I watched about 10 short episodes and couldn't get into it, especially with how it kept interrupting what little plot there was with random shenanigans. Looking at the fandom, I dodged a bullet.

Omg I completely get it. Honestly, I think hetalia fans are more into the concept than anything else. The fics, art and discourse create the content we really enjoy, not so much the show.
Ive been following this season just to keep connected and in on the conversation, but truthfully I haven't even seen the 3 or so seasons before it. I just created my own little space to enjoy it with friends. I think a lot of fans are similar. Though the show revival has been nice in terms of merch being available again!
Tldr; The anime is okay. I totally get why it'd be hard to get into. And the fandom used to be a nightmare, but is now somewhat respectable, albeit small.

I’m kinda proud to admit that I wasn’t into Hetalia at the time it was most popular, which is when I was in middle school.
I was however a filthy Homestuck fan so I’m not sure which is the better of two evils here.

Hahaha it's hilarious how people really did seem to be one or the other. I kinda wish I got into homestuck (the art was interesting and cute) but that ship has sailed long ago without me.

I love Hetalia. It’s always been one of my favorite anime. My mom likes it a lot too. She has a crush on France.
I’ve never actually participated in the fandom itself though, and so I’m blissfully ignorant towards all the toxic drama that went down.
I’m also a Homestuck too, so yeah, I’m no stranger to fandoms with crazy reputations.

Awwww it's cute you're into it with your mom! My mom (affectionately) thinks I'm a weirdo for liking my little country anime.
I wouldn't say there was drama, just... idk the fandom had a lot of issues with historical insensitivity and racism. There were no boundaries between what was a cute, fun depiction and being outright offensive. Didn't help we were all, like, barely teenagers if that. :P

I tried rewatching it, and I gotta tell you, I think 90% of the reason I liked it as a teenager was The Mental Illness (TM), because I literally found nothing redeeming.

tundra monolair (except when i'm not)
I still love Hetalia! It was one of the very first anime I watched and it pretty quickly became one of my hyperfixations (it ended up topping my 4+ year OBSESSION with Harry Potter lol). Even after I stopped being as active in the fandom I still went back and watched clips/episodes quite a bit.

I am busy making what will hopefully be the largest collection of Hetalia fandragons on this website.
Extra note, I got into Hetalia the last month of 2019, and I still haven't seen any of the seasons outside of season 7.

I just ignored the fandom for the most part tbh and just enjoy the show and the scanlations

/quietly hides three of my fandragons
I don't know what you're all talking about...
This is why whenever I write stuff I always set it in humanverse AU, because the nationverse is...
Problematic.
