Never-ending WIP - Welcome aboard !
ahoy

Waves are crashing against the hull of the ship, leaving behind a taste of salt and a fresh spray on the deck. The planks are cracking, the ropes are creaking, and the wind blows loudly in the sails. It makes up for a strange melody, a call for adventure!

"Land in sight!" The lookout shouts. The crew activates instantly and covers up the ship's song with noise and enthusiasm. It hasn't always been this way: The small bunch used to be even smaller. But the adventures this ship went through had always been bigger than themselves.

The captain twirls a gold coin between his claws. This is exactly the life he's always been wanting to live. Adventure, gold... and a true family to share it with.

The group is tight-knit, like most pirate crews. They all have quite the personality, but they somehow manage to coordinate themselves well: they know each other like the back of their hands and know they can count on one another. It is an experience, however - No time to get bored!

Takamatsu and Farae started traveling together years ago, until they saved enough gold to buy a bigger ship and recruit other members aboard. Some other of their companions joined in different circumstances. All were looking for adventures, a new place to start, a family to belong to.

I. BEGINNINGS A calm night falls on Eretyras. The Marrow Run laps the river’s bank softly, a hush sound that fills the streets nearby. The moon lights up the port with a soft glow, without outshining the starry sky of the Abiding Boneyard. You can see a few storm clouds in the distance, but for now, the night is clear. An oasis in the middle of the desert falls asleep, and soon the shadow serpents would be out and filling the dunes with their rattle. At the back of the tavern, a black-scaled young man counts his coins. As usual, it’s not enough to his taste – but gold is gold, and he keeps close track of his treasures. He rolls a coin between his claws and admires its shine. What was this one’s story? Where was it before it was tipped to him this evening? Earlier today, a group of pirates showed up at the tavern. It wasn’t quite unusual, really. Eretyras, thanks to its key position between the Driftwood Drag, The Wyrmwound, and the Sea of Thousand Currents, was a well-known pirate spot. In fact, once you accept that you are serving criminals, it’s not that bad. They have tons of stories to tell. Bonds like no other, chests full of treasures in their hold, and lives filled with adventures. And so, a group of pirates showed up earlier. He served them, as usual, listened to their stories, and chatted with them during service. He answered their jokes with flair – he’s always been the impudent kind. It’s not often that pirates, of all people, get mad at others for playing along. In fact, they seemed pleased. Took a liking to him, perhaps. They tipped him fairly. Before they left, one of the crew members came up to him. “Y’know, we could use another sailor aboard.” And now, here he is. Thinking. Why did he refuse? What stopped him? This life, it’s been calling him for a while. Every time he watches the river, the young man hears its calling. Every time a new ship moors at the port, he looks through the tavern’s window. And every time an occasion occurs… He doesn’t grab it. With many good reasons in mind, admittedly: he doesn’t know how to navigate. He has a full-time job, that he enjoys, here in the outpost. Finally… he has a clean criminal record. Well. That might be a detail, but it isn’t exactly. The Skydancer ruffles his feathers, puts away his belongings and leaves the tavern. He locks the door behind him and walks toward the port: he needs to see the water. He walks down the port, listening to the water lapping the bank and to the Marrow Run’s currents growling further into the river. The storm clouds are slowly but surely getting closer, along with a low rumble in the distance. For a moment, as he looks at the moving surface of the waterway, the elements are the only things to be heard. But their tranquil melody fades into the night as a different kind of noise emerges. The bartender is intrigued, pulled away from his dreamy thinking. It sounds like a fight. He follows the sound of people growling, and irons crossing. A laugh is heard – cut short by a loud huff. The dragon picks his pace up and takes a turn after a cargo on the deck, obscuring his vision. A young Obelisk is standing on the port. He is wearing blue breeches and a navy bandana, a few sets of jewels, and a paper fan tied to his blue, sturdy wings. The man is engaged against no less than three other dragons. “Hey there. Three against one? Is that sounding like fair game to you guys?” Chuckles the Skydancer with a bolt of energy. Ah – things are getting interesting. The Obelisk beams a bright, toothy smile at him. “Hoy mate! Care to lend a hand to a friend in the making?” As he finishes his sentence, he hands the wooden club he was holding to his feathery ally and punches one of his opponents with his bare hand and a monumental strength. The bartender grabs the club and hits another of their foe