The last thing he remembered was going to sleep among them, and then he woke up and he was in the middle of a barren terrain with a guardian hatchling treading on him.
Lunastus didn't know how she had gotten there, either. She was too young to understand whatever force had pulled the two of them together, so together they began to wander, searching for - they didn't even know what. Answers, maybe.
They crossed paths with many other dragons as they travelled, but Nako had grown wary of others. How could he know if he could trust them? After all, he had trusted the clan of tears, and they had left him...
Only Lunastus was permitted to stay by Nako's side, because she was still so young and needed someone to be responsible for her. And of course, he didn't want to be alone, though he'd never admit it. He began to wonder if his clan had left him because he had been avoiding his duties as leader. If so, they would have had every right.
And so Lunastus became Nako's redemption, and the small fae was determined that they would continue to wander, never settling, until he felt himself worthy of a home once more.
He had meant for the two of them to remain alone, but that had been before he encountered the Ice twins -- cast out and abandoned by their own kind, he saw himself in them. Himself, and the clan that he had once called home, a family of misfits with no place else to go. How could he not offer them sanctuary?
It did not matter that they seemed to distrust him and Luna, or that they gave off an air of cold artifice. They strayed only as far as their pride demanded, and returned to the shelter of the guardian's protection when danger reared its head. Due to this strange coupling, Luna never quite gained the confidence and surety that a dragon of her breed ought to have, but the longer she travelled with Nako, the stronger the bond between them grew, until the guardian was certain that her place is by his side, and nowhere else. Without either of them realising it, he had become her charge.

Espero stopped, balancing lightly on his toes as he scratched at his cheek and looked at Iglaak standing before him. The ever-present gargoyle of the clan was scowling as usual, his gaze focused on the slowly lumbering form that was moving up behind Espero. The gleaming raptor smiled innocently, his hands rising in a placating gesture. "What do you mean?"
"Do not be coy, Espero. You are not nearly as good at it as Baku is. Why is that enormous guardian with you and what exactly is wrong with it?"
"Nothing is wrong with him, Iggy-"
"Do not call me that."
"Look, he was being raffled off. He's an old guy with no where to go, and he knows how to fight. I reckon we could let him stay with us."
"Not a chance."
"You ain't the boss here, you know. Even if you wanna be. If Nako says he can stay, then he stays."
"And [i]has[/i] Nako said he can stay?"
Espero shifted from foot to foot. "Well, I haven't exactly asked him yet."
Hyde's large steps finally brought him even with the much smaller dragons and he leaned his considerable bulk down, bones straining as he did so, until he could talk with them without them having to shout back. "If my being here is going to be an issue..."
"What? no no, it'll be okay, I promise. Nako doesn't mind new dragons coming around, especially if they're going to be useful. It's just Iggy here-"

"-Who's a bit of an overprotective grump. He'll accept you soon enough. We can't leave you looking like you are, though. What would our guests think if they saw you in that state?
"You wait here with Iggy-" A low growling could be heard coming from the throat of the gargoyle as he narrowed his eyes at the gleaming raptor "-and I'll go get permission from the boss, and then drag Kiburi out here. We'll give you a whole new look and get those scales shining and those muscles working again. When we're done with you, you won't even recognize yourself!"
Espero ran off towards the tavern, his tail raised behind him. It swished through the air like a rudder, giving balance to his steps. The guardian and the gargoyle watched him go and then Iglaak turned a keen eye on the newcomer, finding the old dragon studying him calmly in return.
"Do you not have a charge you should be taking care of?"
"I have never felt the call towards a charge, and I wonder if I ever will. Perhaps my fate lies elsewhere. I meant what I said, though. If I'm going to be a burden here, I will move on."
"No, you have a touch of something about you that I cannot quite grasp, but I believe that you may have a place here. Do not mind what I spoke to Espero. That raptor has no common sense, though I keep trying to teach it to him. Stay and be welcome among us. As long as you bring us no harm, you have a place here. Break the rules, and we will take every penalty from your hide."
Hyde snorted, amused at the gargoyle. That one so much younger and smaller than he sought to threaten him was not a new experience to one as old as he was, but somehow, he did not think this clan was like any other he had come across in his long life. It would be interesting to see how things would play out from this moment onwards...

[font=candara]It was the day that the tavern would open its doors to the public for the first time. With such a momentous event, one would expect that the clan of tears would be in an uproar, racing around doing their best to complete last minute tasks so that everything was just the way it was meant to be.
However, anyone who expected that did not know the clan of tears well at all. When the opening time came around, one lone Wildclaw heaved himself up from where he had been lazing on the floor of the tavern, trudged his way over to the front - being careful not to step on any of his clanmates littered about - and dragged the heavy door open, squinting against the bright sunlight that suddenly flooded the fur-draped entryway. He then turned, stepped lightly back over his clanmates, returned to his patch of floor, and sank happily back into slumber.
And that was that. It wasn't a momentous occasion by anyone's standards. At least, not until the first client stepped through the threshold...
"Oi oi, what's this then? A tavern in the middle of the desert? did'ja all go and die in here or wha? I know it's hot - I thought maybe you'd have something to drink, but now I dunno if I want to."
The voice was loud, and altogether quite unwelcome. It was Oscar who woke first, being the lightest sleeper. She took one look at the newcomer, scrambled backwards until she fell over her own tail, and then crawled her way into the darkness behind the bar and slipped down into her tunnels below the ground.
The crashing woke the other members of the clan who blinked at the silhouette in the doorway and then got to their feet and stretched.
"A client?" Espero said. "You mean someone actually came to see us? Hey, you there! Do you have any eggs on you?"
"Eggs?" Said the newcomer. "Why would I have any eggs out here? There's nothing around for hours!"
"There's us." Baku said, slinking up to the newcomer so she could get a better look at him. She traced a claw lightly down his thick neck. "And what is it that brings you out here to visit?"
"Ah ye' know. I've just been wandering here about. Experimenting with things. Thought I'd see what there is to see."
"And do you have shiny treasures on you? Our drinks aren't free, you know." The musical voice of Nako was so soft that it might have been missed entirely if it wasn't for the rather significant hiccup that came with it, followed by the small Fae toppling off the counter on which he'd been resting.
"Well of course I have treasure!" the newcomer laughed.
A hush fell over the interior of the tavern rather suddenly as the clan of tears exchanged glances amongst themselves. The newcomer flicked his forked tongue, tasting the tension in the air.
"Is something the matter?" he asked, a little less sure of himself than he had been only moments before.
"Why would anything be the matter? Baku said slyly. She hooked her arm around his neck and led him further inside. "Come on in and rest in the shade. Set? Fetch the drake a drink, would you?"
Set cast a hurt look at the leviathan but did as he was told, moving around behind the bar to put together a refreshment of some form.
The other raptors began to close in behind the newcomer, and he gulped, beginning to feel a little crowded.
"Oh, what a quaint tavern!" The gentle voice came from just outside the door, and the clan of tears paused in their actions as four new dragons entered, the largest of which being a guardian who had to tuck her wings in a little tighter so they did not brush the sides of the doorway as she entered.
The clan of tears exchanged looks amongst themselves once more before dispersing to tend to the needs of their new customers.
