4-6 winged amphitere. No legs to speak of. Or if they don't want full amphithere then a heavily winged lindwyrm would be good since it would only have two front legs.
I've wanted an aphithere ever since they said ancients would be a thing and that would allow them to break the mold. Most of the ancient designs have been too standard and Ill be really disapointed if they don't lean into the weird on this one.

It would be sick to see something like a sky rod/atmospheric beast. AKA those cryptids that are almost always just pictures of birds or bugs but shot in low speed so they get mistaken for unidentified animals.

I'm picturing tiny little guys with soft bodies that they flap around to fly, like marine flatworms.

They could have short, squishy little horns, and stumpy little legs with fat fingers, either a bunch of them in a row or maybe just a single pair of arms.

I know what causes the rod phenomenon; however I love it in terms of the idea of “aeroplankton”. I don’t know how I’d implement it in a dragon design though?

Here's a concept I made after seeing this post! It has 4 pairs of flipper-like wings with feathers, no arms/legs whatsoever, 3 tails, and a long wispy mane all along its back (would be the main location of the secondary gene)
I tried to make the shape of the head a bit more unconventional, and I also really want to see an ancient with front-pointing horns, so I added that too :)

@Bugbag i think the tail would be a really interesting and identifiable design point :D what a cool shape omg

they/them
Yeah, these geckos basically have winglets along their tail with a peduncle at the end to turn their body/steer. There’s also 2 “wings” that pop out from under their chin when they’re actually in the air.

I really want something with a manta ray/kitelike body. I know that manta rays are a fish, but I couldn't think of a better way to describe what I'm thinking. Basically, I want a dragon that could fulfill the kite aesthetic of Wind, and also have a unique body shape to distinguish it from moderns.

Edit: So, I just looked through the thread, and this is apparently NOT a unique idea, even down to saying word for word a "manta ray or kitelike body." Whoops!
