I thought it said somewhere that PCs add to their pearls over time? I always assumed it started smaller, like a baseball and they just added to it, making them bigger.

It does specifically say ‘a large, lustrous pearl’ so... I guess it depends on the metric we’re using. Most pearls we’re used to are relatively small... so a ‘large pearl’ to US would be like anything from a d20 to mandarin orange size right? Or bigger??

... a very quick dragon search says that pearlie hatchlings average around 2 m long, which is... a big baby. That pearl’s massive regardless. Though I like to imagine that baby pearls are very messy, constantly secreting mucus to add to the pearl and that it does likely start out smaller- though still larger than pearls from other sources.

i assume the hatchling art is meant to be a general "this is an Child" rather than specifically a newly hatched baby, so the pearlcatcher represented in it is probably meant to be more like a draconic 5-10 year old than a newborn. their pearls probably start off much smaller and just *eventually* get to that size in proportion to their bodies at some point in the average pearlcatcher child's life.