with swiftness. He doesn’t know this Ice dragon he’s fighting along with – but he does know the other camp certainly doesn’t need his help, judging how fair the match seems to be. He’s here to bring balance, not victory. His brown eyes shine as he avoids a sword and kicks his foe in the stomach. The Obelisk shouts happily. “Man, you sure know how to fight!” He himself grabs one of the opponents and throws him at the third one. “Are you an adventurer or something?” The Skydancer avoids yet another hit, bounces on his feet, and uses the club as a shield when one of the attackers attempts to cut off one of his arms. He huffs loudly and pushes him away. “Not quite. I’ve had my share of travels, but I’m working as a bartender now.” He laughs a bit, breathing loudly in the heat of the fight. “Impressive!” The other petrifies himself to avoid a lethal hit, becoming a statue as Obelisks know how to do so well. He comes back to flesh and life, giving another punch to his opponent. To be fair, they know how to fight as well. They’re most likely not simple citizens, but rather either pirates or organized criminals. “Tell me, my friend. Why are these honest guys so mad at you?” More used to serve drinks than hits, the feathery dragon starts to run out of breath, but hangs onto the fight, as the two acolytes shift places and keep battling as if they’ve always been doing it together. “I kissed someone’s son that I shouldn’t have. And I might have stolen some cash along. They didn’t like it.” He laughs loudly but is running out of breath as well. “Hang in there, we’re not doing too bad!” Answered the Skydancer, trying to galvanize him. He knocks out one of the guys with his weapon, to which the Obelisk shouted in utmost joy. Suddenly, four other dragons run toward the battlefield. The two partners’ smiles melt into a scared pout. The storm’s rumble gets stronger, and the icy young man looks at the earthy one. “Okay, that’s enough. Drop the club, RUN!” They start running back to the port, as fast as their legs can carry them. “Can we fly to the city center?” Asked the Obelisk. “They will find us back in no time! And I feel like we might get killed!” The chunky dragon stops talking for a few seconds, thinking as hard as he can while running for his life. The Skydancer is still following him. “Let’s steal a boat!” Time stops for a second. The black-scaled dragon looks at the Obelisk. The wind is blowing. “I can’t sail.” The other smiles at him. “But I can!” They both take flight. They rush toward a small ship at the other end of the port. The sailor crashes aboard and starts setting sails. The bartender… Maybe he wouldn’t stay a bartender for much longer. He unhitches the boat from the deck at the speed of light. He feels like he’s always done this, somehow. Adrenaline kicks in as the six remaining dragons close in on them, their wing flapping loudly above the port. The wind blows into the sails right as the storm explodes. Thunder cracks and hits the deck. The boat jolts into the Marrow Run under the pouring rain, leaving Eretyras and toward the Sea of Thousand Currents. The two dragons sail the ship, under the Obelisk’s direction, rain soaking their wings. The Skydancer is holding tight onto the helm, following the other’s instructions when needed. “You look like you’ve done this forever.” He chuckles. “I feel like I have. But that’s no doubt because you’re a great navigator.” His claws stroke the helm softly as he feels the vibrations of the hull against the crashing waves. Their adrenaline level is falling back down. They look at each other. “My name is Takamatsu. How about yours?” The feathery fellow asks. “I’m Farae.” Answered the second. He looked fierce, with his soaked mane undulating in the stormy air. Yet, despite his confidence, he looked sorry. Sorry for this stranger he embarked on an aimless adventure, for this stranger he made leave his home. “’ Hope I didn’t ruin your life, Tak’. Now you’re a mafia fugitive, sailing the Marrow Run with a lone sailor in trouble!” He lets out a laugh, but it’s a bit sour, a bit nervous. The other looks at him in detail while holding the helm. He feels the wind and the rain against the leather of his wings. He feels the spray against his face. More importantly, he feels his pouch full of coins on his belt. Did he like his life back at the outpost? Yes. Definitely. But did it feel fulfilling? Not really. Did it feel like he was missing something he longed for? Very much so. Would he have left soon enough anyway?... Probably. He turns around to face his companion. “… No. That works with me, Farae. Thank you.” The storm hollers above their head. Eretyras is long gone. The two pirates look at each other and start laughing uncontrollably. They let out a roar, and a prayer for their adventures to come.

I. BEGINNINGS

A calm night falls on Eretyras.

“Y’know, we could use another sailor aboard.”

And now, here he is.

Thank you.”

The storm hollers above their head. Eretyras is long gone. The two pirates look at each other and start laughing uncontrollably. They let out a roar, and a prayer for their adventures to come.

