I've noticed a small bit of topical theme weeks for Flight Rising...
the week of March 3rd brought us the "Monster Hunters" Theme for that week. Which, incidentally-- if you look at my username, i was quite aware that Monster Hunter Wilds released just a couple days prior on the 28th. It's a broad enough topic, especially with the own monster hunting gear available, a monster hunter is not just someone who spends 20 hunts grinding for a Rathalos Plate, they're also a character like Van Helsig or Wyll Ravenguard.
Now there is an Elder Scrolls theme week, because of the Oblivion remaster. I am quite surprised it was semi-shadowdropped, in all honesty.
Anyways, I know it's best to have a theme week situated around in-site events, but i do honestly think they're really cool, and helps foster the imagination of many players, myself included, who make a bunch of fandragons about their other interests. And i'm sure the staff who enjoy these games as well would like to see these iconic characters translated into their pixel dragon game by fellow fans of the series!
I dunno, sometimes i peruse through a dragon share page and look at everyone's pretty dragons. so i always like when staff do something cute like this. I don't think every theme week should be topical to off site things, but i like it when it's sparse enough like this and adds some fun variety to the theme weeks.

Another topical theme week was the Birds of Prey theme week, which happened the same week the Eagles won the Superbowl in the US. The example/banner dragon even featured the Eagles team colors.
But yeah, I do like the theme weeks that go beyond the world of Flight Rising. It lets people share dragons that they likely wouldn't have shared otherwise, and that's nice!

I feel like there's some risk that comes with share themes that reflect real life stuff, since it can cause controversy.
For example, if for next year's Super Bowl they did another share theme based on the winning team, and hypothetically news came out the next day that someone on the team did a horrible crime, the share theme week would suddenly be really distasteful despite no bad intentions on staff's part.
Some controversy happened with today's theme, despite staff having good intentions; I don't think that means they shouldn't do themes based on real life, but it's definitely something that needs to be chosen carefully.

I think what works best is when theme week topics can have multiple interpretations and meanings.
For example, "Monster Hunters" could have been a reference to the video game or just a reference to the new hunter's apparel that was released. "Birds of Prey" was a reference to the Superbowl, but it also could simply be about real predatory birds.

Yeah I like them. There's only so many times you wanna participate in "show off your ancients" or "show off dragons with x gene" or festival weeks... it gets stale after a while and they've been doing it for a long long time. I do think it works best when the theme is a bit vague, like it could be a reference to something else but non-fans could still participate if their dragons still fits the theme.
Like. I showed off my Vaal Hazak during monster hunters week but I also showed off my in-sornieth guy who goes around hunting critters. I saw plenty of shade hunters and luminax wranglers that week too.
This last one I think was a little too specific; I know I saw it and was like welp I like the series but I don't have any fandergs for it. But I don't know how you could make it a more generalized topic without really totally losing the original reference.... like... Epic Fantasy Adventurers or something? Prophecy Given? I think the specificity was also what drew... folks to go off-topic. Something slightly more general probably wouldn't have that happen, it didn't for the birds or monster hunters at least as far as I know.

Yeah I hope this particular instance doesn't scare them off. I... never participate in theme weeks lol but I do want to see more fun and niche themes. Maybe then I'll actually participate, I dunno! Something as broad as "fantasy rpgs" would maybe draw me in *nods at my signature lmao* and avoid problems of specificity.
I thought the title said "Tropical" and was VERY confused when I got into the thread

Yes, you're right, that is what works best and what I try to do with them.
