Champ was tired, so so tired despite laying in his nest most of the day, but he knew that falling asleep now wasn’t an option. He stayed awake all night, alert to everything and anything, his ears trained to the sounds outside his den less the killer target him tonight. Maybe he should be outside patrolling like a real leader, but he had already failed at that. Without the courage to go outside and look after the rest of the dying clan, he at least mustered up the determination to protect himself.
Listening closely, he heard the sound of water? No, something slightly thicker pouring onto the ground outside along with slow footsteps. Champ nuzzled Gia, telling the gryphlet to stay in the nest, before standing up, his maw opened in a threatening manner as he walks up to his door to investigate. As he brings his arm up to the door, Champ’s claws hesitate for a moment.
Should he? He has stayed inside so long he is apprehensive to see what’s on the other side.
Should he just stay inside and what happens happens? He hopes the others have left already. Champ gets lost in thought for a minute before he turns around and sees Gia looking at him with curiosity, before turning back around at the door. “I will go out, but not for long, stay here Gia.”
Eventually Champ opened the door to the darkness outside as a rush of fresh air came over his scales, but with it carried the smell of oil. Sniffing and looking down he sees flammable oil has encircled the entire perimeter of his den,
did the killer plan to light my den on fire? Looking out into the darkness, it’s difficult to see anything, but something reflects the moonlight into his eye for a moment as he sees a dragon carrying something or
somethings towards his den.
That must be the killer! His double set of claws extends into the dirt as Champ gains traction to rush towards the dragon with newfound determination. The killer in surprise drops one of the things they were carrying as they run back towards the forest, making it to the tree line before they seem to disappear.
After searching in the forest for a while, Champ couldn’t find the killer, his heart was pounding in his chest as he recovered from the adrenaline, as he walked back to where the killer dropped one of their things, he finds a large round rock from the forest.

Champ would finish off the evening by covering the oil with sand to make it safe, before watching the sun rise to a morning without death.
