Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the “subspecies” that is taking up all of my time and resources here on this lovely little pet sim we call Flight Rising! Just as a note, this is a super informal sort of “listing”, mostly just me talking through why I decided to go with what genes and colors for the subspecies below. I now have a hatchery up and running too!

If you’ve clicked the link, you already know what you’re here for: Ball Python Dragons! Since I am basing my variations (aka: morphs) on real ball python patterns and colors, I’ve decided to name the subspecies something more specific as well- Python regius, which is the scientific name for the Royal Python, aka the Ball Python.

Ball python themed dragons aren’t the most hard to come by- there are definitely other people who have done this before, and have different takes on their dragon styling. It seems hard to find any concrete subspecies listings for these dragons, though, or even any sort of breeding network. So, I’ve created my subspecies outline, as well as my own little hatchery for these little snoots!

Basics
All of the morphs will be listed in full detail below, but the very basics for my subspecies is still a little loose- mostly because what fun is it to be too specific?
Breed: Breed Change: Spiral Breed Change: Snapper Breed Change: Coatl
While a specific breed isn't mandatory, Spiral is the obvious first choice, while Coatl and Snapper are my preferred second choice
Genes: Primary Gene: Python Secondary Gene: Morph Tertiary Gene: Underbelly
For most of the following morphs, Python, Morph, and Underbelly will make up the gene base. There are specific variations which have other genes, but I'd expect to see, well, exactly what you came here for- Python Dragons

Terminology
Because this is a more “scientific” subspecies listing, I’ve taken some terms to use to help specify my morphs as well.

Morph - based in the real life term “morphology” - this just means the color (XYZ) and pattern (genes) of the dragon in question. Most morphs will have a limited gene set and a small number of colors to separate them from other dragons of similar genes.

“True” - based on the idea of a pairing “breeding true” to their genes - this is my term for a dragon which perfectly fits the P. regius morph associated with it. It means the colors and the genes directly match, and in some cases, the eyes as well.

“Het” - based on the term “heterozygous”, which means a snake may not appear as one morph, but it does hold the genes for it - this is the term I will be using for any dragon which is very close to the “true” mark, but just barely misses it. It is usually a reference to color, since a color one or two off can really change the way a morph looks to me.

"Off" - a dragon who, despite coming from a breeding pair that can produce "True" variants, for some reason doesn't fit any part of the subspecies. I have a few breeding pairs with gem genes that I just don't feel like replacing, and on the off chance that those genes are thrown, those hatchlings will be labeled "off".

And you would think for ball pythons, this would be the same, right? Not so fast! Hypo seems to describe the brightness in a lot of ball python morphs rather than truly lacking any melanin. I decided to make a "traditional hypo" morph, although this still varies species to species. My coloration here is based on the common boa, of which my friend had a hypo. She was the absolute best! Banana Morph
True - Banana/Banana/Maize

That soft lilac glow, the gentle yellow patches, the tiny black freckles- well, FR doesn’t have the freckles, but hey, a person can dream! That’s right, it’s my absolute favorite ball python morph, the Banana Ball Python! Okay, all excitement aside? This morph was actually really hard to find dragons for. Mojave is a super variable morph in ball pythons as far as color goes, but typically they are recognized by a pattern called the "mojave pattern". Sadly, that's not going to be conveyed easily through FR, so I chose to limit the mojave morph down to yellow and white- yellow gives a rich brown/black base pattern and bright yellow patches like most mojaves, and despite how variable they are, almost all mojave have white bellies. Cinnamon Morph
Auburn/Auburn/Cream
Het (Tert): Maize, White
WoBP - Cinnamon

Next is a morph that looks similar to the wild type, but typically has more rich colors and contrasts - Cinnamon! To be fair… I may actually prefer this morph over the wild type, at least in flight rising. Angelfall does a wonderful job modelling, though, so maybe it’s just because of her influence.

Lesser Morph
Tert: Stained
Honey/Honey/Maize
WoBP - Lesser

Lesser is essentially a "washed out" morph, looking a lot like mojave or ghost while also just being super pale about it. As an FR morph this is proving elusive to find and breed, but I shall persist! Because of the "washed out" nature of this morph, something akin to a sandbelly variation isn't really possible.

Leucism is a condition similar to albinism, where there is reduced color in the animal, but unlike albinos there is still color deposited in the eyes - and for some animals, a faint pattern still remains. I don’t have any Hets for this morph, and eye color is relative. The scry shown here has ice eyes, but I’m a fan of water eyes for a richer blue.[nextcol] [/columns] ----- [columns] [nextcol] Clown Morph ----- Leopard/Clouded, Rosette/Contour Yellow/Yellow/Obsidian ----- Het (Prim/Sec): Honey, Lemon Het (Tert): Oilslick-Shadow ----- WoBP - Clown Clown morphs are a bit goofy looking. WoBP - Mystic Potion

Listed as Mojave Mystic on the morph list, I’m a fan of the more goofy- or cool?- name of Mystic Potion. This is a morph that I didn’t even know existed until I went looking for a good list to get ideas from. I feel like Eye Spots gives a good representation of the long line of single spots this morph has, over something like Clouded. This is a morph with some good variety- Ice eyes would be preferable to get the closest match, but not mandatory; the stripe could also be a softer yellow color, but I like the crispness of the white on silver.

While labeled as Super Lesser on the morph list, I’ve most commonly known this morph as Blue-Eyed Leucistic, or BEL. Leucism is a condition similar to albinism, where there is reduced color in the animal, but unlike albinos there is still color deposited in the eyes - and for some animals, a faint pattern still remains. I don’t have any Hets for this morph, and eye color is relative. The scry shown here has ice eyes, but I’m a fan of water eyes for a richer blue.

Originally I was wanting to do a python/morph pattern, but no, nothing had the bright white and yellow this morph needs. Then I figured hey, stained over white could do the trick? No, it still just looks washed out… I finally settled on piebald/paint, since the patterns on albino ball pythons are already closer to the splotchiness of a piebald pattern. Stained was the next best tert, as it brought out the difference between the white and the yellow. Then… I discovered the issue that haunts me with previous morphs… Yellow primaries and secondaries almost never coincide with white-range tertiaries. What was I to do? I had several morphs linked to this yellow/white or honey/maize sort of coloration, and albino was one that absolutely couldn’t be changed. So: I’ve started specifically breeding for yellow/yellow/ice “true” albinos, and I’ve dramatically lowered my standards! As in real life, albino morphs are going to be much more variable than one set of colors or genes would allow. While I’ve still got my “white whale” in the yellow/ice XXY, I decided that maybe the other yellow ranges don’t look hideous, and perhaps I could even save us all some money by using underbelly over stained. Hence: why albino gets its own page, why it got this recipe-prelude style description, and why there are more than just two models below. Enjoy! I've been thinking about that too! Female Imps and Skydancers have been common with my breeding pairs and I'm liking their look too. Perhaps boggies will get added~
