Emperor

The news had spread like wildfire throughout Sornieth, straight into the ears of one dragon who should not have been listening to such dangerous whispering. Of course Nako was intrigued. How could he not be, when such a tantalizingly juicy piece of gossip dangled in front of him as he lazed around inside his bottle of spirits?

His head sloshing as much as the liquid in which he immersed himself, Nako decided that it sounded like an awful big adventure to go and see this Emperor for himself. Even better, the news on the wind was that entire clans were moving to live in the Emperor's wake, studying it, following it's very move. It sounded like an excellent idea. Though of course Nako didn't just want to see the Emperor. He wanted to ride it. He would make that monstrosity his new mount.

"Right. That's it!" He declared, stumbling into the cavern where his clan of miscreants were currently resting and immediately walking into a wall. He frowned at it, not realising in his drunken state that he had knocked into the chest of the towering guardian who watched over him much like a mother, nevermind that he was the one who had raised her.

"Go away." The icy pearlcatcher Xeadas muttered in his direction, and turned her back, angry that her sleep had been disturbed by such an irritating gnat.

Nako neither noticed nor cared that half of his clan scorned him, as long as they listened to him. "We're going to ride the Emperor!" He threw his wings out and stood proudly, projecting a dominant air.

There was a clattering of paints being kicked across the cavern as the timid Sahte dove through them in an attempt to hide from this terrifying news, and an exhasperated sigh from Pou, who had been in the middle of using those paints in her artwork.

"No, we're not." Luna said gently, nudging Nako with her nose and accidentally succeeding in knocking him over.

He picked himself up, dusted himself off as if nothing had happened, and squinted up at her. "We're not?"

"No." She said firmly.

Nako nodded. "Right. We're not!"

And that was the end of that.

Questions
part one

1. What Flight is your clan?
Water.

2. Why did they choose this Flight?
Generic answer: Because it suits the aesthetic of a pirate circus.
Hidden answer: A small, drunken fae is searching for a way that he can replace the Tidelord. ‘While the cat’s away, the mice will play’, and all that. Little dragon, big dreams.

3. Have they been loyal to other Flights before this? Or will they never move?
Wouldn’t really call it loyalty. The clan members have changed a lot over the years, but they started in Wind way back when, and then spent a long time in Ice, some time in Light and nature, a decent amount of time in earth, and now back to water for a long (permanent?) stay. They’ve moved around a lot as the nature and purpose of the clan and its members have changed.

4. What would be the deciding factor in a move, if the clan had to?
Honestly, they tend to move on the whims of the little fae. He has this ability to come up with the most bizarre reasons for them to relocate. See: the time he wanted to move to ride the emperor, safely vetoed.

5. Is the clan spiritual and highly loyal to their deity? Are they indifferent?
Definitely not a spiritual clan. For the most part they actively ignore the existence of the gods. The exception might have been the Icewarden, where the clan, at the time, reflected his values in being strict wardens. Things may change if/when the Tidelord finally returns, but they may not.

6. How does the clan view those from different Flights? Are they welcoming to all dragons, or suspcious of newcomers?
All flights are welcome in their clan, and to visit the circus. There is no bias here, unless it is towards those that bring eggs as offerings. Those ones definitely get preferential treatment. But no, flight doesn’t matter at all.

7. What does your lair look like? Go into detail.
The lair is currently still being set up at this point in time, so details are not yet solid. However;
The clan resides in a floating crate in the outskirts of Flotsam Town. There is a ‘secret’ - only secret when not largely decorated with circus colours when the circus is open – door in one side of the crate.

Entering that door leads you into a small hallway, the end of which appears to be a dead end with a windowed desk – something akin to a ticket booth, which is exactly its purpose when the circus is open. Grifas spends most of his time here, and has the control over the switch that swings the booth backwards which opens up the passage into the circus area itself.

Ahead is an open area where the circus ring and stands are to be set up, but if you follow the wall to the right along to the end you come to the staff door, which opens up into the lair where the clan spends most of their time. Nako’s bar is the first thing you see when you enter the door, and there is a trapdoor behind it that leads down into storage (which is also where Fukasa tends to lurk).

