I think this has been thoroughly canvased by previous repliers but consider: Sonic can look AWESOME (and daresay even better than his cartoon design in my opinion) in a more realistic look

This design looks more hedgehog-like than any other incarnation of Sonic, and could EASILY make a cool 3D model. But no instead they went with hairy calves Sonic
They should have made him look more ANIMAL than his cartoon version. instead they made him look more HUMAN and that is terrible

Oh boi the above art looks really cool, i'd definitley prefer that version oml
I myself just don't really like sonics design, it's pretty uncanny. Actually, i saw a lot of edits that didn't even change all that much that would make him look a lot better. Still kinda uncanny, but better. Also i just didn't like the trailer. At. All.
I'm not that fond of pikachu either, but at least he doesn't look uncanny. I just don't think the realistic style fits pokemon all that much in general?

I heard that the design was so hated that paramount is redesigning him

Can confirm, the redesign's underway! The real downside is that it's pretty much going to be crunch time for anyone working on the effects for Sonic since they're literally rushing before Nov 8. It's a real shame that they didn't keep the first reactions to the initial posters in mind, because this could have been avoided A LOT sooner.

NGL I'm kinda disappointed they're redesigning. I feel bad for the people working on it because Holy Crunch Time Batman, and honestly? I'd kinda accepted that this movie was going to be a beautiful disaster of a cult classic that we'd appreciate for meme purposes in about five-ten years.

I didn't mind Sonic's design that much, but anyone who puts human teeth on something that's not human needs to be banned from ever designing anything again.
Then again, sometime in the early 90s I saw a dude in a Sonic costume do promotion stuff and if I imagine the movie using that instead it just looks so much better despite being an early 90s costume, so...

I'm happy not everyone is buying the realistic Pokemon in Detective Pikachu. I have to admit, they've grown on me a little. They're not nearly as bad as Sonic in any way, thank God. (My condolences to Sonic fans.)
That said, it is a major disappointment to me that this big-budget Pokemon movie doesn't even seem to be set in "the Pokemon universe." —I haven't seen it yet, but I'm going to ASAP. I'm going off what I've seen so far.—
It is based on a spin-off game that no one asked for and then the anime. THEN it considers the games, the core of the entire series.
Their thought process on designing the Pokemon seems to be: Slap ugly and oftentimes over-the-top textures on them. Real fur doesn't look like that? Nah, it looks good.

someone pointed out that sonic's proportions (excluding his gigantic head) are super similar to that of an adult human man and hmmm.
i personally think a lot of the pokemon in detective pikachu look weird, but they manage to have a creepy-cute charm to them, where sonic just trips and falls headfirst into the uncanny valley

The team behind the movie consulted a longtime well-known Pokemon fan artist, who has made dozens of realistic Pokemon designs over the years, to give creative input on the movie.
Maybe it's because I have a more 'human' grasp of this person or something because following them has proven them to be 'real' but each and every time someone says something like "no care was put into these pokemon" like... I have to raise an eyebrow.
There's a lot of depth and detail in ALL of their work and they CLEARLY have a passion for it. To the point where comments like that and ones that seem to imply that it's just skin stretched over something or w/e confuse the absolute heck outta me, ha.
Obviously, there designs aren't fully the ones we see. There designs seem a lot more overly realistic in some instances. But I still can't really grasp the idea that it was done without any love for the franchise it's based around.
Edit: I also find it a bit goofy that people are pointing out Mr.Mime and Mewtwo as looking unsettling or creepy/scary when like... they're 100% supposed to, right? I mean I know the cartoons portray them as just as cutesy as all the other pokemon but IN universe you think it wouldn't be really creepy to just walk outside and there's a not-man man just miming at you? Or how Mew-Two and mew are sorta based on embryo's 'n all that? I can't imagine them not being creepy/unsettling, ha.