A duo isn’t enough anymore *THUMP* Farae slammed another pint on the table for Takamatsu. He cracked his fan in a fit of exuberance and grinned before he sat next to his companion. “So, how ‘you gonna handle this, Tak?” The tavern was boiling with activity and noise. Sailors back from a hard day at work were back on shore in Lanternlea Port, drinking and dancing together, telling their tales, fighting, and shouting. A lively atmosphere, just like Takamatsu liked it. He took a sip of his drink with a sly smile. “We’re going to meet them here. We chat and we see how we feel about them.” The Obelisk nodded, looking eager. “A vibe check. Sounds great. And when we selected our crew, I bring them to our new baby.” The two dragons looked at each other in the eyes with a smug smile, proud of each other. They started their adventure on a small stolen boat. Just the two of them on the Marrow Run, in the storm, running away from an angry gang. They traveled all the way back to the sea, avoiding the bonebars that could have torn apart their hull. They took a few stops… Stole some more things. They reached the Sea of Thousand Currents with some more coins in their tiny cabin. They carried on their journey, earning some more experience and memories. It’s been over a year, a brilliant duo with pockets filling with gold and tales to tell. So much gold, in fact, that the two partners managed to invest into… a tiny bit of a bigger ship. They left their sloop behind, buying a small frigate and looking for even greater adventures. The Glorious Kismet was moored at the port and ready to welcome its future crew aboard. And the future crew would be recruited tonight. It was exciting but stressful: the duo had been working so great so far, wouldn’t adding other people to this perfect equation cause trouble? Yet, they both discussed it at length, and agreed to try it. They were both willing to take that bet, to risk it all for bigger adventures… and even more treasures! A small group of dragons started to form next to their tables. The Skydancer glanced at his navigator with a thin smile. He grabbed his glass and spoke up loud and clear. “Let us begin!” First in line was an imposing Ridgeback. She was carrying a few tools and wearing flowers tucked in her bandana and bandolier. Her blue eyes were partially hidden behind her shades. Takamatsu inspected her. “So, you want to sail with us?” She nodded. “Precisely.” He took a sip from his glass. “And why should we let you?” She lowered her glasses, staring at him deep in the eyes. “Because I’m a carpenter, and whatever ship you have won’t repair itself on its own.” She was softspoken but strangely charismatic. She also had fantastic poise. Farae glanced at Takamatsu. “She’s got a point.” He said. “She sure does” answered the feathered fellow. The Skydancer looked back at the woodworker. They said eyes were the window to the soul, and hers were oceans. Deep diving into them, he saw mostly determination… And the darkness below the surface. Hard to read. His antennae tingled softly. “Next question. Why do you want to come with us?” She looked back at him, almost in a defiant way, but spoke up in a very calm and soft voice as she did before. “I want stories to carve into my bones.” Farae cracked his fan with a stupefied face, in awe. “Girl! Words.” Both the captain and the sailing master spoke at the same time, loud and clear. “You’re in.” Next in line, a Pearlcatcher approached. She looked quite disdainful, chewing on a twig with aloofness. Takamatsu opened his mouth, but she cut him short – “I’m here for the money.” He closed his mouth and paused for a moment. “There will be a lot of it I’m sure. But I take half each time.” She rolled her eyes and left without adding anything. Farae made a face. “Oops.” He gave a friendly tap on his friend’s shoulder. “She liked gold more than you. It couldn’t have worked.” The captain shrugged, and carried on. A tiny Fae reached the table. Once again, the captain gave him a good look. “Greet’. You know why you’re here: tell me why I should take you aboard now.” The small man slammed his little fist on the table. “I’m an experienced sailor, seasoned fighter, I can tie a hundred knots in minutes, you need someone like me to tag along.” Farae nodded, taking mental notes. Takamatsu stared at the candidate, twitching his antennae a bit. “Convincing so far. Why aren’t you already in a crew if you’re such an asset, if I may ask?” The Fae’s jaw dropped. It took a second, but he puffed his cheek. “I’ve had, huh, some stories when I was drunk.” The Obelisk broke his wrist and looked at the tiny man fondly. “Don’t we all?” The Skydancer, on