At the back is a platform near the roof for the ice twins to look down on everyone, with BaoBao and Sahte’s cozy area underneath. Puppet resides in the far right corner, Knaller’s cauldron in the middle of everything, and Pou’s art station along the wall at the front. Near puppet’s corner is also the nest/egg minding area where Ikhambi spends most of her time with the eggs and hatchlings.

The rest of the lair has yet to be decided in any detail.

8. Who founded the clan?
Nako; a drunken little fae who has a habit of picking up strays that have no where else to go.

9. Who is your clan leader? Why are they the leader? Have there been any leadership changes?
Nako is the leader, simply because the old clan fell apart due to some unforeseen disaster, and he was the only one left until he found new friends and started a whole new adventure. Many of the new clan do not strongly approve of him, but none of them are interested in being the leader, either. It’s an odd balance, but it works for them.

10. Was the leader chosen? Were they elected? An heir to the throne? Or maybe they achieved something within the clan?
Nako was not chosen as such, at least not in as many words. His casual ways just seemed to work for what everyone was looking for, and they have the power to vote and veto his more insane ideas, so there’s no pressure to overthrow him. He likes to think he is King, but mostly he just amuses them so they let him stay as their leader.

11. Who handles interclan relations? Any diplomats? Peacekeepers?
There are no members of the clan who are assigned specifically as diplomats or peacekeepers, but there are definitely those that are much more approachable than others, and some that should definitely not be allowed to interact with outsiders, though no one bothers to stop them.

Friendly: Lunastus, Drysor, Grifas, Pou,
Questionable: Nako, Ikhambi,
Adorable: BaoBao, Gurjak,
Gruff/Shy: Zjawa, Stein, Sahte, Skifter,
Avoid: Jokul, Xeadas, Knaller, Fukasa,

12. How does your clan view the Beastclans? Who handles Beastclan relations?
The beastclans are basically viewed/handled with a thought train of “If they leave us alone, we’ll leave them alone. If they pick a fight with us, we’ll destroy them.” Kind of mentality. All up they have very little actual interaction with them, save perhaps any encounters in the coliseum.

13. Does your clan have specific roles for each dragon?
Yes, though they are not set in stone and some change as their interests do.

14. Does your clan have any Flight ambassadors? What do they do?
No. The clan is completely uninterested in such things.

15. Does your clan have a council? An elected group of dragons in power?
No. It’s just Nako’s schemes and ideas that are then accepted or overruled by mutual consensus. There’s not really any need for an in between, as they are usually something good/entertaining/harmless, or something really really bad, Like trying to ride the emperor.

16. Are all dragons in the clan expected to contribute in some way? Or are they left to their own devices?
They are left to their own devices, though most do end up contributing. There are some that do not contribute much, if anything. Fukasa is a good example of this. He just lurks and keeps to himself, but they are still more than happy to shelter him, with the belief that if the clan comes under attack, he will help defend the others.

17. Who protects the clan? Who is in charge of battling/guarding?
Lunastus is the main battler/protector of the clan, but everyone is fully trained as the one condition of being part of Lacrimae rerum, and so they are all very capable of battling if the need should arise.

18. Does your clan trade with any other clans? Any allies? Enemies?
They are always willing to trade training services for eggs, and Pou will sometimes do art in exchange for eggs, gems or treasure. For the most part they must be approached by the other clan first in order to trade, unless Nako starts stressing that he needs more eggs, in which case he might actively go out and advertise the services available, or just see if there’s any unclaimed eggs lying around which he can bring home.

No one knows how, but he seems to find those unclaimed eggs at least once a week, and their nesting pile grows slowly bigger…

19. How is exalting handled in your clan? Any ceremonies? Is exalt fodder something that is part of your lore?
Fodder dragons are labelled as extras because they don’t have much purpose at all and just fill in the gaps – namely those in the treasure hoard. They’re generally seen as lesser dragons and don’t actually appear much in lore, if at all, and exalting isn’t actually mentioned. Instead, the lore tends to mention the clowns (dragons sent to the clan from other clans, in order to be trained), who ‘come, stumble around a bit and provide entertainment, and then get shooed away again’. Even then, the mentions of those are limited, and lore focuses mainly on the clan members themselves, though this may change in future.

