In far off Remnant, where magic is at its strongest and most rampant, Imperials and Pearlcatchers have been transformed into strange shapes. They appear more fox-like than dragon like, losing their longer toes in trade for paws and long whiskers in trade for, well, whiskers. Larger ears for Pearlcatchers seem to dwarf their heads and imperials grow shorter, more antler-like horns. They grow heavy coats of fur and more interestingly, long tails. These dragon-kitsune vary in size and nature but share aspects of both their heritage.
It is said that a kitsune dragon can both fly and retain their breath powers, while also possessing the abilities of their kitsune relatives. Transformation powers come easily and their will-o-wisp like familiars follow them everywhere. To the Yako, invisibility is added to their repertoire while Tenko and Shiro varieties prides themselves on their supernatural powers of healing and powerful spells. Nogitsune have an intense connection with nature, no matter where they go. It is powerful enough for them to call for aid even in the depths of the earth. Despite their individual powers, all variants can live an immensely long time and they are naturally very cunning and clever. While dragon-kitsune vary in temperament and preference, the majority of them enjoy jokes, food and a good prank.
Many kitsune-dragons stay with their own variants in carefully hidden caves, glades, and shrines. Others prefer solitude, like the Redeemed or Malicious. Nevertheless, the arrival of a kitsune is often heralded by their ghostly lights. If it is a Yako, you generally won't see them. The friendlier varieties will often appear before the visitor, if only to examine or cause trouble. These days though, fights with clans have caused them to become more curious about the realms of dragons. A kitsune may bring fortune and trouble in equal measure but they can be valuable allies!
Kitsune

Mascot - Shinobu owned by ZeroAerie
Lesser Kitsune
Pearlcatcher Breed
These Kitsune are still in the early stages of their life and power. They only have one to four tails and cannot be of the Tenko variety.
Mascot - Daemon owned by Hoefler
Pipe Fox
Spiral Breed
Cousins of the Kitsune, Pipe Foxes do not grow additional tails. Their gems are mainly for show as they are not bound to them like Kitsune are. They are welcome additions to temples for their intelligence and swiftness, and are often companions. Pipe Foxes come in all variants except for Malicious and Redeemed Yako and Tenko. (They are immune to the insecurities that plague Malicious Yako). In addition, if smoke isn't an option on that variant, it becomes an option for them.
Mascot - Crepe owned by EmeraldClocks
Fae Fox
Veilspun Breed
Cousins of the Pipe Foxes and near in size, these small sized foxes make up for their lack of size with an intuition unmatched. If there is danger or disruption in magic anywhere nearby them, the fae foxes are the first to know about it. They are also extremely gifted navigators and it is oft recommended to bring a fae fox when a traveler needs to get somewhere specific in Remnant. Teasing a fae fox about their size will surely end up with you being led astray! Fae Fox usually have one to seven tails.
Mascot - Midna owned by Aushi
Dire Kitsune
Gaoler Breed
Cousins of the Kitsune, Dire Kitsune lost their wings in exchange for bulk. The strongest physically of all the Kitsune and their cousins, Dire Kitsune typically form packs and stick together, unlike some solitary variants of Kitsune. They are very fast runners and can jump impressive heights. Since they are unable to fly, Dire Kitsune have developed the ability to create and move through portals. They are extremely fierce and hardy creatures. They lack the magical prowess of other Kitsune and make up for it with raw strength and size. Dire Kitsune have one to six tails.
Mascot - Ayumi owned by ClockworkEclipse
Tigerblood Kitsune
Obelisk Breed
Tigerblood Kitsune are the second newest of the Kitsune family. Being a medium sized cat-like fox, Tigerblood Kitsune are fiercely loyal and defensive of their homes. They are protectors and providers. Unlike the other Kitsune, Tigerblood kitsune have developed a more feline-like appearance and their extremely powerful forelegs and talons are to be feared. Tigerblood Kitsune have two to eight tails and they are either lion-like, cat-like or fox-like and varies by the individual.
Mascot - Strient owned by AquaArcs
Lumentail Kitsune
Aether Breed
Lumentail Kitsune hailed from the starry north after being discovered by Void Tenko. They are highly empathic and feel the emotions of those around them incredibly strongly. This makes them incredibly protective of their community members and allows them to aid others in new ways. The downside of this ability means they are also very susceptible to grief, pain and anguish, which can drive them to become 'malicious', though any actions are usually unintentional. Lumentail Kitsune have six legs and one to seven tails.
Mascot - Jiro owned by LeucisticCrow
Mirage Kitsune
Sandsurge Breed
Closer to being a true Kitsune then some of the other breeds, Mirage Kitsune are the newest arrivals to the isles of Remnant. They have settled in the deserts of the Western Islands for the most part, similar to their Sandsurge heritage. They have the ability to swim through the sands and their long dual fur crests down their back stand up straight when in a high emotional state, causing static to crackle around them. Mirage Kitsune have beads, like Dragon Kitsune, but due to their proficiency over controlling their own power, they can forgo having a tail entirely and be fine, so long as their bead isn't compromised. They tend to keep their tail count low around 0-5.
Mascot - Daybreak owned by QuietGhost
Orthus Kitsune
Aberration Breed
Unlike the other 'cousins' of the Kitsune, Orthus are considered lesser or Dragon Kitsune that have merged. How they merged is a mystery - some debate that's it's some remnant of Ashen curse in the bloodline or a genetic anomaly in twins. Some say that two separate Dragon Kitsune can become Orthus Kitsune in magical accidents far north. Either way, it is not uncommon for Orthus Kitsune to have two very different looking heads, including different eye colors, horn types, markings etc. Their tails may also be split entirely in size and shape. Their main bead is always two beads. If one bead is cracked or injured, that head will often go dormant. They typically have 2-9 tails.
Mascot - Drarr owned by shrimpcoluurs
Siren Kitsune
Fathom Breed
Siren Kitsune inhabit the rivers, lakes and seas of Remanent and can vary greatly in appearance. Shared traits include smaller ears, webbed paws and longer whiskers, as well as a double coat that repels water. Individual traits based on where they live include longer bodies, shorter legs and smaller size in rivers to larger size, fins and gills in deeper lakes and oceans. Siren Kitsune are very playful and stay in large skulks as they enjoy the company of others where they sing charmingly enough to sway a Night Shiro. They typically have 1-8 tails.
Mascot - Tatsuya owned by TheNightFury
Recommended Apparel
Dragon-Kitsune are not big into huge amounts of apparel. Due to lack of thumbs, weapons and other such dexterous items are unusable. Neither do Kitsunes' wear cumbersome armor though a leather or lacquered wood armor does not go amiss, so long as its light. Preference also varies by variant. Shiro, Night Shiro and Tenko prefer silks and jewelry. Yako, depending on their alignment, also enjoy silks but include things like long cloaks, frighting masks and vests. Nogitsune prefer more natural apparel such as furs or burlap.
Kitsune Favored Familiars
Kitsune like to keep other creatures around for companionship and protection. Of course, foxes are a universal favorite (because Kitsune can be vain like that) but other animals like birds, cats and stranger arcanic creatures like lamps and tricky cursed objects can be favorites as well. Here's a selection of their most favored although preferences vary from kitsune to kitsune.
