"Demicus, hush." The elderly dragon Efren called his three clanmates over to where Nightsong lay, a celestial-looking Skydancer tending to her injuries. "We've got to do something to get rid of these mimics," the Imperial growled. "Ourselves. Nobody else can get out of the canyon, and we can't get back in, and I'm not sure why. I think there's some sort of defense mechanism activated, but we're stuck out here." He turned to look back at the chasm behind him, where a flash of blue as one of the Gaoler village guards - Kylara, probably - was fighting to get out. "If these means battle, I'm ready!" Demicus shuffled his feet, the spines along his back raising up in anticipation. The Skydancer healer only nodded, still focused on checking out the two Nocturnes. "Terrowin? What's your thoughts on this?" Efren turned to a dark Pearlcatcher, wrapped in bandages with a wolf cape obscuring his face. "I don't care. If we fight, we fight. Just get this over with." Terrowin snorted. "Then it's settled. Once these two are healed up," Efren motioned to Nightsong and Voidsong, "we'll make sure they get out of here safely, and then we'll try to finish this. I already have a plan." The first step was to figure out where the mimics were coming from, and why they were targeting dragons. Efren took a few stiff running steps, flapped his wings, and leapt into the air. Demicus was quick to follow, taking a position right behind the Imperial. Thana fell in on the right, and Terrowin grudgingly filled in the leftmost position. In the night, the desert was even darker than it was during the day, stormclouds blotting out the moon and stars. The flashes of lightning were blinding in the darkness, but these dragons were used to it. The sandy ground left trails where the mimics had come from, weaving between rocks and cacti. Terrowin let out a loud swear, stopping so suddenly that Demicus caught him with his wing, flipping over and smashing into Efren's tail. The Imperial whirled around, ready to tell off the Pearlcatcher, but the whites of Terronwin's eyes showed brightly, wide with fear as he stared at the ground below. Following his gaze, Efren dropped several feet in the air, forgetting to flap his wings at the sight on the ground below. The Clan of the Rain's Song, along with the other dragon clans nearby, weren't the first to have to battle the mimics. The ground was littered with about two dozen corpses, dropped weapons and blood and other signs of battle everywhere. The mimics had clashed with a group of Longneck, and from the look of it, slaughtered them all. Efren angled his wings and circled slowly to the ground. There were no signs of mimics being there now. Demicus beat the old Imperial to the ground, bending down and sniffing at the bodies. "Use caution and be respectful," Efren warned. The clan's healer, the good Thana, hovered nearby, next to Terrowin, who still looked scared out of his wits. ----- I'm updating this several times so I don't lose everything if my internet cuts out, I'll put a notification down here when I'm finished

