TOPIC | How do you choose names for dragons?
Insert title here. What naming conventions do you abide by when naming your dragons? Do you have a consistent style and method for naming, or is it different per dragon? Over half my lair is unnamed and I’ve realized it might be time to start thinking about names and such :p

I change up my method often. Using the name generator, behind the name, looking up lists of flowers, etc, combining words or plain old Wikipedia (lots of lists of things, and you can easily switch the language of a page to see what it's called in another country). I also have a goal to have the full alphabet. So a dragon whose name begins with A, then B, C, D, etc. There are some local naming conventions. My challenge dragons all have a naming theme (minerals, fruits, food, Nordic mythology, etc.) and my Sornieth-canon tab has naming schemes for each breed.
[emoji=imperial happy size=1] = Name of a god in various languages + surname based on parents. [emoji=nocturne happy size=1] = Copies another species naming [emoji=coatl happy size=1] = Metals in various languages [emoji=skydancer happy size=1] = Rearranged latin names for birds [emoji=wildclaw happy size=1] = Flora appropriate to their element. Can be any language.
I don't have any consistent style (deliberately; I like keeping my options open). Naming is hard.

Some of my go-tos:
- Names from fiction, even if the dragon is not a fandragon. Sometimes it's based on vibes; sometimes I just like the name. (e.g., Camlann, Zanarkand, Aglionby)
- Real words - sometimes more "serious"/"cool" words (Gestalt, Revenant, Myriad), sometimes more goofy (Taco, Spud)
- Googling random things - e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_proper_names_of_stars
- Fantasy keysmash
- ^ However I am not good at thinking of fantasy names so sometimes I ask around on discord, I have friends who are really good at it

I usually name mines after Greek mythology deities and characters based on what their appearance reminds me of or what I intended the character to be, like: [columns] [nextcol] Mmm, a Sandsurge, the breed comes from the Charged Barrens located in the lightning flight, and their colors and genes reminds me of a lightning amidst a dark sky so I'll give her the name of a lightning goddess (for some reason I couldn't name her the Greek versión so i went with the Roman name instead). [/columns] And if like that I don't find a name that works I 1) go to Google translate and grab words that relate to the key elements of a dragon and translate them to latin or 2) look up on Google "names that mean __" and try to find a cool sounding name.

I don't really have a set of rules I follow as an OVERALL rule, but I do have rules for certain things. For examples, any G1 Primal I keep has to have a name that ends with "-ainne" while any Primal I personally hatch and decide to keep has to have a name ending with "-wyn".

Other than that, if the dragon wasn't bought or hatched for something specific, which will usually already have a name planned for them, I usually just use the randomiser and go without whatever sounds nicest.

If they have a name from the AH/whatever I got them from, I keep that.

If they don't, they usually stay Unnamed, that's my favourite name ! I do give them specific names when needed tho (keeping them all Unnamed is tricky when breeding ahah) !

I don't have much of a system - heck I've named dragons Muffintin and Milkshake just because I was baking and remembered my old job making muffins and the pain of a certain machine breaking down again. I also have heavy lore implications for others like Asher, Ash, or Farland. Basically it boils down to:

1. Does it make sense
2. If they're not in major lore, would their name be distracting from anything serious that they'd be apart of
3. If they're in major lore, does it match what they're about or what they were meant to be?

If yes to 1+2 or 1+3 then yippee! If not I usually leave them unnamed or with whatever name they came with

most of my dragons have a food theme, so i tend to name them based on food. my lovely Tundra in my pfp is called Tender, since she looks like a fried chicken :)
at some point, i started picking up dergs that didn't quite match the theming, so i extended my naming conventions to household objects (Mortar), animal species (Ahli), and even words based on my own native language (CheonJi)
above all else, of course, is that it has to sound cool. why name a dragon pineapple when a way cooler word like ananas exists?
