As for gen 1's with more of a story behind their "I can't believe this": One of my friends did a mass-hatch a while back. They told us exactly how they'd price the dragons they didn't keep. I was on the hunt for an Earth element, brownish primary female Snapper, because it's an aesthetic I had recently kinda fallen in love with. So I went scrying through the Earth dragons in the hatch until I found the perfect candidate. I wasn't exactly poor, but I wasn't really gem-rich either, and my plan for her had a couple of gem genes, so I decided to wait until her price was lowered the next day before I bought her.
And then she got bought by someone else.
I was bummed, but I mean fair is fair, right? It's their dragon now. I messaged them, though, telling them "congrats on getting that dragon I was eyeing, what are your plans for her?" It turns out she was going to be a potential project/backup dragon - the person was looking for a male with similar colors. I said "cool" and went on my way.
Two days later, the owner messaged me back again. They said they'd found other dragons who were better for the project, and sent me the one that I had messaged about :O I don't remember whether I paid them back for her or if I got her for free, but I have her now and she's [i]beautiful[/i].

i'm in the exact same spot of attempting to replace my non-g1s with g1 versions - 7 to go! so far, i've been doing the dragons whose colors/genes could've used a bit of work as-is, which makes it much easier to find a suitable g1 for them.
i'm pretty good at finding cheap g1s that scry out gorgeously, which would be lovely if it wasn't such a plague on my wallet. some of my favorite finds:

i remember i had a similar situation to you when i first moved to a g1 lair!! there were a bunch of non-g1s that i was attached to and didn't expect to find a g1 version of, but luckily i got lucky a couple times~
first was this girl!! i had a pistachio/peach/peach gal just like her that i loved so much, but then i saw this gal on a trade thread that worked PERFECTLY as a g1 version so ofc i had to have her <3

When I found her, I just looked at the colors and said "heyyy that's pretty nice" and bought her right then. Afterwards, I did some scrying, and realized how amazingly her colors matched. I'm planning her to be python/noxtide/veined and hopefully I can get an unusual, faceted, or dark sclera out of her. But of course a multigaze or primal wouldn't hurt.