20. Who does the gathering in the clan? (digging, scavenging, hunting, etc.)
This would probably be Nako, as he’s always out scavenging and scrounging around for eggs. If there was ever a need for any other sort of gathering, however, Nako definitely would not be the one getting his hands dirty. He would likely assign that task to one of the youngsters – probably BaoBao would enjoy it most.

Questions
part two

21. Does your clan have a healer?
No, though it’s possible that Ikhambi would try to tend to the wounded. Whether she would make things better or worse would remain to be seen.

22. Who looks after hatchlings? The parents, or a general hatchling-sitter?
This one is definitely Ikhambi, and with much enthusiasm. Ikhambi loves hatchlings… she just needs to learn to restrain her clumsiness as there have been many instances of near literal egg-sitting, much to Nako’s horror. There’s a good reason why not many hatchlings cross the threshold of the lair, and why those dragons who occupy it have chosen not to breed.

23. How does your clan educate younger dragons? Is there a scribe, scholar, or mentor?
E-d-u-c-a-t-i-o-n? Ha. The clan as a whole isn’t really interested in such archaic practices such as education. They know what they need to know, and someone tells them if they don’t. All the rest of the fancy sounds and flowing pronunciations don’t matter at all. If they can’t kill it, eat it, use it to nest, trade it for money, or hoard it, there’s not really much point in knowing about it.

One exception to this might be Grifas, who simply likes to be organised and therefore needs to know quite a bit more about things if he wants to be able to manage the circus, and keep their guests relatively safe when they visit.

24. Do you have any artists within your clan? How do they make a living from their crafts?
Gurjak, Knaller and Pou can all be considered artists of a sort. Gurjak creates puppet likenesses of visitors and gifts them to people. Knaller experiments with her cauldron to create body art - though this is entirely at the consumer’s own risk and should be considered services given with a waiver for any injury or potential fatality. The words ‘lab rat’ seem to be whispered around when Knaller’s experiments are ever mentioned.

Pou is the actual artist, using her paint skills to sell portraits of dragons and their familiars when the circus is in play.

25. Does your clan have a cook? Who handles the food?
There is no cook. It is strictly a ‘fend for yourself’ sort of clan. Even the hatchlings are taught to fetch their own food, or manipulate one of the others into doing it for them. Drysor will often help feed the little ones, only because she finds it hard to say no when they look at her with such big eyes. Sometimes she’ll even feed Sahte when he’s too scared to go outside.

26. Who is on the Coli team? Who trains future warriors?
Lunastus is the coli team, dominating the Mire, though Zjawa is looking to take her place when she needs a rest. On the days where it’s about farming areas rather than training, a most peculiar trio take to the coliseum. The ice twins team up with the unpredictable Knaller, and while it is an odd trio, their results are unmatched.

27. Any messengers? Scouts? Delivery dragons?
None. They’re barely interested in the dragons that visit them. They have no time to be going here and there to deliver words to other clans.

28. How does apparel work in your clan? Are any pieces of apparel status symbols, or indicators of the role the dragon has?
There is very little apparel worn at all in the clan. Those pieces that are worn, were generally just picked up off the ground because that particular dragon liked the look of it. There’s no fancy dragons here who care about fashion. They’re way too barbaric for that lifestyle. Blood and gore and all that.

29. How are familiars viewed in the clan? Pets? Companions? Friends?
Again, depends on the dragon. Nako’s Mutt is a permanent fixture by his side and acts like a well-trained dog - not that anyone knows how he managed to train it, as incompetent as he is. BaoBao’s Miao is more of a companion that goes on adventures and gets up to mischief with her. Gurjak’s Doll is never seen to even move, and most assume it really is a stuffed toy.

Most are still looking for - or not caring about - their familiars, with Sahte in particular looking for one that will protect him and help him become braver.

30. Do you have any familiars that are intelligent enough to directly interact with the dragons?
Not at this stage, but perhaps when Sahte finds his companion?

31. Who cares for the familiars? The familiar's dragon, or a general caretaker?
The familiar’s dragon. There would be no helping them if Ikhambi was put in charge of their care as well.

32. Are extra familiars/non-bonded familiars free to wander around the lair? Or do they not exist in the lore?
They do not exist in the lore. It would be assumed that a few might wander in and be viewed as rats to be killed or chased off. Lacrimae rerum really aren’t a very friendly bunch.