Well, our four scaly "friends", along with our two delightful nocturne siblings, eventually manage to navigate the clans inner chambers to where the source of the mimics are hidden away. Along their course, they had to subdue the clan's nocturne guards who had fallen under the influence of the mimics. Emotionally and physically battered, the six dragons trekked deeper within the ancient lair following the pull of the mimics their three nocturne friends felt. Only once they finally made it into the grand nesting chamber did they find the source of their problems. Three small nocturne eggs innocently sat before them, but behind them sat their biggest challenge. The clan's matriarch, a nocturne herself, being controlled by the mimics under the guise of eggs. Only by largest of the lot, Inca, forcibly holding the matriarch down after a vicious one-way battle did they manage to approach the eggs. With closed eyes they all unleashed their magic upon the eggs, unwilling to look at what was happening the form the mimics took to achieve their goal. Only once the shrill cries from the matriarch stopped did they open their eyes. Where eggs once were now only lay the husks of mimics. The influence the held over the clan was lifted, as well as that over Shadowsong. -------------------- Silence hissed out at the smaller nocturne's comment. "And what of us? Our clanmate's have been injured and some far worse by these mimics." Clawed hands gripped the well-worn staff that loosely hung off his shoulder. "My mentor... I must help her, much like you must help your own." "Calm yourself. There is no need to be hostile at a possible allies at a time like this, Silence." A yellow hued wildclaw soothed from the dark colored nocturnes side. Her hooded head looked over to the siblings. "I am most sorry for our friends hostility. He, and us all, have suffered some losses from this blight these creatures have caused." Silence let out a quiet 'tsk' as the bogsneak at his other side bumped him with his foreleg while shooting him a knowing glance. "Penne, if you and Enki are all healed enough we need to find these mimics and destroy them." Voidsong and Nightsong looked at the trio before them, then back at the large golden dragon beside them. "If we were to help you in destroying the mimics, will your healer heal me and my sister?" A unsure look was shot his way from said sister as she gripped her battered wing. Inca nodded his head at the duo. "Of course, Silence would be more than happy to heal our new friends." Spreading out his large imposing wings behind the tiny nocturnes, he pushed them towards his own nocturne friend. "Inst that right, Silence?" A annoyed glare was shot at him before the nocturne huffed, walking to the other two nocturnes and offering them his aid. Ah yes, If they can manage to save their clan mates this will be a very interesting night. --- "You dwell within the Carinstone Rest?" The blue nocturne chirped from Silence's side. Enki twisted his head around to look at the nocturne, a prideful grin spanning his face. "Yes, we reside within the ancient tunnel network that we carved into our own underground village." Lifting up his standard, the red bogsneak taped it on the carved entryway which caused lanterns to surge to life within the seemingly endless tunnel. "We must be careful, if what these two say are correct then our guards may be under control by those mimics." Penne laid a clawed hand on Inca's forearm, apprehension filling her as they entered the Rest. "It may be for the best that we knock them out completely so they don't harm themselves or others. I'm sorry that I have to say you must fight with the gift the Shadowbinder gave you as a birthright." The golden dragon dipped his head in agreement but said nothing as he lead the party into the torch-lit passageway. Silence rolled his eyes at the elder dragons as Enki lightly snorted. The wildclaw and guardian were both known to be dragons that held immense importance to the clan as heads of worship of the pantheon of eleven. They were also known to dislike violence in general, so their talk of actually fighting was both over-dramatic and still surprising. "You say your guards are nocturne as well, just how many of them are there?" came the soft voice of Voidsong next to Enki as they trailed behind the two clerics that somehow made their way in front of them. The grimace Enki gave him did nothing to settle his growing anxiety. "Over a dozen, one of them my own grandfather." The pupiless eyes of the bogsneak bore into his own blackened ones. "Are you afraid?" "Only for your clan and our mentor." --- The cavern around them spread out for what seemed as though miles of structures and settlements. Empty shopping stalls, quiet taverns, desolate streets is what greeted the six dragons as they passed the enchanted threshold into the clan's village. As the walked, fallen clansmen could be seen all around them under what seemed to be the same spell of the Gateway Guardian. The two nocturne siblings could only gaze around in sorrow as their four allies struggled to keep their emotions in check. Silence was the first to