Okay, so you've found the dragon you want, and you want to message the owner about it. STOP! Do not message them immediately! First, check for any notes, rules, etc. that would apply to the dragon. For example, tab descriptions, clan biographies, dragon biographies, and linked FAQs in clan bios are common places where you would find this information. Check this short checklist below for whether you should ask for the dragon at all.

Does the dragon's biography say anything about it not being for sale?
Does the description of the tab the dragon is in say anything about the contained dragons not being for sale?
Does the user's clan information say anything about dragons not being for sale? If so, does anything they specify apply to the dragon you want?
Does the user have a linked FAQ or anything similar to that in their clan information? Does that say anything about dragons not being for sale, and does it apply to the dragon you want?

If the answer to any of these questions is "Yes", do not message them about the dragon! There's nothing more annoying than getting messages about buying dragons that are clearly not available, and it's extremely rude to just ignore what people have written. While some people may make exceptions, assume they won't and leave them be.

If the answer to all of these questions is "No", we're on a good track! However, this doesn't give you the green light immediately. Move on to the next checklist.

Does the dragon have apparel?
Does the dragon have a familiar?
Is the dragon level 25 and in a coliseum team? (If it has the coli.png icon on it, it is)
Does the dragon have art or lore?

If the answer to any of these questions is "Yes", you probably shouldn't message them about the dragon. It's probably a permanent dragon they don't want to get rid of. Exceptions exist, but trying to buy it isn't recommended.

If the answer to all of these questions is "No", good news! The dragon might be available! Move on to the next step.

Step 2: Communication

Flexible-divider-100-copy.pngFlexible-divider-100-copy.pngFlexible-divider-100-copy.pngFlexible-divider-100-copy.pngFlexible-divider-100-copy.png

So there's a decent chance the dragon is available, now what? How do you politely ask for it? How you write your message is ultimately up to you, but below are some good practices and examples of good & bad messages.

Do's and Don'ts

DO:
Be polite! Remember to say please and thank you, be respectful to the owner, and remember that it is ultimately their dragon and their decision.
Use private messages instead of profile comments. Comments are harder to track and remember, and sometimes the notifications for them don't go through.
Provide a link to the dragon. Names and colors can be hard to remember or even repeated in the case of fodder, and requires the owner to find the dragon in what may be a very large lair. IDs, while unique to the dragon, are a hassle due to having to either replace an ID in a different dragon's link or hunt down a very specific set of numbers.
While definitely not required, it's often helpful to make a starting offer on the dragon. However, make sure to research prices so you don't offer too low and offend the owner!
Be patient. Not everyone is on the same timezone, and some users have limited availability. It may take time for them to get back to you.

DON'T:
Make demands. It doesn't matter if it's your dream dragon, a dragon you need for a project, a dragon someone bought faster than you, or fodder you don't want exalted. While the dragon is in their lair, it is their dragon and they have complete control over it. They are not obligated to deal with you. On top of being rude, trying to control what another user does with their dragons is considered harassment and against the rules.
Be rude. Treat others as you wish to be treated. We're all nerds on a dragon game and we don't come here to be harassed over pixels.
Spam their messages. Give people time to reply, and accept that sometimes people won't reply if they aren't interested.

Example Messages
These aren't templates, but just some examples of the do's & don'ts in action. Write your messages however you want!

Good
Quote:
Hello! I found your dragon here and was wondering if you would be interested in selling him. He would be perfect in my lair and I can offer 50kt as a starting offer. However, there's no pressure to sell him and I understand if you're not interested! Don't feel obligated to reply if you don't want to, and I apologize for the random message and if it's unwelcome.

Thank you for your time!
This is approximately the message I send when asking for dragons. Most of the time, it succeeds.
Quote:
Hello! I was wondering if you would be interested in selling Icewarden. If so, do you have a price in mind for him? I would love to buy him if possible! Thanks for reading, and sorry if these messages are unwelcome!
This is basically a shorter and less formal version of the first message. You can see I have a preference for telling people not to feel obligated to respond and to apologize ahead of time if they don't like these messages, but it's not required.
Quote:
Hi! You bought Icewarden for 7kt, but I've noticed he's in your fodder tab and I would rather he not get exalted. Would it be possible to buy him back or trade for a different fodder dragon?
When making these kinds of requests, it's extra important to check tab descriptions and user biographies for notes regarding fodder.

Bad
Quote:
Hello, I saw Icewarden in your lair and would like to buy him please.
It's got the spirit of politeness, but who is Icewarden? The user may have multiple dragons named Icewarden, or they may have a very big lair and have trouble finding this one dragon.
Quote:
You bought #6. Give him back to me now instead of exalting him. He's not fodder.
This is very rude and demanding on top of making the user go through the hassle of finding who you're even talking about.
Quote:
Can you sell me Icewarden please? Is there an amount you'd like?

What does it say? Well, regardless of what it says, you can probably handle it from here keeping the do's & don'ts from step 2 in mind. If they're willing to sell the dragon to you, congratulations! You got the thing! At this point, one of you will either set up a two-way Crossroads, or the owner of the dragon will set up a Private Auction with the dragon, and all that's left for you is to complete the transaction. There's only one important note here. Be prompt! Playtime can be limited and real life happens, but no one really wants to be holding a dragon for someone for long periods of time. Make sure you have the payment and space ready to minimize wait time, and if you only check in once or twice a day, consider checking in a little more often until the dragon is in your lair. This is especially important with CRs, which require interaction from both parties in order to complete. Step 3b: Accepting Defeat [emoji=skull size=1] Turns out they aren't interested in letting go of the dragon, or the dragon costs too much for you to feasibly afford, or maybe they didn't respond at all. It's sad you don't get the dragon, but it happens. If this does happen, keep the following in mind. [emoji=ping] Remember there's a human behind the screen, and that human is not obligated to sell any dragon or respond to any messages. Be respectful of their wishes and playstyle. [emoji=ping size=1] Don't get mad at them for it. It's a game about pixel dragons, and harassment is never okay. [emoji=ping] Most dragons are replaceable. If you couldn't get this one, try to find a different one that fits what you want.
