Biography

Cress
Enchanter
Neutral Good

PkKAmaj.png
Cress is a specialist in the enchantment of various items. He often works on armour and weapons, but when inspiration hits, he'll branch out to various other items. Most of the enchantments he uses himself are bound to his necklace, which is magical to a point that any Arcane dragon within fifteen kilometres can detect it. It used to glow from the sheer density of light-magic enchantments on it, but Cress eventually had to admit that he preferred it when other dragons were willing to look at him and didn't complain about their eyes burning, and conceded to adding a dampening spell on top of everything else.

Proud inventor of self-applying scale wax, a rod that beeps when close to a source of magic (aka: always), and hats that permanently affix themselves to your head so that they don't fall off mid-flight.

His inventions sell quite well, even the ones that many might think no dragon in their right mind would buy. There's a rumour that his creations are very popular for use in pranks by shadow clans. Minya seems to like them, at the very least. That treasure is then spent on more supplies for enchanting, in a beautiful endless cycle of invention that might just bring a tear to your eye. Though that could just be the effects of Cress' onion based projectile reflection coating that he's currently testing.

The tools of an enchanter are wildly varied. Sure, there's various gemstones and crystals (powdered and solid), and all the scrolls and parchments you might expect for magical work. But Cress can't do everything with magic — the physical form of his inventions have to be correct too. Thus Cress's workshop contains wrenches, saws, hammers, and needles, along with a wide variety of devices such as a sewing machine, irons (soldering and regular), and even a small hydraulic press. All of which he uses on the regular, depending on where his inspiration takes him. He's never had a proper lesson on how to use some of this equipment, but that's fine. If he can't figure something out, he can enchant something to make it easier for him! This usually ends with something being destroyed with a laser cutter, but hey laser cutters are cool, and as a light dragon, really, Cress thinks he should be able to just about anything with enough lasers.

He has a massive hoard made out of his less successful creations. A few dragons have caught him sleeping on it, which not only seems incredibly uncomfortable, but is provably dangerous. Cress staunchly believes his creations are harmless, but his feelings aren't going to stop the others from prying him free of a toothed pair of pants.

While at never at a loss for new ideas, Cress isn't too proud to learn from the work of others. Raknakthak's kites are a work of art, as far as he's concerned, and studying them has improved his own enchantments immensely. There's even things to learn from Lumisa's robots, even if he isn't quite sure she has any idea what she's doing. Perhaps it's better to say he's inspired by Lumisa's work. The lessons to be learned from it are more along the lines of what not to do if you don't want everything to inevitably break down in flames.

Cress often tries to convince Primera to try out his creations, but she is a staunch believer in the power of natural tooth and claw. Her only concessions so far have been to a couple of enchantments on her goggles. That, and a painfully simple enchantment to her scalepaint that prevents it from wearing off. If only she'd ask for something more challenging and worthy of his skills!

Primacy is one of the major backers of the enchanter's work. Cress has tried to repay his kindness by creating an enchanted item that will make him a little less... incompetent, but nothing has worked so far.

Due to the nature of his work, Cress spends most of his time cooped up in his workshop, designing his next project. Being a light dragon, he's made sure to set it up in a room with a large window, so he can feel the sun shine on his scales. That, and sometimes he just feels a great need to dive out a window. Usually that would be around when things start smoking.

Back in the Sunbeam Ruins, Cress was part of a small clan built around making jewellery. They'd enchant pearls to give off light, and produce some of the most dazzling accessories in Sornieth. Cress was one of the clan's more promising apprentices; while some of the others were better at metalwork, the pearls he enchanted were more brilliant than anyone else's.

But, in a manner more suited to an Arcane dragon than a Light one, Cress didn't know how to stop. Young and full of ambition, he needed to be the best. So he snuck on down to his local questionably legal gem dealer, and put in an order for the largest pearl possible. When he was nearly crushed by the package he received from the Sea of a Thousand Currents, he knew he was onto something that couldn't be beat.

It took a week of effort, where he did nothing but enchant the pearl and gorge on high-protein glowbugs so that he wouldn't die of magical exhaustion when he passed out for the night, but Cress finished his masterpiece. The most magnificent Sunchaser's Jewellery ever created! And right on schedule, for in two days' time he was set to hand it to the imperial delegate of a much larger clan as a gesture of friendship. Well, less handing and more dramatically revealing from under a tarp. It was far too large for Cress to even think about picking up.

On the fateful day, Cress was beaming with pride. His clan leader sternly told him to stop that, as displaying such a lack of control over his light magic was in very poor form. He still wasn't quite able to contain his excitement, to the point where he just gave up on the speech and skipped right to the reveal.

It's a shame that the delegate wasn't able to see the jewellery. It really was a beautiful piece of work. Unfortunately, the presence of a miniature sun in the room doesn't do wonders for that whole seeing thing, especially when what you're supposed to be seeing is that very same sun. At least she eventually regained her vision. Or at least Cress assumes she did, because he did, eventually. But by that time he'd blindly flown far away from the catastrophically bright pearl, and wasn't really in much of a mood to return home. There was a whole Sornieth out there that lacked dragons who wanted to throw him into the actual sun, after all.