break the, well, silence that fell around them as they followed the trail of magic left by the mimics. "Will there be anything we can do to save them?" Nightsong looked at Silence and then gestured to her brother, "If we can find the mimics responsible for this and manage to destroy them, the magic veil they put on your clan will be lifted. Luckily, me and my brother learned how to track them from our mentor." The other nocturne nodded at his sisters answer. "The trail these ones left behind is strong. It shouldn't be much longer until we find where they are hiding." "Well then," The large guardian paused before choosing his next words. "If that is so, I pray that with where we are heading we find everyone safe." As the six of them followed the pull of the mimics the nocturne's felt towards a lone darkened tunnel, a dozen glowing eyes watched their every move as they got closer to their goal. --- "Grandmother..." Penne gripped Enki's shoulder, a slight hiss in her voice as she lowly spoke into his ear. "Right now she is not your Grandmother, not our matriarch. No, she is being controlled by those creatures who dare imitate that of our own young." Pulling free of her hold, he looked back at the hooded wildclaw. "She is still my Grandmother, even if she is being puppeted around by these little monsters. I'm not going to just forget about that to end this. There has to be another way." The large golden guardian took to the other side of the glaring bogsneak. "You forget that while she is your grandmother, she is to us our sister. We helped build this clan and we are not about to see its end." With that, the Nocturne clan matriarch whom hunched menacingly over top a clutch of three small and deceivingly innocent looking eggs let loose a ear splitting screech as the stones beneath the six dragons feet shot upwards. --- The once highly decorated nesting chamber was now a all out war zone. The metallic emerald scales of the Nocturne matriarch glowed against the fire that spread out around them as boulders violently flew through the air only to be met by a wall of shadow. "Penne, now's your chance to blind her!" Yelled out Inca as the shadow attack he and the three nocturnes used overcame the earth that was launched at them. The wildclaw slipped through the barrage and ran at their altered matriarch who was too distracted by the overwhelming darkness to notice her advance. With great might Penne spread out her wings and ushered a blast of light through the darkness and flame, enamoring the nocturne. As the rays settled the wildclaw stood before her friend and muttered softly "I'm sorry" . As quickly as the last rays faded, Inca appeared beside them and quickly held Xian to the ground while still stunned. His golden lips curled back as he barked out to her grandson who stood transfixed by the sight of his grandmothers thrashing body under his claws. "Enki, pull yourself together! This is our only chance to fix this!" His ripped hood allowed for his dark purple eyes to zero in on the eggs behind the nocturne. "Those eggs there are the cause of all of this these two say, and I can only pray that what we are about to do that is true." Nightsong and Voidsong gripped the side of the struggling bogsneak as Silence and Penne stood by them gazing at the nocturne eggs. The near black nocturne shook his head before quietly speaking under the agonized screams of the matriarch. "I'm a hundred percent certain that they are the mimics responsible for this. We need to destroy them now before they have a chance to influence anyone else." With that, the six dragons closed their eyes and let loose their attack. Seconds seemed like hours as they heard the explosion of magic before them echo out around them and the screams of the matriarch die down. Hesitantly, they all opened their eyes, uncertain of what would greet them. --- "How do you feel?" Black eyes glanced up at Silence as he stood over her healing the gashes running across her shoulder. With a shake of her head, she frowned up at him. "I feel better now, thank you Silence. Though, I believe my grandson is in more need for attention then me." "Xian, Enki will be just fine. You on the other hand need to heal." Penne supplied from her side. "For having been controlled by mimics, you need to rest." Nightsong nodded at her brothers comment. "Yes, there is no telling what kind of damage they have done to your magic and mental state. I can only hope that our mentor is as well off as you once we can locate her." "Your mentor... Shadowsong, isnt she?" "Yes, what all do you know?" Xian smoothed her aqua hair back as she stared at the siblings before giving a small smile. "She was here because she said that some mimics managed to find their way into our lair, but before she could find them and aid us our guards went wild and an explosion of magic erupted across the lair. I came here with her to protect our hatchlings. . ." Inca hummed out where she left off. "And that's when the mimics must have overtaken you and their mentor." "Well, if everyone is healed up enough we need to go find her and make sure we ended this madness" "Yes... Lets go."

