There's a history and a reason, it's absurdist humor meant to lighten the weight of the actual experience. No one is actually being accused of anything, no one in their right mind would say this stuff seriously, and if they do, most queer folks would be the first in line to reprimand them.

If that's how you cope, that's fine! But I really don't think it's appropriate for a large, public space where you don't know if everyone is okay with it.

This. Making light of homophobia when it's alive and well in the world is really uncomfortable, especially considering how bad the anti-LGBT law attempts have been in the US this year. If that's how you cope, that's fine! But I really don't think it's appropriate for a large, public space where you don't know if everyone is okay with it.