33. Does your clan have any Beastclan members living among the ranks?
If they are, the clan is not aware of it and nor do they care. Politics and wars and all those big thoughts go back to the need for an education, which they do not have.

34. Who hoards what? Do the dragons each have a personal hoard, or is there one big storage area?
Nako hoards eggs. That’s all there is and all anyone ever needs to know. Don’t ask any more questions on the subject, and Do. Not. Touch. The. Eggs.

35. Does your clan specialize in anything?
Death and destruction? Being lazy? Killing anything that comes close? Not giving any care to anyone else but themselves, not even their own clan mates? Serious answer, no. Not particularly. They tend to just exist and go about their days however they feel like it.

36. Does your clan stand for anything? (truth, might, knowledge, etc.)
Well, the name of the clan literally means ‘Tears of things’, so perhaps they stand for misery to their enemies? (and friends, and anyone who is misfortunate enough to encounter them at all).

37. What is the origin of your clan's name?
Nako thought it sounded cool. But the ‘Lacrimae’ part was handed down from the original clan of travelling circus pirates - Cirque de Lacrimae. Keeping tradition, Nako didn’t want to take away the tears, but he wanted to add something of his own to show that things have changed and they weren’t the same anymore. So he slapped on ‘rerum’, because it went well with the tears and included the name of his favourite beverage. He has a pretty one-track mind.

38. Does your clan have a set of rules or guidelines for the members? What happens if a dragon breaks these rules?
Rules? -insert endless maniacal laughter here-
Rules are for wusses. Enter here, and all you find is chaos.

Though maybe one rule. Don’t touch Nako’s eggs.

39. How does your clan view Gen One dragons?
Superior. Everything else is just fodder.

40. Does your clan have a territory? Or just the lair?
Their territory is wherever they want it to be on any given day. Woe betide anyone who dares to cross them, because here there be pirates.

Questions
part three

41. Do any dragons in the lair have a bias or dislike towards certain breeds or a Flight?
No. They don’t really care who comes from what flight. It’s all the same in the end.

42. Which dragons are good friends within your clan? Any enemies? Best couple?
Luna and Nako are good friends, as Nako raised Luna but she now mostly babysits him. BaoBao gets along well with Sahte, because she’s basically adorable and even the scaredy cat Sahte can’t resist her. Stein and Drysor are well matched - mostly she pesters and teases him and he looks at her fondly. Jokul and Xedas, the Ice twins, are inseparable. It’s them against the world. Literally. They hate everyone else.

43. Who's the cinnamon roll, and who's the problematic fave?
Cinnamon Roll is a hard choice between Sahte and BaoBao. They’re both soft babies.
Problematic fave… Nako. No further explanation needed to anyone who has ever met him.

44. Do you have any dragons that aren't part of the lore? Just for show?
There are rumours of a burrow buried deep in the cellar where a fluffy SuiBian lurks hidden, watching over those who slumber...

45. Are there any dragons in your clan who dislike hatchlings?
The ice twins, definitely. Knaller likes them… but we think maybe she’d like to stick them in her cauldron for experiments, so she’s not allowed near them.

46. How do permababies work in your lore? Do you have any?
BaoBao and Gurjack are both permababies. Gurjack is a living puppet and was not created to grow up so it makes sense that she doesn’t. No one really knows why BaoBao doesn’t age, but with her adorableness, no one cares.

47. Who manages the treasure and gem hoards?
Nako. Shockingly, it’s one of the few things he can be trusted with, because he values them almost as much as his eggs, and doesn’t like spending. Of course, Grifas doesn’t trust him entirely, and keeps a watchful eye from afar, true to his vulture nature.

48. Has your clan gone through any unfortunate events? Tragedies, even?
The current clan has not as yet, but poor Nako has been through some trying times, having lived through the destruction and disbandment of two clans. He’s a little distraught from what he has witnessed, and developed a few quirks as a result. It is why Lacimae rerum cuts him a lot of slack with his odd behaviour and indulges him as much as possible when it is safe to do so.

