YERSINIA
Thank you @/HellsPurestDevil for the creation of this subspecies!
Named for the bacteria they are infected with, Yersinia are foul, cruel, and tend to be uncaring, though physically they are slow. Highly regarded as one of the worst disease-ridden subspecies in all of the 11 flights, the Yersinia are not to be trifled with. In fact, it is within one's best interest to steer clear of them. They come in many forms due to multiple manifestations of the original disease. All members of this subspecies begin as S.Yersinia (Starter Yersinia), before progressing into one of three states of permanence. They may be referred to differently depending on their mutation of the original plague. These are B.Yersinia (Bubo Yersinia), N.Yersinia (Necrotic Yersinia), and R.Yersinia (Raging Yersinia), respectively. Their physical appearance also changes along with the infection they carry.

BREED SPECIFIC: Imperial | Ridgeback |Guardians |Snapper; R.Yersinia will almost always be imperial

Yersinia Subspecies!
The Beginning

Though how Yersinia came to be is unknown, the epicenter of the originating plague is thought to be in or around The Sea of a Thousand Currents, the first strain having presumably been incubated within young Guardians who'd come into contact with the disease when they first began their 'search'. The rest ensued in a bad chain of events with the infected dragons traveling unaware, contaminating other inhabitants who in turn passed it on other beings, so on and so forth. Smaller breeds such as faes and nocturnes who were affected quickly became the first casualties of the mysterious illness, their small bodies unable fend off the disease. Larger dragons such as Imps, Ridgebacks and Guardians were more fortunate, as their bodies were able to combat the disease a bit better than their smaller comrades... if being driven insane by fever could be considered lucky. This caused a drastic change in personality, turning them into the foul creatures they are today.

When the disease first started to spread, many clans were at a loss. The rising death tolls caused widespread panic and led many clan leaders to do drastic things, including finding scapegoats, many being Beastclans, and dragons who were unaffected due to isolation or other factors. Accusations soon began to arise that those in question had caused the disease by deliberately poisoning watering holes and wells. Many other incriminating suspicions followed, as well as suggestions on how to combat the infection. Then an idea was proposed by the Nature flight, which had suffered major casualties: employ dragons of the Fire flight to exterminate potentially infected groups in "controlled burnings" since the immense heat they could produce made it almost impossible for disease to incubate.

The flights agreed.

The Burnings

By the time the flights decided on a course of action, much of the population had been wiped out. The Yersinia became one of the most devastating pandemics in dragon history, with death tolls peaking most severely in the Nature flight at 30–60 percent loss of its population. Overall, the emergence of Yersinia reduced the world population from an estimated 450 million to between 350 and 375 million.
When the burnings began, the plan was to round up "priority number 1" infected, those whose bodies were completely consumed by the disease, with no chance of being healed, and 'Certain Dragons who had become too dangerous and aggressive to keep around the public'. The Burnings were successful for the most part, as much of the infected were wiped out. Towards the end of the 4th year since the emergence of the Yersinia, the disease seemed to have petered out.

That was, until stranger forms started showing up as something known as "Mutant Yersinia". These were presumed to be elder Yersinia, among the first infected, who survived the Burnings and had begun to breed. These Yersinia demonstrated greater strength and immune against any and all attempts to wipe them out. This included a new method of exposing victims to various disease, a resistance to heat, and a resistance to any and all drugs that were used to try and heal them in the beginning.

Their evolution is all thanks to Plaguemama, who'd found them to be most intriguing creatures and refused to see their existence extinguished. Instead, she blessed them with these new traits.

The Plea

Afraid of having to go through another war against these ticking time bombs, many pleaded with the Plague flight, who had been silent throughout the years this was going on, to take the disease-ridden pests away and keep them within their borders. The Plaguelings agreed, believing that the Yersinia would come to be of great use for spreading the rot and disease they loved so much.

And so many of these dragons were banished to the Scarred Wasteland while others who refused to leave were killed by survivors of the pandemic. With their banishment came the end of the Yersinia plague, but marked the start of the Yersinia Clan under the watchful eye of the Mother of Pestilence.

CHARACTERIZING NOTES
 • Necrosis Yersinia(N. Yersinia) and Bubo Yersinia(B. Yersinia) are more common than Raging Yersinia(R. Yersinia). R. Yersinia are rarest due to them having been more successfully destroyed than other types. Second to their number is Bubo, with Necrosis being more common. Only the Starter Yersinia(S. Yersinia) may compete as far as rarity. This is more because since their banishment they were unable to infect dragons with the plague. Whatever S-types were left beyond the plaguelands either died or mutated.
 • N. Yersinia tend to live in caves. B. Yersinia has one distinct territory and R. Yersinia are almost always nomadic.
 • R. Yersinia has the most voracious appetite. They may also be cannibalistic towards each other, their young and other dragons.
 • B. Yersinia and R. Yersinia, should they ever cross paths with each other, will almost always fight. N. Yersinia tend to be cowardly and attack by ambush.

SYMPTOMS OF AFFLICTION

The Yersinia plague is often the first of a progressive series of illnesses. Symptoms appear suddenly, usually within 2–5 days after exposure to the bacteria. Symptoms include gangrene of the extremities (toes, wings, tail, snout, and ears), chills, general feelings of unwellness, high fever (102+ °F), muscle cramps, and seizures. During one adaptation of the disease painful swelling of the lymph glands will develop. These nodes are often referred to as a bubo. They commonly form in the groin area, but may occur in the armpit or neck, as well as any site of infection transmission. In extreme cases, scale color may change to dull or blackish-green colors.

Other symptoms include heavy breathing, continuous vomiting of blood, aching limbs, coughing, and extreme pain. The pain is usually caused by the decay or decomposition of the skin while the dragon is still alive. Additional symptoms include extreme fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, lenticulae (black dots scattered throughout the body), delirium, and coma.

This rot is caused by a variation of gangrene that was commonly seen in those with the originating Yersinia plague. When a N. Yersinia decays, their scales and skin disintegrate into small flecks of dust, along with deeper tissues as it progresses. It is with these flecks that infection is transmitted. They tend to walk stiffly and slowly due to lack of moisture of the joints and skin, but they do not feel pain as their sensory nerves have been destroyed. It is because of their slowness that they are easier to quarantine than their B. Yersinia counterparts. This type is also odorless, making it very difficult to discern their proximity at night. A thing of note is that these dragons develop a tremor; it is not uncommon to see them with a cloud of blackness around them. N. Yersinia possesses a notably strange way of spreading disease. During an encounter, a N. Yersinia will repeatedly flap its wings, causing a gale of rot to be blown in the victim's direction. Once this is inhaled, the warm moisture of the respiratory tract incubates the disease. For safety it is recommended that one wear a gas mask while in the presence of these creatures. In addition to this, they will lick and bite their own flesh to project dry rot and saliva into the eyes of a target. Buttons

The Following buttons are to be used in the respective bios of official variant dragons for this subspecies, and if you'd like to toss them anywhere else like your clan profile or your signature. Each button should link back to this forum. A Huge thank you to @/Kunikida at Tsubaki Designs for all of these graphics!