Only once the shrill cries from the matriarch stopped did they open their eyes. Where eggs once were now only lay the husks of mimics. The influence the held over the clan was lifted, as well as that over Shadowsong.

Silence hissed out at the smaller nocturne's comment. "And what of us? Our clanmate's have been injured and some far worse by these mimics." Clawed hands gripped the well-worn staff that loosely hung off his shoulder. "My mentor... I must help her, much like you must help your own."

"Calm yourself. There is no need to be hostile at a possible allies at a time like this, Silence." A yellow hued wildclaw soothed from the dark colored nocturnes side. Her hooded head looked over to the siblings. "I am most sorry for our friends hostility. He, and us all, have suffered some losses from this blight these creatures have caused."

Silence let out a quiet 'tsk' as the bogsneak at his other side bumped him with his foreleg while shooting him a knowing glance. "Penne, if you and Enki are all healed enough we need to find these mimics and destroy them."

Voidsong and Nightsong looked at the trio before them, then back at the large golden dragon beside them.

"Inst that right, Silence?"

A annoyed glare was shot at him before the nocturne huffed, walking to the other two nocturnes and offering them his aid. Ah yes, If they can manage to save their clan mates this will be a very interesting night.

---

"You dwell within the Carinstone Rest?" The blue nocturne chirped from Silence's side.

I'm sorry that I have to say you must fight with the gift the Shadowbinder gave you as a birthright."

The golden dragon dipped his head in agreement but said nothing as he lead the party into the torch-lit passageway.

"Are you afraid?"

"Only for your clan and our mentor."

---

The cavern around them spread out for what seemed as though miles of structures and settlements.

"Will there be anything we can do to save them?"

Nightsong looked at Silence and then gestured to her brother, "If we can find the mimics responsible for this and manage to destroy them, the magic veil they put on your clan will be lifted. Luckily, me and my brother learned how to track them from our mentor."

The other nocturne nodded at his sisters answer. "The trail these ones left behind is strong. It shouldn't be much longer until we find where they are hiding."

"Well then," The large guardian paused before choosing his next words. "If that is so, I pray that with where we are heading we find everyone safe."

As the six of them followed the pull of the mimics the nocturne's felt towards a lone darkened tunnel, a dozen glowing eyes watched their every move as they got closer to their goal.

---

"Grandmother..."

Penne gripped Enki's shoulder, a slight hiss in her voice as she lowly spoke into his ear. "Right now she is not your Grandmother, not our matriarch. No, she is being controlled by those creatures who dare imitate that of our own young."

Pulling free of her hold, he looked back at the hooded wildclaw. "She is still my Grandmother, even if she is being puppeted around by these little monsters. I'm not going to just forget about that to end this. There has to be another way."

The large golden guardian took to the other side of the glaring bogsneak. "You forget that while she is your grandmother, she is to us our sister. We helped build this clan and we are not about to see its end."

With that, the Nocturne clan matriarch whom hunched menacingly over top a clutch of three small and deceivingly innocent looking eggs let loose a ear splitting screech as the stones beneath the six dragons feet shot upwards.

---

The once highly decorated nesting chamber was now a all out war zone.

"Those eggs there are the cause of all of this these two say, and I can only pray that what we are about to do that is true."

Nightsong and Voidsong gripped the side of the struggling bogsneak as Silence and Penne stood by them gazing at the nocturne eggs. The near black nocturne shook his head before quietly speaking under the agonized screams of the matriarch. "I'm a hundred percent certain that they are the mimics responsible for this. We need to destroy them now before they have a chance to influence anyone else."

With that, the six dragons closed their eyes and let loose their attack. Seconds seemed like hours as they heard the explosion of magic before them echo out around them and the screams of the matriarch die down.

Hesitantly, they all opened their eyes, uncertain of what would greet them.

---

"How do you feel?"

Black eyes glanced up at Silence as he stood over her healing the gashes running across her shoulder. With a shake of her head, she frowned up at him. "I feel better now, thank you Silence. Though, I believe my grandson is in more need for attention then me."

"Xian, Enki will be just fine. You on the other hand need to heal." Penne supplied from her side.

"For having been controlled by mimics, you need to rest." Nightsong nodded at her brothers comment. "Yes, there is no telling what kind of damage they have done to your magic and mental state. I can only hope that our mentor is as well off as you once we can locate her."

"Your mentor... Shadowsong, isnt she?"

"Yes, what all do you know?"

Xian smoothed her aqua hair back as she stared at the siblings before giving a small smile. "She was here because she said that some mimics managed to find their way into our lair, but before she could find them and aid us our guards went wild and an explosion of magic erupted across the lair. I came here with her to protect our hatchlings. . ."

Inca hummed out where she left off. "And that's when the mimics must have overtaken you and their mentor."