the other hand, didn’t look convinced. “Stories about?...” His interlocutor hummed. “Fights. See sir, I’m not a violent person, but a guy got on my nerves real bad. I also didn’t like all of his…“ He glanced at Farae. “Mannerism. I like a real man who respects himself.” The Obelisk lost his smile for a second, then traded his pout for a cynical grin. Takamatsu pointed at the door. “Sorry, we can’t have you. We’re looking for people who are preferably nice and open-minded. Also, masculinity so fragile it could just fly away with the first gust just won’t do it.” The two companions looked at each other with a pout as the small fellow left grumbling. He looked just like he could start a fight, but Farae was, it seems, too impressive and massive to allow that. They lit back up and focused back as an earthy-toned guardian reached out. “Hey darlings! I heard you’re looking for a crew?” The duo nodded. “Why do you want to join?” Asked the Skydancer. “I’ve always dreamed of sailing.” The man answered. The feathery dragon’s antennae twitched as he listened. “The sea spray on your wings, the sunset view from the top of the mast… Finding a family in your crew.” He sighed dreamily and let out a low chuckle. Takamatsu’s antennae kept twitching. “For someone who never really had a home on land… It’s a charming perspective.” Farae nodded, inspecting the large man. “I’m sold. He has a great vibe.” He said. “He’s lying.” Stated the Skydancer, confident in his energy-reading capacities. “But I’m sold as well. Welcome aboard.” He paused briefly, as his partner stared at him with an impressed expression. “Out of curiosity, what is the real motivation?” The Guardian blinked, surprised, but ended up laughing loudly. “I’m looking for something new, and a few coins.” He winked. “I’m a simple man.” The next one was a Mirror. The man sat at the table, and immediately asked: “Where are the other recruits?” Farae cracked his fan and looked aside with a judgmental face. That man was proud, but not even in a fun way. Takamatsu pointed at the Ridgeback and the Guardian a bit further. The Mirror’s smile disappeared. “… Only one?” The Skydancer raised his eyebrow. “Two, in fact.” The other blinked with all four of his eyes. “Ah, you shouldn’t sail with a girl. That’ll only make 2 once I’m in. We can’t keep her, duh.” The feathery dragon looked at the other with poise and disdain. Farae on the other hand grinned. “A woman and a gay man aboard. Not sure you’d like it, but that’s no big deal because you’re out anyway.” He pointed at the door with his friend nodding calmly in agreement. They kept meeting sailors, experienced or not, chatting, and declining candidate. In fact, Takamatsu didn’t find that little spark, that small flame in their heart, so often. He also wanted to make sure his favorites were also Farae’s. A difficult exercise, with many factors independent of their will. “Man. Some people here are narrow-minded.” Takamatsu nodded. ”We’ve met only a few weirdos, to be fair, but I fully agree it’s too many.” The two partners looked around, their eyes landing on a tan Imperial wearing golden wing jewels. She was young and walked toward them as soon as she caught their eyes. She had quite the gait, she looked overly confident and proud. “So… Are you one of the potential candidates?” Asked the Skydancer. “You bet!” She simpered, but in a cocky way. “Are you still looking?” They both nodded. “Good! Because I think I might be a fantastic addition to your crew!” The two pirates glanced at each other, and focused back on the young woman quickly. Takamatsu opened his mouth, but she didn’t notice and kept talking. “To be fair, I’ve never sailed much, but I do have some experience and I can do tons of useful stuff. Lockpicking, sword-fighting, fashion-roasting…” Someone’s antennae twitched. “I also handle booze well, let me tell you! I’ve been told it can be important on the sea.” She kept going, unstoppable. “Honestly I just hope the others from the crew are at least somewhat as competent and interesting at me, I don’t want to hang with losers and-“ Farae lifted his paw in a stopping gesture. “Girl, breathe.” She stared at him, zoned out for a second trying to find something to say. Before she found anything, Takamatsu jumped back on the wagon. “Why would you like to join us?” He stared at her deeply, analyzing each and every shiver and twitch of her face. As he deep-dived into her soul, he could feel her losing composure. She didn’t seem used to the lack of excessive reaction, she didn’t seem used to poised talk and steadiness. On his end, the Obelisk inspected her as well, and the extreme attention from these