When you die on land, you die where you lived. You join the sky or the earth or the fire. You are mourned by loved ones who return to the resting places of their flights and clans for year after year after year. Or maybe you just feed whatever neighbor finds you first.
When you die in the sea above the abyssal trenches, you sink. It is tradition for any friends or family to accompany the deceased on their journey downwards - furthest for those who will be missed the most. But even the most cherished members of any community will find themselves in depths no living dragon can follow. The beings down there only know light and color as traps, only know the living above as blessings, sent down to sustain them.
In the deepest depths of the abyss, food is scarce. Schools of Dragonfall Fish and Worms will burrow into bodies and carry them along, slowly eating away at the inside, avoiding any other lifeforms for fear of their current home being stolen. A healthy swarm will keep the original form of the body for as long as possible, transforming it into a thriving hub of life once again, until the swarm grows too large and splits or the body disappears completely, and the cycle begins anew...

Occasionally the magic will inhabit the bare-bones remains left behind, granting them a kind of undeath.
