot think clearly for it's just a simple, stupid mistake, he probably stepped on it or slept over it and cut off the blood flow and now it feels like it's numb 24/7 for [i]three days already[/i] but surely it'll pass it has to pass, although it's just a stupid tail tip but still, it's stupid for it to go numb for so long and he's going crazy thinking about it and it still itches but when he scratches it it feels weird, just like when you itch a numb limb and he bites into it to try and feel [i]something[/i] but there is nothing, [i]NOTHING[/i], [i]NO FEEELING AT ALL FOR THREE DAYS[/i] and he's scared and crazy and he bites and he bites and- ...but there is no blood. Only pain in his jaw and a broken tooth and he must not do it anymore for he'll break all of his teeth on that hardened, sparkling skin and he- He realizes- He- Bauxite finally understands- Oh, what a mistake it was. But as time passed, he slowly forgot why should he feel sad in the first place and what were once memories became empty images on a film reel. They lacked the weight of reality; they appeared to him unbidden, as he watched the story of his life through numb unblinking eyes, over and over. Without a proper feel for the passage of time, he'd spend his own eternity staring at the moving images, analyzing them to the slightest details. Their subject matter was no longer an "image of a relative" or "forest behind my den," but more akin to showing a picture of your friend to a complete stranger. He filtered out a dozen of those and forgot about the rest, losing them to oblivion, keeping only the ones that still offered him a twinge of [i]something[/i]. [center]---[/center] In less than a year, though, Serpentine's body restored itself. No thing is made to last an eternity, not even immaterial things like spells and curses, and much less potions or poisons. One's body is an ever-changing organism, even if the changing landscape is one that cannot be seen on the outside. But even as the last hardened piece of skin regained it's natural moisture and softened back up, Serpentine kept still. What was once regarded as a living statue was now once again a malnourished but living dragon. It took him weeks to realize he could move again, that he could finally leave that spot he'd spent a personal eternity in. That the sudden loudness around him and the warmth of sun on his skin were not mere hallucinations. Yet, his eyesight had deteriorated to the point of almost complete blindness. He could distnguish light from shadow, and general outlines of something or someone in front of him, but without any distinctive features. His wings were useless, dried out and wrinkled, without form or shape. His voice was hoarse and weak, and would remain so for some time before he would get used to using his throat once again. He could not run at all, and the way he walked was more akin to stagger than a proper trot. What was once a muscly creature looked like a bunch of sticks held together with some leather. His teeth grew weak and threatened daily to give up their hold in his gums. And his mind... It was a mere shell of a once-sharp wit and tongue. He did not know who he was anymore, and had no real memory, nor any goals. The few images he burned into it kept on repeating as they did back then, but held no meaning to him now. He could describe them to the utmost detail but it meant him nothing. What was once "Serpentine, The Living Dragon Statue" became "Serpentine, The Lost". Puffin my beloved, I would absolutely LOVE to give October a home if she hasn't been claimed yet! As soon as I saw your beautiful art I had a lore idea for her. I have a group of dragons who are part of a traveling circus, you see. And October is very obviously their juggler <3 [img]https://www1.flightrising.com/dgen/dressing-room/dragon?did=71670311&skin=0&apparel=27203,28807,25180,28810,28811,337,542,13789,10882,10369,10748&xt=dressing.png[/img] She's a little bit of an older tundra, well into her greying years - but she decided she was done living in her small village, and wanted to see the world. She offered to work for the Tricktroupe Circus as a juggler, using the same skills with which she once entertained her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She's having a blast living flamboyantly and experiencing all that life has to offer!