two men seemed to break her play down. She stuttered, and managed to spit one single sentence: “I… I like traveling…“ they kept staring at her, not in a mean way (almost tenderly in fact), but letting their natural auras ooze and sink into her mind. Takamatsu’s antennae tingled as he asked again, a bit differently and in a softer voice. “Would you like to join us?” It was not recruitment anymore, but rather a genuine question. The flustered young woman nodded silently, impressed, and visibly touched in a strange way. They gave the chatty Imperial some time to join the others. The tavern was a lot calmer in the late night – the last drunkards were pushed further into the room. One last person was standing nearby. The captain inspected her, and for the first time in a very long while… He smiled faintly at someone else than Farae. The black Guardian approached. She was a young woman as well, but very different from the Imperial girl. “Hello.” She adjusted her bandana. “Hey!” Greeted Farae. “Straight to the point… Why should we take you aboard?” The Skydancer observed her reaction. She grinned. “Let me come aboard and find out.” Farae cracked his fan. “Interesting. And why do you want to join us?” The captain asked. She stared at him dead in the eyes, waiting to find the exact words she needed to convey her feelings. “I want to find my truth in my own way.” The navigator snapped his fingers with enthusiasm, applauding quietly that way. “Do you think you’ll find your truth on the ocean?” Asked Takamatsu. “I’ll have to get a look if I want to know.” She answered firmly. The Skydancer glanced at his companion, who nodded with a smile and spoke up. “Very cool! You have an excellent vibe. Welcome aboard!” “Did you guys make each other’s acquaintance yet?” Asked the black-and-gold sailor as he and Farae joined the four fellows standing outside with their glasses. “Is it only the four of us?” Asked the Imperial, looking suspicious. Takamatsu looked at her in a theatrical, thoughtful way, as if he was thinking hard. After a few seconds, he stopped his play. “Yes. Only the best.” She seemed to like this answer, her whiskers shivering in delight as she pouted smugly. “Most important: where’s the ship?” Asked the Ridgeback. Farae pointed at her with a huge smile. “You! What’s your name?” “Mae.” He clapped. “I’m glad you asked, Mae. Everyone follow me to the port, thank you.” He started walking away, making sure the others were following. Takamatsu checked as well, going after the Obelisk and starting to give out a few pieces of information. “Great, before we reach our new home: let us introduce ourselves. I’m Takamatsu, and I’ll be your captain for however long you stay with us.” The navigator interrupted him. “May it last a while, and may you not get skinned by a sea monster.” Everyone listened to them closely. “Farae is the only person allowed to call me ‘Tak’, which leads me to our stunning Navigator and Firstmate: Farae of the Southern Icefield.” The Obelisk laughed and eventually stopped walking as they reached the docks. He brought the little group to a brand-new frigate. The hull was a dark wooden color with a red lining, waves lapping at it softly in the calm night. The Skydancer admired it once again, feeling the pride growing in his chest and carrying him forth like a strong wind under his wings. He took a few seconds to let everyone carve this moment into their skulls. “This is your new home.” He turned around to face the young crew. “Now you give me your names, I write them down in my logbook, and you’re officially a member of the Glorious Kismet’s crew.” No one spoke up, but everyone shivered. His calm and husky voice made this moment feel almost solemn. He was imposing, he forced respect without even trying. The silence settled, and everyone waited for the captain’s next words. He gave a good look at them all and lift his chin with satisfaction when the young Guardian walked forth. “I’m Kara. You can count me in.” She broke the spell Takamatsu seemed to have cast on them when she spoke up. The alluring Ridgeback followed and stepped forward as well. “As I said earlier, I’m Mae. Thanks for having me.” She herself was followed by the young Imperial. “My name is Bayvri, in for the journey as well!” Finally, the bigger Guardian stepped forward as well with a smile. “And last but not least, I’m Yachel! You won’t be disappointed to have me; my personality is simply incredible.” Everyone chuckled. Takamatsu glanced at Farae with a satisfied look before he looked back at his crew. “Rest well for the night. We set sails tomorrow at dawn – and we won’t be back in Lanterlea before a while.”