49. Are roles assigned to dragons when they are born/come into the clan, or do they choose their role?
A role is generally assigned, just to give them a purpose without having them flounder, but they are more than welcome to change their role at any time if they believe there is something else they would rather do - or nothing at all. There are no absolutes in this clan, only freedom.

50. Who kills the spiders?
The Ice twins would kill their own “spiders”, but not help anyone else. Knaller would just eat them or dump them in the cauldron… for everyone else, if they have any issues with big scaries, Stein is probably the one to go to.

51. Who eats all the food?
If you take it to mean the least picky eater, that would be Luna for sure. If you mean quantities, the big bumbling Ikhambi. Though honestly Luna needs a lot of sustenance being the main fighter and provider for the lair, so to be fair maybe she really does eat the most.

52. Do you have any tricksters or prank loving dragons? Do they cause mischief?
Knaller, definitely. But no one is sure if she’s meaning to be a trickster or if she’s really just that insane. Zjawa is becoming a little bit of a prankster the more familiar he gets with the clan. He’s the resident spook after all, scaring others is the main part of his identity.

53, Most intimidating dragon?
At first glance, Stein, though any who know him would begin to wonder why, as he’s just a gruff, warm-hearted type. Otherwise it’s definitely Xeadas. Jokul can be intimidating, but he mostly jkust lurks silently behind Xeadas like an icy wind. Xeadas is the one who will get in your face with poisoned words and snarls, and she has the claws to back them up if you push her too far.

54. Most friendly dragon?
Ikhambi, though when paired with her clumsy tendencies, she’s not so great at making friends, so the greeting and making alliances is usually left to Pou - or BaoBao if they want a different tactic.

55. Dragon most likely to bring back a stick from gathering?
Knaller. She’s just left to do whatever she wants because no one understands what she’s actually trying to do, assuming she has a purpose for anything. She doesn’t really say anything coherent anyway.

56. Laziest dragon?
Nako. All he does is drink his spirits and laze around, draping himself over other members of the clan and making them carry him around. He only shows any sign of life if eggs or a new scheme are involved.

57. Funniest dragon?
Maybe Zjawa for the pranks he plays? It would be funny to anyone who’s not a victim of his pranks at any given time. Lacrimae rerum isn’t a clan that’s really aimed at being comical, so the members don’t have a large capacity for humour.

58. Do you have any sub-clans? What are they called?
None. It is a small clan, and though relationships are strained at the best of times, they all have strong loyalty to each other. “Only I can bully x” kind of mentality.

59. Does your clan decorate the lair at all? How so?
They all have their own way of decorating their little areas. The ice twins use ice, to no one’s surprise - their very breath and magic freezing the area where they’ve chosen to roost. Knaller uses whatever she wants, Pou paints pictures and hangs them around the place, Nako decorates with empty bottles and glass, BaoBao and Sahte collect anything soft they can find, and Gurajk has a corner full of wooden things and broken gadgets that make her feel at home in a little workshop.

60. What markers does your clan use to let others know they live in the area? Flags? Banners? Runes?
Lacrimae rerum are a contradiction. They like to keep a low profile, leaving as few markers and outward decorations as possible, so no one knows where to find them except for word of mouth whispered in dark alleyways.

Then on days when the circus is open to the public, they’ll hang out all the noise-makers and banners in bright colours to lead the way and announce the circus to the world. When it’s over, they’ll return to the shadows until it’s time for the next opening.

Questions
part four

61. Smartest dragon?
Grifas is likely the smartest, since he’s the one in charge of organisation. It might be a bit awkward if he wasn’t. Then again, perhaps one of the others is hiding their intelligence? All up, it’s not likely that any of them are particularly smart, since they’re stupid enough to form a clan together even though many of them have such -- conflicting -- personalities, to put it nicely.

62. The dragon everybody loves?
BaoBao. You can’t not love someone that adorably fluffy and enthusiastic. Even the ice twins have a hard time glaring at her for more than a few seconds.

63. The dragon everybody hates?
Knaller’s endless obscene and messy experiments that often result in the permanent loss of something treasured by one of the other clan members certainly don’t make her very popular. Luckily for her, her skills in the coliseum make her too valuable to kick out of the clan. Besides, no one’s perfect, and no one ever said you had to particularly like your family.

