NILAS

The floor of the auction house was as insufferably loud as always as Pearl and Aurora stepped inside, dragons clamoring over each other to sell their wares and services as loudly as they possibly could. Neither of the pair looked comfortable in this environment. Aurora clutched at her shopping list, glancing around.

A small sparkle of blue caught Pearl's eye, and she turned. Two young dragons sat by themselves, looking at them. Gesturing to Aurora, Pearl moved to greet them. "Are you two alone?" she asked, and the darker-blue one piped up. "Yeah. We're looking for new Clans."

Aurora and Pearl exchanged a glance. "Aren't you...rather young? Your brother-,"

"Sister," she corrected. "She's young, yeah, but she's really good at numbers." The sister in question grinned at them. "I've learned a lot from hanging out around here. A lot seems to get by dragons, huh? Do you need a new Clanmate?"

Aurora frowned apologetically. "We're...actually not so much a Clan, I'm afraid, more of a sanctuary..."

"A treasurer, then! I'd be good at that, huh? For example, I can tell you right now that you're spending like there's a hole in your pocket. Maybe you could use a financial advisor?"

Aurora looked indignant, flushing. "And how could you possibly tell that?! We just met you."

She giggled. "Well, I can't. But you do have a hole in your bag, so. Might want to patch that one up."

As Aurora hastened to catch the coins falling out of the threadbare pouch, Pearl looked on with amusement. "What's your name?"

"Nilas," she replied, her feathers bouncing cheerfully.

"I am Pearl, and this is Aurora," she said. "She is right, we do not have a Clan, so to speak." Nilas' face fell. "But - we do have a hoard to maintain, yes?"

She perked back up instantly. Pearl hummed with laughter. "So...perhaps you would like to join our little family?" Nilas squealed. She turned to Nilas' sister. "We'd be happy to offer you a place as well, if you'd like to accept."

Her sister shook her head. "Nah, that's okay. I can wait. Thanks, though." She grinned, giving Nilas a half-hug. "Miss ya. Write, okay?"

It was almost a full day before Nilas stopped talking a mile a minute from when they took off through their arrival back in the Steppes, but she was not wanting for enthusiasm in anything, as Pearl and Aurora quickly discovered. When she'd finally fallen asleep after a briefing on everything and many, many, many questions, Pearl and Aurora exchanged a tired, but pleased, look.

"She'll do great here."

Pearl looked mildly surprised. "I thought you might have some complaints."

Aurora shook her head vigorously, looking down at her small sleeping form. "Not at all...it's nice, actually. I was never that close to any of my siblings, so..."

"Ah." Pearl nodded in understanding, a rare smile gracing her face.