II. A duo isn’t enough anymore

You won’t be disappointed to have me; my personality is simply incredible.”

Everyone chuckled. Takamatsu glanced at Farae with a satisfied look before he looked back at his crew. “Rest well for the night. We set sails tomorrow at dawn – and we won’t be back in Lanterlea before a while.”

What’s a crew without a code “This one’s full of pretty fabric.” Mae, the Carpenter, tilts her head up to check out the crate Farae just opened. She inspects its content and carefully runs her claws on the fine textile. “It’s quite good quality. I’d like to keep it.” “Go ahead, unless someone wants some as well.” Answers her captain, as he counts golden coins from another crate. He digs his claws into the sea of gold, inspects each piece with great focus, and twists every medallion between his fingers. As he sorts out every coin, he stacks them in parts for the crew. Bayvri, excited and cocky as usual, looks at each chest and crate and tries to save her favorite goods from today’s loot. Meanwhile, Kara and Yachel sit quite calmly: They admire Farae punching open sealed boxes and gaze upon Takamatsu prepping their salary in the most unequal manner. The young, black Guardian finally clears her throat. “Say, Captain…” The Skydancer doesn’t flinch, appreciating his newly acquired gold. “Yes, Kara ?” She waits for a few seconds, picking her words carefully. “Well, first of all, I’d like to congratulate the whole crew. We’ve never looted so much in one go before, and that whole bunch of stuff is our biggest treasure so far. So, bravo to our small team for bringing home such big riches! The Glorious Kismet’s Crew is onto some new, much bigger adventures! Filled with even more gold and goods!” Everyone shouts happily in answer, claps loudly, hugs, and elbows their crewmates in a congratulating way. Takamatsu lifts his head up to look at Kara with a sly smile. She was a great leader in fact, despite her young age, and she surely didn’t speak up for the sole purpose of hyping up the crew. “I’m glad you mention it. We can indeed be proud of ourselves. What we accomplished today was worthy of the best pirate crews of Sornieth’s history! Our small team has nothing to envy to bigger crews. And as your crewmate Kara rightfully said… The roads we sail are carrying us toward even bigger riches, adventures, and even more gold! First round’s on me tonight, crew!” More enthusiastic shouts. As the whole crew celebrates, the Captain keep staring at Kara dead in the eyes. “But I know you have something else to add, dear. So please, go forth.” The young woman nods, not losing her poise as she tries to figure out her Captain’s tone and intention. She stares back, trying to resist the urge to glance at Farae for support. To be fair, as intimidating as the situation was, she didn’t think Takamatsu was ill-intentioned, or would get that angry at all. She simply never had confronted him about anything before. “How are we splitting our parts from this loot, Captain? I feel like picking what we want isn’t a good way… And I feel like you’re not parting the treasure equally either. So what’s the rule?” Everyone lowers their voice and observes the Captain and their young crewmate. The black-and-gold Skydancer glances at his first mate calmly. The Obelisk immediately stops tearing apart wooden crates and sorting treasures, smiles at his team, and speaks up. He’s putting his all in it, his whole charismatic aura, his whole firmness, but also his whole kindness and sincerity. “First of all, crew! Know every single of you will be paid. Today, and every other day we bring fancy things back home! Because this is teamwork, and we all played our parts.” He looks at everyone, right in the eyes, with pride and poise. “Mae and Yachel! The way you came alongside in that merchant ship was stunning. You guys are already real professionals, let me tell you. Kara, you fought incredibly well and was a great support for Tak’. You both really stole the spotlight on the deck, didn’t you? And Bayvri, we could never have brought back the goods if it wasn’t for your skills opening each and every door, accessing each and every room.” He pauses and keeps looking at them all. Takamatsu speaks up again, standing fiercely on the deck. “However. Kara is right. We’ve never had this many riches to share before! We’re onto big games now, and our usual ways won’t work anymore.” Everyone looks at each other, waiting. The tension - or is it excitement? - grows. The Captain grins. He gazes upon his crafty crew, then turns to his first mate. “I think it’s ‘bout time we write ourselves our code. What do yall say?” The whole crew roars with enthusiasm. They’re indeed onto big games now. Writing a code was a big deal. The document was a contract binding all crew members to the Captain and most importantly: to the rest of the Crew with a capital “C”. Every sailor was to sign it, and they would surely hang it on the captain’s cabin door. Farae arrives at the open deck again, straight out of said cabin. He holds a sheet of parchment paper in his big paws, as well as a feather and bottle of ink. He hands the latter to Takamatsu, and stands straight in front of the crew. The Obelisk was most experienced with sailing and piracy, and had the most authority aboard right after the Captain. He would lead the discussions to create the code, but Takamatsu was to write it. The black and gold Skydancer prepares the feather and ink, has Yachel pushes