64. Do you have a clan rune?
No, though if you asked Nako to design one, it would probably just be a picture of his face. Or a bottle of spirits… or an egg. You know what? We’ll just keep Nako away from the design tools.

65. Pick a song that best describes your clan.
Imagine Dragons - Believer

66. Who gets into arguments the most? Who keeps the peace?
Jokul and Xeadas are the ones who pick the most arguments. Or rather, Xeadas does and Jokul just follows her around being his silently intimidating partner to her vocal toxin. Pou is actually pretty good at keeping the peace, if you can draw her away from her arts long enough. Otherwise, they just send in one of the hatchlings.

67. How do skins and accents work in your lore?
Mostly they are seen either as items that can be gifted and fastened onto a dragon - such as Luna’s tree that Nako gifted her, which has since grafted itself onto her body and wings - or as body painting that might be done by Pou or an artist of another clan, depending. Pou prefers portraits to body paint, however. It’s only for festivals that she might find herself in the mood.

68. Best dressed?
Nooth, hands down. No questions asked. The biggest flirt in the clan and the one who cares the most about his appearance… Though most of the others don’t even care a little bit, if we’re being honest.

69. Does your clan have any elders?
Not at this stage. A clan of angry and chaotic circus pirates isn’t really a place where old-timers might wish to retire. If they ever grew up and settled down, perhaps.

70. Does each dragon in your lair have their own space, or is the entire lair shared?
They tend to have their own corner of a shared space, but it’s pretty communal. The exception might be Fukasa, as he tends to lurk down in the cellars below the circus - disturbed only by Nako when the small fae is on a mission to retrieve some of his spirits (or hide it away).

71. How do you handle gene scrolls in your lore?
Knallers creations. Somehow, somewhere in all that mess and chaos, something good has to come from it, right?

72. Who loves festivals the most? Who parties the hardest?
Aside from the hatchlings for obvious reasons, Nooth and Zjawa absolutely adore festivals, for different reasons. Nooth loves partying; the chance to show off and tease and laze about in all his glory, flirting with everyone and bringing cheer and spreading stories. Being able to collect limited edition items to bring back to the clan as souvenirs is icing on the cake to him.

Zjawa likes the darker types of celebrations - anything where he can play his tricks in merriment, scaring others and haunting with good nature, though he’s not above dressing up as a colourful spirit and handing out goodies at a harvest festival every now and then!

73. Pick two dragons and talk about their relationship.

Stein and Fukasa

These two have an odd sort of relationship. Strangely enough, Stein is probably the one who would get along the most with Fukasa, were they ever to formally interact. Mostly the two go about their own business, all but forgetting the other exists, but occasionally they cross paths with one another, and that’s when the magic would happen.

You couldn’t exactly call it a conversation, as few, if any words would be spoken, but their eyes would meet, and Stein would clear his throat and nod to the Wildclaw in a gruff manner. To which Fukasa would then reply with the tiniest of a nod, and a slow aversion of the eyes - a sign of deference to the warrior. Utter magic, and a solid respect for one another that defies words.

74. Choose one dragon and talk about them.

Sahte

The biggest, softest baby in the clan, aside from the literal BaoBao. Sahte is scared of just about everything, including the other resident hatchling, Gurjak. She tinkers over in that puppet corner of hers non-stop and Sahte doesn’t know what she does, but he’s sure she’s doing terrifying things.

There was that one time that she made him a plushie for him to sleep with so that he wouldn’t have so many nightmares, and that was sweet of her - but who knew if she was conspiring with any of the others?! The world was a scary place, and Sahte was alone in the middle of it all, surrounded by strangers.

Only the sweetest BaoBao was able to calm him with that adorable nature of hers. Some of the others looked out for him, too, and he did often enjoy himself when he performed acrobatics for the circus, as contradictory as that seemed. Flying through the air and performing tricks with such abandon made him feel as if he had at least some control in his otherwise terrifying existence.

75. Choose a dragon with a familiar and talk about their relationship.

Gurjak & Doll

Her familiar is rather unlike any other in the clan, in the way that she created the doll herself. It was made as one would any plushie, with material stitched together and stuffed with soft things, its dead button eyes staring in the odd way that lifeless things had.

