For my Valentine's Day lore-whining, I worked on Aodh! Oddly enough, he's one of the only dragons within the Flock that doesn't have a significant other, but I needed to work on his anyways, so let's just say that the irony is intentional. I didn't make too much progress, but I'm happy with what I got done. I predict the most difficult thing I'll have to do is find a couple themesongs for him, but then again, that's a pretty tricky feat for all my dragons other than a select few.

Considering it's Valentines (or was, shhh), it seemed only proper to write something for my resident pink boy, Ren. That said, beyond 'likes pink' I really didn't have any sort of personality or anything figured out for him, so I spent a lot of time just staring at him and whispering 'who are you' lol

Next, to celebrate the release of Arlo (not that I included anything about him), I wrote a little for Mason!

Both of them still need to be fleshed out, but hey, It's something! \o/

Some unexpected irl stuff meant I couldn't write yesterday. Might try to get Algae's page done before next LWD.

I have completed bios with lore for Valtane, my clan's original Coatl, and his mate, Randi, who acts as an interpreter for him and any other Coatls who may pass through the clan. I do incorporate the Fae monotone detail, but I've never had anyone act as a dedicated interpreter specifically for that. (As a way of rendering Fae monotone in text, I tend to have all my Fae dragons speak like Data from Star Trek: TNG, with no contractions and with the most precise language I can think of.) In my lore, Sornieth has more-or-less-universal literacy; clans that aren't big enough to have their own dedicated teacher or tutor can choose to send their hatchlings to primary schools, of which the largest number are in the Sunbeam Ruins, of course.

Eh, not had the inspiration/motivation to write much recently. Braille and sign language exists in my lore, since I do have a couple of dragons who’re deaf/hoh, blind or mute. Mordred (blind) also has his mate to guide him round, though he can also use his whiskers (he’s an Imperial) if Morcant isn’t available to do so. Dread and Melody use sign language, or write things down. Some breeds might have different signs for different things, which might cause confusion, but generally things get worked out. Yeah, my clan has a writing system. I’d say it’s more or less universal, but again, some breeds might have different words for various objects. They will also use symbols if they need to keep a message secret or if they’re in a hurry.

I do remember their song-like language and I'd include that if I ever got a perma-coatl. As for faes, Dewdrop has practiced using facial expressions and inflection to communicate with other breeds of dragons. She's quite expressive in the way of speech out of necessity (she travels/travelled), but the other faes aren't as good at communicating "normally". Clanmates are taught basic fae-crest-speak for this reason. No translators for faes, but as for deaf/mute/blind dragons who were hatched that way, a simple enchantment is performed to restore their sense(s). Dragons who have disabilities for other reasons (magicked by an enemy, etc.) and cannot be assisted with spells may have an interpreter with them. I don't actually have any dragons who're deaf, mute, blind, disabled in my lore yet, because I've barely written any lore... BUT if there were dragons like that, sign language (like fae-crest-speak gosh I need a better name for that) and braille would exist. I like to think Sornieth has a universal spoken/written language, like English, and some clans/regions have their own languages or dialects. My clan speaks using their own language amongst themselves, and they use the written form of said language to write clan-specific scrolls. When communicating with strangers or writing general Sornieth history, that universal language is used. (Sornian? Sornish? Sorniethan? Sor... nitch?) The spoken language would sound like a mix of Russian, German, and Chinese, and the written language would somewhat resemble Chinese and Arabic characters. Maybe. I haven't really thought this through.

Today, I’m hoping to either finish Tyr's backstory altogether, or get a start on Ophthalma's lore. Who knows, maybe if I have some extra motivation, I’ll finally write a bit more for Disunion as well.

As for the prompt, I don’t know if it really applies to my dragons the same way that it applies after all. After all, my clan— or, well, clans— consists of multiple groups of (mostly) mono-breed dragons. They don’t often take in dragon species that aren’t of the prevailing Ancient breed, and when they do, it is never anything other than a breed that hails from their element.

The Gaolers are not really affected by the whole interspecies language barrier thing. They can understand Fae just fine even despite their monotone inflection; in fact, since the Gaolers don’t really rely on facial expression to determine the meaning in the words of others, rather tuning in to the energy radiating from the speaker, they can actually understand Fae better than most other breeds. Coatls are another issue, but my Gaolers hardly ever have to deal with them. They tend to stay away from the Fire region, and if they ever do come across a Coatl, there’s usually already a translator on site ready to help their feathered friend do business. In a worst-case scenario where they must deal with the Coatl alone, the Gaoler Caravan will always look to Marko for guidance, not only because of his Fire element, but also because he is the most scholarly of the group.

The Banescales don’t have this problem at all. They already have two Coatls in their Flock, and can speak native Draconian just fine, so they don’t have any problems with dealing with Coatls or Faes. If a Banescale wasn’t already bilingual before joining the Flock, then you better bet they learned how to communicate with their best healer, Aodh, pretty damn quick. If they ever need to deal with a Fae who, for some reason of another, needs to talk to Aodh or Ophthalma, one of the members of the Flock will happily step in to translate.

@After might I be put on the ping list? Might be a good way to ensure I actually finish writing out lore for all the dragons in my Bottleneck challenge (which I should not have chosen to do lore for, but here we are :P)