"Well, if everyone is healed up enough we need to go find her and make sure we ended this madness"

"Yes... Lets go."

I should have sensed it.” A bitter tone pinched his voice. “My sister was the one who noticed it first.” At the mention of his sibling, the nocturne pushed aside his self-pity and hurried over to the other group of dragons. An imperial as dark as a night sky blocked most of his view, but she stepped out of the way as soon as Voidsong approached. “Night,” he said, ducking low to press the tip of his nose against his sister. “Is it bad?” Nightsong shook her head, but it was the healer’s apprentice who answered. A wildclaw of vibrant green with eyes of blazing fire stood beside them, and it was from him that the warmth emanated. “She will be well. The injuries she sustained from the fall were minor, and easily healed away with magic.” His gaze flicked over Voidsong. “I will check you after.” “There is no need.” Voidsong forced himself to straighten, although his bones ached from the effort. “And we haven’t the time. We need to save Shadowsong—our mentor. Every delay only endangers her life further.” The imperial stepped forward. “Explain yourself,” she said. “I don’t understand.” She glanced at the last member of their miserable party, a lithe skydancer who radiated a faint bioluminescent glow. “We don’t understand.” Voidsong felt frustration bubble up inside him. Did they not see the importance of time? But then he felt Nightsong’s tail brush against him and he looked down into the deep purple eyes of his sister. The healer’s magic still pressed all around her, and reluctantly Voidsong conceded. They would wait for her to heal regardless; he could spare a breath to explain the situation. “My name is Voidsong,” he began. “This is my sister, Nightsong. We are apprentices, training to be Singers. Our mentor… Shadowsong. She is a Singer, and she was training us. Tonight was to be our last night.” “What is it you do?” The imperial furrowed a brow, head tilting curiously. “Do you understand these creatures of mimicry?” This time Nightsong answered. “The Singers fight them. Void and I have trained to sense their wicked magic, to chase them out of these lands. We knew your clan was under attack, and so Shadowsong led us here to help. It was worse than we expected.” “Yes.” The skydancer spoke then, voice light and ephemeral. “Those false hatchlings were not the only deception in our clan tonight.” “We underestimated their strength.” Voidsong lowered his head. “For that we are sorry.” The apology did not last long, however, and a moment later he was looking once more at all of them. “But we cannot linger. Thana is a powerful witch, the wielder of all these beasts. She seeks to claim souls, and if we do not recapture our lost ones, they will be trapped with her for all eternity.” The imperial’s eyes widened. “Our lost ones? You mean our captured clanmates might still have a chance?” “Yes.” Voidsong felt hope in the sudden fire in the imperial’s eyes. She was a large dragon, formidable in appearance. It would be a relief to have such a dragon working with them. “But it must be tonight, or else all is lost.” The skydancer turned her piercing gaze on the wildclaw. “Are you almost done, Forest?” The magic seemed to flicker around Nightsong. Its warmth extended far beyond the glow, and Voidsong felt it from where he was standing. He knew the healing was complete when the warmth receded and was replaced by the cool night air. “It is done,” Forest replied. He looked once more towards Voidsong, clearly itching to tend to the scrapes and bruises flowering on the exposed bits of the nocturne’s skin, but he did not press a second time. “Kaltrina, Elune. Will you stand with these young nocturnes?” The snapper spoke for the first time in a while, his voice taking on an authority that only older, experienced dragons could wield. “Will you stand with me?” The two straightened. “Yes, Commander.” Their voices sounded as one. “And you, Forest? You are a healer, but tonight you might need to injure.” The snapper sounded almost apologetic at this, but he looked at the wildclaw with the same amount of expectation as the other two. Forest flexed his claws. “I have not forgotten how to fight, Tsvetan. I will stand with you.” He glanced at Voidsong and dipped his head. “And you.” Emotion pressed at Voidsong’s heart. “Then we’d best get flying.” Keep reading

“As soon as we’re healed, we have to go,” Voidsong said. “If we don’t rescue Shadowsong before this long night ends, she’ll be Thana’s forever.”
