Basan are a fowl-type bird that live in the eastern portion of the world. They are easily recognized by their bright red comb and brilliantly colored plumage which appears like tongues of flame. Their most notable feature is their breath, which flows visibly from their mouth like a dragon’s fire. However, the flame gives off no heat, nor does it ignite combustible material.

[columns]About the subspecies
I love the folklore and legendary creatures of Japan, so much so that my clan is based in the Wind Flight, and I collect themed subspecies like koi and kitsune dragons.
I also love chickens, but I noticed there was a distinct lack of subspecies related to them (or, at least active ones). I decided this would be a nice addition to my hatchery, and maybe someone else out there will enjoy my funky, fiery birds!_____________________[nextcol]

[columns][emoji=book 2 size=1]Origins[emoji=old parchment size=1]
History of the Basan dragons is somewhat muddled. Some legends say that the Basan dragons originated from the Fire flight, but made their home in the thick bamboo groves of the Windswept plateau. Though their offspring would bear bright green eyes of the steppes, they never lost their glint.
[emoji=wind rune size=4]
Others claim that the fowl were native to the steppes, but during a firestorm of the Flamecaller's design, they were imbued with a magic so potent that they metamorphosized into dragons.
[emoji=fire rune size=4]
Even others claim that the Gladekeeper sought to bring life to eggs that had died during a wildfire, and in doing so, revived the Basan, not unlike a phoenix.
[emoji=nature rune size=4]
Regardless of their origins, Basan dragons are secretive but spectacular creatures, that, in spite of possessing a literal fire power, prefers to hide out in the thicket of jungle cover, be it made of bamboo or bushes.[nextcol]______[nextcol]

Behavior
On whole, this subspecies is somewhat shy, and parents prefer to raise their clutches away from the hustle and bustle of big cities. While the individual Basan can have quite the big personality, privacy is value that has deep emphasis in their culture. They tend to be nocturnal.
[emoji=insect size=4][emoji=meat size=4][emoji=seafood size=4][emoji=plant size=4]
Basan dragons have a unique diet. Though they'll consume food that is standard of their breed's dietary restrictions, they often seek out burned organic matter, such as firepit residue or smoldering charcoal. There is many a story of basan dragons sneaking into the main lair to eat the ashes of the fire, though whether modern Basan deny it because it's a myth, or out of embarrassment, is unknown.
In modern Basan households, spicy food with a crisp, fried texture is commonplace. Vegetarian dishes are not uncommon either, given the breeds that Basan dragons tend to be.[/columns]

[columns]Abilities
Basan dragons are unique in that no matter what flight they are born into, they retain their ability to breathe fire. What is affected, however, is the color and Special Properties of their flames. Fire, Wind, and Nature dragons are the most readily studied, so sadly, there is not much documentation on Basan dragons outside of these elements. But it's entirely likely that they each have their own unique properties.

[sub]Fire: These dragons breathe the standard orange flame. These flames are not as powerful as that of many other fire subspecies, but they are dangerously precise. Like a centaur armed with a bow and arrow, these dragons snipe targets so effectively, that many mistake their firebolts for a dart or bullet with a vanishing spell.
Nature: These dragons breathe a deep green flame. This fire breath is unique in that though it is otherwise identical to fire, and can be used to cook, or provide light or heat, it does not detrimentally affect any plant life. The effect is only apparent in living plant matter (ie: kindling still catches flame, but a potted plant would not), allowing the dragons to provide warmth to their kin without causing a raging forest fire.
Wind: These dragons breathe a lime-colored flame. The fire seems to have the traits of illusion magic, causing confusion in the target, causing them to hallucinate that there are multiples of the Basan dragon, or that they've vanished into thin air altogether. What's worth noting is that while not a specialized as that of Nature's flames, the fire will not scorch the native flora of the Windswept plateau, allowing the dragon to shoot fire at an enemy from the safety of the thick bamboo and grasses of the steppes.[/sub][/columns]
Other elements have not been as extensively studied as these, but it's likely that they each have their own unique properties.

Due to their long-lasting warmth, it is a common to see both dragons and serthis gathering these curious embers for use in the persistent heating of lairs or cauldrons.

Preferences
Every dragon is unique, and even among Basan dragons, you'll have individuals that stand out. However, here are a few things you will find many individuals quite enjoy!
If your dragon is calling to you and telling you it has preferences that aren't on this list, then don't feel obligated to force them into a pigeonhole. These are chickens, after all!
Apparel
Generally, Basan dragons love feathers, fiery pieces (metal jewelry is a favorite), and items themed after either the Viridian Labyrinth or Windswept Plateau. In addition to this, many Basan dragons lean into looking like a junglefowl or rooster, donning fluffy coats and gobbles.
Here are some things you might find in a Basan's wardrobe, color varying with the dragon's preferences.

Basan are gentle souls who love taking on a familiar. Their preferences often include other forest or steppe-dwelling denizens, birds, or firey creatures. If they take on a Beastclan Familiar, they usually prefer Talonok, or Kitsune. Here's just a small assortment of creatures you'll find in the wake of a Basan dragon!

Hello! If you've got a Wildclaw pair in the works, I'd like to maybe snag a baby. I've got a breeding project in the horizon for a Wildclaw with similar colours, and a baby like this would be a helpful potential parent. (Spearmint/Jungle/orange range)
