I hear Squidge.org is pretty good though i havent tried it myself
I hear Squidge.org is pretty good though i havent tried it myself
returning to this thread now that i had a chance to actually look at alternatives... just want to summarize my thought process in case it's helpful to anyone else :)
1. i considered signing up for imgur, but it requires a phone number which i don't really want to give them. this combined with the sudden deletion announcement made me move on to just finding a different site. who's to say in a year or two they won't announce inactive accounts will have their images deleted...?
2. i looked at some sites mentioned in this thread and other places online as alternatives: postimages, imgbox, and **********
3. i'm going to go with **********, because the non-randomized url was actually something i was looking for a few months ago. the fact they have been around so long also seems great to me. i would have liked folders but i'll deal with it for the non-randomized url.
why is this important? you could delete your image from **********, reupload an image with the same name, and then not have to update image urls that have already been placed in forums, bios, etc. my use for this is if i ever want to change my hatchery banner, i would no longer have access to the banner that's in the bios of dragons i already sold.
edit: well FR is censoring the name of the site (not sure why?) so now i'm not sure if it will work... if they censor image urls from there too. this is really disappointing but i guess i'll go with postimages rofl

- imgbox - 7 years old, no registration required*, has folders, randomized url
- postimages - 19 years old, no registration required*, has folders, semi-randomized url (keeps your image name but path also includes a randomized part)
- ********** - 17 years old, registration required, no folders, choice of randomized or non-randomized url

I was comparing people's suggestions and I just wanted to alert you to something in Postimage's terms of service, in case you hadn't read it!
[quote]you grant PostImage a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable worldwide license (with sublicense and assignment rights) to use, to display online and in any present or future media, to create derivative works of, to allow downloads of, and/or distribute any such file or content, including embedded (hotlinked) into third-party websites[/quote]
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's worth noting for anyone considering using the site!
[/quote]
that's what every tos for websites that host content says. it's generic, and it's copypasted. if you upload stuff to the site, they need to be able to keep it and show it to others. otherwise, the site cannot work.
imgbox's tos currently says:
[quote] You're also agreeing that imgbox.com has permission to store, index, manipulate materials uploaded to the Service.[/quote]
which uses simpler language to say the same thing.
permission to...
[columns] store, [nextcol] [nextcol]to use,
to display online and in any present or future media,[/columns]
[columns] index, [nextcol] [nextcol]to allow downloads of,
and/or distribute any such file or content
including embedded (hotlinked) into third-party websites[/columns]
[columns] manipulate [nextcol] [nextcol]to create derivative works of,[/columns]
american copyright law (which is what most of these sites are concerned about, as their servers are physically somewhere in north america) was written long before the internet existed, and therefore before image hosts existed. copyright law was written for big corporations, not people.
it really hasn't caught up to reality at all, so image hosts need this long spiel about how you're going to let them keep the image you upload, and how they will then proceed to let other people look at the image, and those people are going to be able to save it and keep a copy of it potentially forever, you don't know, no-one can control that.
it's just so, on a simple legal basis, if someone tries to sue them for doing the basic functionality of being an image host, they can point to the tos and say "but you gave us permission" and get the suit dismissed.
it's a lot easier to have this to point to than to have to deal with copyright law if someone does decide to try it on.

@Antimoany Thank you! :D I didn't know those parts implied a bunch of other things. The bit about "create derivative works of" is what gave me pause, I'm not sure why an image host would need that permission. Maybe just for cropping thumbnails.

I personally use Imgur, but have my account set to Private so others won't see my posts. :3 I also don't engage with the community; I don't understand meme culture anyway. :P
I am also just anti social media so avoid sites like Discord and DA like the plague, plus I heard that DA has been going...Very downhill with AI and NFT stuff so I wouldn't suggest using that. I quit years ago due to how mobile UNfriendly it is, plus the more NSFW stuff that's been posted. Glad I forgot my login! :P
Tbh, I've had issues with images from Discord and such; They randomly vanish and if you don't know the functions of those sites, then you're kinda outta luck unless the artist happens to still have their pic saved. Imbb does this same thing, and while I've heard you can turn off that auto delete feature, I just don't trust it but I'm just used to Imgur so don't bother with anything else. xD
I do NOT use Discord, for the record, so it's definitely not me deleting stuff.
EDIT: Never mind the above; I honestly didn't look at when this was made so you decided before I posted, haha.
Oh that's odd...When'd Imgur require a phone number? I joined years ago though so maybe that's why I've not been asked. Unless you tried via app, something I wouldn't really recommend using as it is. I never even bothered trying the app since my iPad would be my main "art storage" if I had one aside from my comp, and it's too old; The reviews for the app hold me back from trying via phone. xD

Personally I created a couple of images and used Tumblr to host them, and it seems to be working pretty well? I'm not really knowledgeable about copyright etc though or about polices, but overall I haven't really seen anyone complain about Tumblr in that regard, so it doesn't seem like too bad an alternative. Images don't always display well (I know very small images appear really blurry because of the way pixel art is displayed), however the images are, in fact, intact. And you can make one post with many images, so as long as the post isn't deleted they should stay up? (I've also seen posts from accounts that were deleted, I think (the accounts were deleted I mean, not the posts) so posts seem to stick around quite a bit
Just giving my input, but I don't know what it's worth, so it's worth looking into yourself