But then she’d had this wonderful idea, and since she had somehow been brought to life to become a living puppet, perhaps this feat could be accomplished again? And so she had bravely approached Knaller as the Veilspun stirred her cauldron and cackled at a voice only she could hear, and soon later - much more so than one might have expected - Gurjak had a living doll familiar that would follow her around and keep her company.

Doll could not talk, but it could perform simple errands for her, such as fetching tools while she worked on her creations. It was almost like having an assistant in her little workshop, and she was glad for its silent company beside her, even if she was bemused by its odd habit of bringing her dead leaves when she didn’t ask for them.

Her body twitched with anticipation and she tensed, shifting her shoulders even as her tongue darted across her teeth. Catching herself, she huffed and straightened once more, turning her head away. “What of it?” “Admit it, you want to go. Of course you do. You love challenges, and this is the biggest one yet. Don’t you want to know if you’ve got what it takes to be the champion?” Luna’s willpower held out all of 3 seconds more. “Okay yes, I want to go. Can I go? Oh please, Nako. Can we go and see what it’s all about?” Her toes curled, claws digging into the wooden floor below as she imagined it. The blood, the sweat, the glory. Oh, it would be so much fun! “As if you have to ask. I’ve already made the arrangements.” Nako grinned in that scheming way of his, and waved his hand at her commandingly - a gesture much used for when he intended to ride his mount. Luna lowered her head obediently as Nako scrambled up her neck to sit on her back. “Away!” he cried, thrusting his neck forward eagerly. Luna chuckled, slowly stood and walked calmly forward, much to Nako’s disgust. She ignored his calls for her to go faster, finding her own satisfaction in refusing him. Oh yes, this was going to be a fun couple of weeks. --- The golden decorations on Luna’s assigned tent flapped proudly as she and Nako arrived. She peeked inside, looking at the simple and yet practical lodgings, and then withdrew her head once more to look at Nako. “Will you be participating too?” she asked, though she doubted it, seeing as that would require him to expend energy that could otherwise be spent drinking, but she also knew that Nako was once a strong fighter, even if everyone else seemed to forget that fact amongst his odd behaviour and chaotic shenanigans. However, as expected, Nako shook his head, and slid down from her back. “Gurjak wants to set up a tinker shop in the plaza. I’ll be there with a few of the others. We’ll be watching you, though.” He patted her nose fondly and toddled off, producing a bottle of spirits from who-knows where as he stumbled through the crowd, humming to himself. Luna watched him go with a smile, and then entered her lodgings. It was time to prepare herself. --- Over 200 battles later Luna stood, head lowered and sides heaving, thoroughly defeated. She had thought she was strong, but seeing the other contestants here had shown her a new side to strength that she had never seen before. The warriors of Sornieth were nothing like the scavengers she came across in her training. They were fierce and determined, and many had seen more battles than she could ever imagine. She had lost, but she was not at all disheartened. If anything, she was all the more eager to throw herself back into training and try some of the fighting styles she had witnessed in these two weeks. She would train and get stronger, and next year she would enter the event again, and show them all how much she’d improved. Raising her head in determination, she nodded respectfully to the opponent who had finally defeated her and made to leave the ring, only to find Nako in her path, leaning casually on a box and hiccuping as he watched her. It wasn’t just him, either. Gurjak, Stein, Drysor and Grifas stood with him, all looking at her with immense pride in their eyes. Stein approached first, the flames in his eyes a low smoulder as he handed her a cloth to wipe her sweat. “Another brilliant battle, worthy of the strongest warrior of Lacrimae rerum.” His voice was quiet but clear, and Luna felt love for her clan swell in her chest. She buried her face in Stein’s neck in gratitude, and he nuzzled her neck briefly before pulling away. “Let’s go home.” Nako said, and Luna nodded. Luna stared at the pamphlet that Nako held in front of her with a knowing look in his eyes. Her body twitched with anticipation and she tensed, shifting her shoulders even as her tongue darted across her teeth. Catching herself, she huffed and straightened once more, turning her head away. “What of it?”

“Admit it, you want to go. Of course you do. You love challenges, and this is the biggest one yet. Don’t you want to know if you’ve got what it takes to be the champion?”

Luna’s willpower held out all of 3 seconds more.
