Roll says… 3: How close?

“So how close are we to the forest?” you say when the silence has gone on long enough.

All Black doesn’t even look your way to answer. “That big chunk of shadows up there is the border.”

You turn your head a little to the side to get a better look. He’s right – through the rain, you can see the outline of something humongous and just a little darker than the sky. You can’t quite tell where it ends on the horizon, or if it ends at all, but the sharp, jagged lines in the sky indicate trees. Not that you’ve seen a whole lot of what they call “redwoods”, but you know that they’re tall and have pointed crowns. You can’t tell how big they’re supposed to be from here, though.

“How far away is that?” you ask.

“Half a day at most,” All Black says curtly.

Conversation fades out after that. You’re still watching for unwelcome company, he’s just walking that funny newt walk and leading you down the road. You can’t really think of anything else to say, so you opt to be silent. All Black seems content with that.

Time drags on, and the rain starts pummeling the ground. You’re absolutely miserable by the time the lightning starts up again. Every flash and roar of thunder makes you jump and walk a little faster, until you’re overtaking your guide. He simply picks up the pace and gets back in the lead, giving you a dry look every time you cower at the sudden noise. You try to react as little as possible, but it’s hard when you’re not used to this awful, loud phenomenon.

Slowly, as you go on, you start hearing an unfamiliar noise. It’s like a rush of something that sort of sounds like the rain hitting a pond, except harder and continuous. You can’t place what it is, but it makes you incredibly nervous for reasons you can’t explain. All the while, the black of the forest is growing, and the sky is getting dimmer and dimmer, until there’s practically no light to reflect off of the puddles in the road.

It feels like entire seasons pass before the rain stops. So does All Black, so suddenly that you take a few steps ahead of him before noticing him pause. It’s now so dark that you can barely see him a few inches away from you, and that noise is getting louder and louder.