a barrel in the center of the group to be used as a table. Once the parchment is secured flat on the top, the Captain sets the first letters atop the sheet. “The Glorious Kismet’s Code of Conduct.” Takamatsu’s writing was elegant, with slick calligraphy letters and tasteful loops. The feather’s tip slides against the paper with a satisfying and subtle scratching sound. “For our first article,” he says “I want to make sure each and everyone of you feels considered aboard our ship. Because the Captain and the Firstmate have authority, does not mean you shouldn’t be allowed to speak your mind, or join in decision-process.” Farae speaks up. “What we’re gonna do is, we’ll make it a rule to vote when necessary. The Captain decides if there’s a tie, but whenever something big’s happenin’, we all take the time to discuss it and vote.” A suitable first article. Everyone nods. “If that work with yall, I’d like to make the vote mandatory unless you’re excused. You can vote on a blank option because you don’t know, but you have to be here and take part.” Farae was quite thoughtful so far, and all the more convincing because of it. Takamatsu glances at his crew, and writes up the first item of the code. “Next in line,” he says “treasure share.” Kara perks up: she was the one who brought it up after all. Yachel focuses as well: he made it clear joining that he was looking for money, among other things… And remuneration was fundamental! “Usually, the Captain and the Firstmate take Half of the loot. I suggest we lower it to a Third.” Farae glances at Tak’, who nods softly. The splitting pains him (the more gold for him, the better!), but it is quite fair, he’s still a big winner in it, and it should please the crew. A good lever to earn their trust and loyalty. A necessary sacrifice to show them they’re important mates and not numbers. “So we just split the other two Third between us?” asks Mae, the Carpenter. The imposing lady doesn’t seem convinced, but not aggressive about it either. “Well” answers Farae. “Not quite. Some of you all hold key roles aboard. They should get remuneration accordingly.” He continues. “The Captain and the First mate get one Third to share. The Carpenter, the Navigator, the Medic get the second Third to share. The last Third goes to every other crew mates.” Yachel chuckles lowly. The big Guardian looks genuinely amused. “Do we even have a Medic, Farae?” The Obelisk grins. “I’m glad you asked! You’ll make a fine one methink. I saw you taking care of our friend Bayvri’s splintered hand last time.” Takamatsu laughs softly, and writes down that second item. It is a very much sub-optimal rule as things currently are: One Third for Farae and him, one Third for Mae and Yachel, and one Third for Kara and Bayvri… Everyone was getting strictly the same amount of gold. Which upset him. He would probably convinces Farae to give him more of his share… The Obelisk already knew it, judging by the way he was looking at his old friend with a sorry and amused face. He did the math already. “How ‘bout other goods?” Yachel asks, followed by young Kara. “Yeah, gold is one thing, but what about other loots? And other resources on the ship as well!” “Loot is loot. Why would ya change the general rule?” growls Bayvri “Are you greedy or something?” Kara straightens up with a frown, but is stopped by Takamatsu clicking his tongue. “I’m the greediest one out there, Bayvri. And I’ll gladly abuse of my power to have you give me parts of your share if you speak that way of the crew.” She closes her snout and looks away from Kara with a pout. Farae gives a friendly bump on Kara’s broad shoulder. She tenses up, but doesn’t flinch. “And to be fair, Kara’s right about other resources on the ship. No weird way of sharing fresh provisions and drinks. Everyone who signed the code can have as much as the others. We’re looking for a healthy crew!” The captain nods and scribes down another item, speaking up in the meantime. “Equal title to provisions and beverages for all. Unless scarcity. We’ll vote strategies together at that time.” The scratching of the feathers on the parchment and the chatty noises of conversation keep flowing for a while more. At some point, Mae cracks open a barrel of Prickleaf Rum. The exercise is a fun one, a nice way for the crew to discuss things and bond. The crashing of the waves against the hull slows down as the sea sets. The laughter's remain, the half-empty bottle of ink is finally sealed back, and the inscribed parchment is spread out for everyone to read. “The Glorious Kismet’s Code of Conduct. I. Every crew mate has a vote in affairs of moment; voting being not a right but a duty, unless excused. As the piece of inscribed parchment becomes an official key-stone of their life onboard, the black and gold Skydancer pins it against the captain’s cabin door. As they all (drunkenly) look at the document one more time, the night sets. The soft darkness of the night sky and the fresh sea spray against their wings are witnesses to the new milestone of their company. “Well then. Can’t wait to see who gets marooned first!” They all laugh crudely at Yachel’s remark, and walk back to their opened Rum barrel to end the day in cheers and smiles.

“This one’s full of pretty fabric.” Mae, the Carpenter, tilts her head up to check out the crate Farae just opened. She inspects its content and carefully runs her claws on the fine textile. “It’s quite good quality. I’d like to keep it.”
