All in the title. I'd got a pair in my hatchery that's XXY (Obsidian/Obsidian/Whatever), but their range certainly isn't as big as it could be. What's the widest possible range?

It depends on what your Whatever is. The color range is based on the shortest arc of a circle so what you need are colors on opposite sides:

Counting out colors can be hard so another way to do it is this site:

Input your Whatever and choose colors from the opposite end to figure out where the color wheel flips and choose one of those colors. For example, if your Whatever is Pearl you'll need something around Pear/Leaf/Radioactive to get the widest range.
