Are there any other people who used to be Wings of Fire fans but aren’t anymore? Please refrain from bringing up drama or downright insulting the fandom; I just want to find other people to reminisce with.
I used to be head-over-heels in love with Wings of Fire, and I made so many OCs for it. I adored the Wings of Fire Fanon Wiki, it was my first real internet community that I joined and it was very friendly and had a real sense of community. I loved being on it, and I really miss it, but the UCP update to Wikia (which ruined the format of it) killed off a lot of the community (especially users who had been on it for a long time) and it’s become…well, not what it used to be.
I loved the book series itself too, but it has gone downhill (in my opinion) and the fandom ruined my view of the series in general by pointing out all of its writing mistakes.
Now, when I see WoF brought up elsewhere, I feel a sense of…nostalgia and bitterness. It’s something that I adored, but that I have now moved on from and that I don’t want to engage in anymore.
Is anyone else a former WoF fan who looks back upon it both fondly and sadly? I’d especially love to meet people who used to be WoF Fanon Wiki members (or who still are).

Me! Mee! I was in it when the last of series 2 was being published. I jumped ship after the 2nd book of series 3. It felt way different than the other arcs and I wasn't a fan. The Fandom also wasn't too nice to me. I was on the WoF amino and it was a very toxic place and the devs were all awful. But me and all my friends would share our WoF ocs and it is still a LITTLE fun to look back on, and I got a lot of cute ocs now, and it also introduced me to this site, so eh

I've been reading since the first books release, sometime in late elementary so.. I've been around awhile for the books, and some of the earlier stages of the fandom (I think) although I haven't actually done or followed anything WoF related for a few years now. Last thing I touched was WOF Amino and I think that explains everything HAHA.
I stuck around for the end of the 3rd arc out of pure nostalgia/"well I've come this far might as well finish it" but I doubt I'll be reading the others, if more come out. I can enjoy kids books now and then, but I just.. don't really like the writing and handling of the story anymore.

Yep! I bought all the books in second arc and beyond (not the 15th) hardcover when they came out! I followed and roleplayed the series for a LONG time.
The last few books were just not as good :( I had a lot of fun with it, but the communities for it kind of died out and the book quality declined...
Shame. I loved those cool dragons. I still do run an ARPG for it but that's pretty much my whole involvement right now.

I noticed a huge decline in writing and characters (seriously, what the HELL happened to Anemone?) as the series went on but I keep buying and reading the books as to not let my bookshelf grow out of date (also... uh... the cover art is really cute >:().
The whole main antagonist of the 3rd arc is hilarious, though. They had a perfectly good and valid villain and they just decided 'y'know what? let's scrap her and make THIS the big bad. YEAH! WRITING!'
Edit; the whole 'humans being able to communicate with dragons and becoming protagonists' was what made me 'drop' the series emotionally. I liked it when they were considered unintelligent (sort of a 'what if x evolved sentience but humans did not?) so we could focus on the real stars of the book; the dragons.

Ohhh yeah! I started reading at the end of 2015, and was waiting for escaping peril and beyond. I remember getting legends of Darkstalker on the day of its release and being 10 year old me, staying up all night to read it. It was quite beautiful, and I still have the book (albeit, It is uhh…. Torn…)
I noticed myself getting distanced in about the start of 2020 when dragonslayer, a book rumoured in 2016 (yes, 2016) had finally dropped and it was terrible. Beyond terrible. Then (as i like to call it) the artist purge happened, and all the big wof artists left for a myriad of reasons which left like 3 big artists all with the same generic dragon style and now everyone’s art looks the same in it. I tried to read the dangerous gift and found it mediocre, and didn’t even make it through the 15th book which was released this year despite getting it three weeks early since it was just lying on the bookshelves for half price since no one was buying it.
I am currently in the process of selling my entire collection apart from Darkstalker, and have quit the fandom entirely. I think one of the reasons is that unlike the fans, the books have not grown. I will use stranger things as an example, as while you wait for the new series and grow, so do the characters, their personalities, and actions in the new series and it’s very refreshing. Wings of fire feels like a copy-paste of the exact same character. Feel free to @ me, I’d love to hear from some more people who are in a similar boat.
(Edit: i was super into the fandom too, the wof wiki, and this one fanfiction called eranomous’s story which was super popular)

