Biography

Voltak
Implacable Soldier
Lawful Good

PkKAmaj.png
Voltak is a member of the clan's guard, and views the entire clan as his charge. He can often be found standing imposingly near the entrance, intimidating any hapless visitors. He wears the lanterns so that even at night he can guide wanderers to a safe haven. Also because they make him look slightly more friendly.

Voltak's fierce determination to protect the clan often becomes excessive, and it can be quite the ordeal for the next dragon on watch to persuade him to leave his post and get some rest. When it comes to actually defending the clan, he takes to the front lines, attacking with his claws and defending by creating walls of wind with his magic. If that fails, he's covered himself in enough spikes that you'll impale yourself by just thinking about advancing towards him. The massive crossbow he carries is rarely for his own use — he's simply the one who transports it. Voltak sets it up as an emplacement for the other members of the guard to use before he goes running into the fray. While the massive bolts can easily pierce guardian scale, he doesn't fear friendly fire. The bolts are attuned to his magic and will swerve to avoid hitting him — at the cost of being flung off to who knows where.

During the rare hours where he is both awake and off-duty, he usually helps with physical labour around the clan. This is mostly just carrying heavy objects, but it's appreciated none the less. Especially since his wind magic means there's no danger of things being dropped as he flies them around. Often, he's carrying building materials for Marmorata, assisting her in strengthening the clan's defences. He'd help with the planning part as well, but he really doesn't have the tactical mind for it. He's closer to being another obstacle to be placed than the one placing them.

He follows every one of Kokoro's orders without hesitation. Even the idiotic ones. Kokoro tested this once, and now he is incredibly careful about what he says around Voltak. Not that's managed to stop him from accidentally ordering Voltak to jump off a cliff once or twice. It's a good thing dragons can fly.

While he's not the most talkative dragon, Voltak has a habit of making bad jokes in serious situations. He also has by far the largest appetite in the clan. Make sure to get meals ready on time.

Oddly, he's on pretty good terms with a number of beastclans. Generally, they don't like dragons, but they're often willing to make exceptions for a dragon that selflessly fought to protect their homes. Selflessly is a matter of opinion though, as Voltak was really just hoping they'd be thankful enough to feed him whenever he stops by.

Voltak grew up as the fifth hatchling in a large family. They were a tightly knit group, if often short on treasure. He had an entirely uneventful childhood, until eventually he felt the inexorable pull of his search and left on his journey.

His charge pulled him west, until he eventually ended up on the shores of Starwind Bay. Without treasure to book passage on a ship, he had to spend a week and a half trying to convince someone to take him across in exchange for manual labour. Eventually, a fae trader accepted, mostly because her crew was also entirely fae and they could use someone capable of heavy lifting.

Voltak was busy familiarizing himself with the deck of that ship when the entire boat began to rumble. Worried it was sinking, he ran to a railing to check what was going on. But to his amazement, the water wasn't rising, but falling! By the wonders of arcane magic, the ship was taking flight. Voltak doesn't remember too much else of that journey, as he spent the whole ride in amazement over being on sure a large flying object, despite being a rather large flying object himself. He must have been helpful though, as not only did he earn his keep on that ship, when they reached the edge of the Isles his was handed a cloth bag with a sizable amount of treasure.

From there, he flew father west. Then southwards, as he realized the ship had taken him too far north. As the weather got colder, his supplies dwindled, and he spent more time trying to catch fish than actually flying from island to island. Voltak worried he was going to have to fly all the way to the Icefields, until one morning he spotted the crumbling towers of a fortress in the distance. Immediately, he knew whatever clan lived there was his charge, and that it would be his duty to protect it.

And the clan agreed with him. Well, their guard captain did, anyways. A dangerous looking wildclaw, she immediately conscripted him the moment Voltak landed on the clan's island. Before that, even, as a scout had spotted him and reported back before he arrived. At first, Voltak was overjoyed to have found a place where he could protect his charge so quickly and easily. But he quickly realized that the guard captain was abusing her position in the clan, and by working for her he was doing the exact opposite of protecting his charge. And there was nowhere he could turn for help. Back then the clan's leader was Kushiel, who was well-meaning but wasn't strong enough to do anything about the guard captain. All that fae could do was help the other dragons endure her tyranny.

Unfortunately, Voltak was nowhere near strong enough to do anything about his malicious captain either. But he wasn't alone in wanting to do something about her. Before long, one of his fellow guards, a skydancer named Kokoro, invited Voltak into a rebellion that he was planning. Voltak was never quite sure what his purpose in the whole thing was. Kokoro was quite eager to have an ally, as he'd been holding clandestine meetings by himself until that point. Unfortunately, Kokoro didn't seem to have any idea what to do with his new ally. And while Kokoro clearly was full of bravery and fighting spirit, Voltak wasn't convinced that would be enough. So he decided, on his own initiative, to go recruit more members to their rebellion.

Voltak tried to do so, but the old guard captain was infamous around the clan, and everyone he spoke to was too terrified of her to fight back. Dejected, Voltak returned to his and Kokoro's hideout (an ordinary, unused den), only to find the skydancer missing. In a panic, Voltak sprinted out of the hideout, accidentally knocking a few holes in a wall on the way out. He needed to find Kokoro before something awful happened to him!

When he found Kokoro, the skydancer was fine. More than fine, actually. Kushiel was promoting him to captain of the guard as a reward for exceptional valour! The old guard captain had disappeared.. somehow? Voltak was never quite sure what had happened to her. But what he was quite sure of was Kokoro. The skydancer was clearly something else. With him in charge of protecting Voltak's charge, nothing bad would ever happen to Clan _______. For that reason, Voltak swore to follow Kokoro to the ends of Sornieth, and to take every last one of his orders to heart.

And for better or for worse, he's done that.

At times, Voltak still feels self-conscious about not having played a huge role in any dramatic events, unlike seemingly everyone else. But not often. Voltak tries his hardest, and while he may be just a soldier, he's proud of what he's accomplished with his life.