Oof, yeah, I haven't even bought the 15th book. I used to love the series, I've been reading it since I was 13, I remember the excitement of waiting for Talons of Power to release after catching up with the series. I made OCs, started drawing, really fell in love with the setting. To this day one of my favourite OCs is a Silkwing I made in 2018 after the release of The Lost Continent
But I got older, my tastes started to mature, and it's become clear to me that by 2020 the only reason I was still reading it was for nostalgia, and because I wanted to see it through to the end. The writing is mid at best, and it feels like every character is cut from the same 5 cookies cutter shapes. Confidant and Aggressive, Smart, Small and Helpless, Hopeful, and Serious to a Fault. The same five protagonists given a different name and face every ark
It used to be unique, the only dragon series I've seen that wasn't centered around humans. But then, of course, Dragonslayer and book 14 happened, and now it's just kind of like any other mid-tier dragon book
Not to mention the fandom also had a part in my loss of interest. Most of it was a great and accepting community, and I made some of my best online friends by partaking in fandom activities, but even then it felt like new callout posts were being made every week and it just started to get exhausting. I'd check my deviantart notifications and by the time I was done clearing them I'd be too burnt out from all the drama to even consider interacting with the fandom in any other way
I'll probably read book 15 at some point, just to see what it's all about, but I don't think I'll be reading any new WoF content should Tui. T. Sutherland choose to continue the series

I still enjoy the series for nostalgic purposes but only because I have stayed away from the fandom. it's crazy toxic for a book meant for 11 year olds. Why do all the weirdos have to latch on and ruin it for everyone? Anyways, I feel the later books are less captivating and went too magic-y, but sometimes I need a quick and fun evening read when my brain is already melted.

Yes! I used to be on the fanon wiki (not that active) and read the books. I’m definitely not involved with the fandom anymore (though I wasn’t much to begin with) but I still have some interest in the books, just I’m not as into them.
As with other users in this thread, I do agree the writing went downhill. The first series was definitely the best (that plot twist that there was no prophecy? Great.) with the second series being worse but having some interesting ideas (though why the love triangle??? Qibli and Winter seemed so much more into eachother than Moon lol) but it’s main appeal was definitely the idea of a dragon school, and also Darkstalker as the villain. The third series started out very great, I loved books 1-3, the worldbuilding was very good and it felt like a fresh start. I haven’t read book 5 but book 4 was much weaker.
The whole thing about the focus on humans making the books less interesting makes perfect sense. I wasn’t able to put my finger on why something felt wrong before, but yeah I’m here for dragons, not humans. Humans can be a funny curiosity in the background but I’d rather the focus stay on dragons. It’s why I love Flight Rising actually, because dragons get to be the protagonists for once.
Anyways, I do enjoy the books a lot (and they certainly aren’t as bad as other childhood/preteen books) but they have been falling off a bit. I still love the worldbuilding though and have some cool WoF characters I should really get drawing again~

Yep! I enjoyed the WoF series and still do to this day.
The first arc is probably my favourite of the series because of nostalgia and also the dragons' behaviours (they seemed more
dragon and less... "humans with dragon bodies," but I digress).
Sometimes, I still make OCs bc I think the dragons look really interesting!
Wings of Fire actually got me back into reading after the school system and curriculum completely ruined my love of reading. It's a slow process, but my relationship with books has been gradually improving for the past few years.
As for the Fandom, I'm more than disappointed with where it's gone and the quality of info it shows (lots of grammatical mistakes, refs are inaccurate, lots of misspelled words, confusing/repeating sentences). The drama only made it worse, the rumors made it unfun, and the community overall seems to lack maturity.
If Sutherland published new Legends or something similar, I'd definitely read them. But I doubt I'd read a whole new arc. No flame intended, but newer books are getting more and more hooked on romances that I'm mostly uninterested in. The main characters are mostly all "special" (royalty, have rare abilities, have mysterious superpowers), which is fine and all... but I wanna know more about each tribe society, culture, and common citizens (I want more world-building depth).
Some of these questions being answered in a Legends would be awesome:
- What was it like at the beginning of the War?
- What are the SkyWings like now, after the events of Escaping Peril?
- How does MudWing society work?
- How are the IceWings handling after the events of The Dangerous Gift?
- -- Are the lower ranking dragons relieved about these changes?
- What happened to Sora and Umber?
- What were the RainWings like before they became lazy and uneducated?
- What happened to Fathom and Indigo's dragonets?
- Are there any SandWings bitter about their current Queen?
Edit: Yeah, I can't help but agree that the addition of humans becoming main/major protagonists really hurt the series more than anything. It felt nice to have only dragons, I hope if Sutherland continues the series that she finds a way to bring the focus back to the dragons rather than the humans.
