Pioneer had a strong desire for treasure. She was a more distant member of her pod, keeping in contact from the periphery but happy to hunt for old shipwrecks and lost jewels alone.

Pathfinder sometimes kept her company - he was a dragon always eager to see new things and make discoveries. Crucially, he also wasn't too annoying or distracting.

When he wanted to explore Sornieth above water with the help of their new friend Kelpie, Pioneer decided to keep him company instead. A member of the pod should never be completely alone or separated, and she knew that he was more sensitive to these things than she was. Besides, she like Kelpie - strong and brave, curious and sensible, she had Pioneer's respect.

While Pathfinder went on his forest discoveries, Pioneer stuck to the beach, cliffs and the sea. After their induction to life in Meristema, Pathfinder settled shockingly quickly, finding a mate and a den. While Pioneer had her adoptive nephew to help, she didn't have much else for her in Meristema.

Until she saw a treasure she had to make her own.

Brilliant, shimmering, rich red against stunning white. Adored with ribbons, silks and delicate chains, he was exquisite.

Yes. This new treasure was sentient. A dragon of the finest quality. His majestic, luscious, beautifully kept mane coiffed into the most perfect and precise curls, the rich pinkish-red streaked through with soft gold. And his eyes! Like expertly cut gemstones, the icy blue vibrant against the reds.

His name was Chime. Utterly perfect. She told him she'd protect him (perhaps it was closer to insisting), and slightly bewildered, he agreed. She shared his den, became his chaperone and bodyguard, which he seemed to regard with confused amusement. Telling her (incorrectly) that these efforts were entirely unnecessary.

Her hoarding instincts may have got slightly out of control when she dressed him in all her her finest treasures like a doll. But mostly when she prevented him from leaving the immediate area of the den. The Clan, like the overbearing family they were, staged an intervention. Pioneer had to suffer sessions with Snugs and Satin, who told her that she shouldn't lose sight of the fact that Chime was his own dragon, with his own wishes. That she had to treat him with respect. Pioneer balked at this. She had nothing but respect for Chime. They disagreed.

"Trust is a big part of respect," Snugs said. "If you don't trust him to leave the den, to navigate his own life, how is that respect?"

That made her stop and think. And then he threw in a curve ball.

"If you love something, you have to give it freedom to flourish. To allow them to return to you, to return your love."

Okay. So apparently everyone thought she was Chime's mate. She wasn't. But... maybe. Maybe if she was... that would be a binding oath that would keep them together even if they were apart. Maybe she could give him more freedom then. He was even more beautiful when he was happy- blast it, okay maybe it was love. How was she to know? She just hoped Chime would forgive her for being so overbearing, and that he would accept her as a mate after everything. If he didn't... Well, she didn't want to dwell on that.

First, she apologised. That seemed the most important part to start a new relationship on the right footing. He graciously accepted that (so elegant! Always!), and when she followed up with her proposition, he calmly accepted that too - on one condition. He had been under the impression that Pioneer's behaviour had been an intense Fathom courtship ritual that Chime had been happy to follow along with until it concluded. Now he knew that wasn't the case, he suggested they have a one month courtship period for Pioneer to show that she trusted him and for her to give him the space he needed, and for them to get to know each other. To form a friendship before a lifelong partnership.

Pioneer agreed to these terms, discovering that Chime had a rather goofy sense of humour, a huffy way of snorting, and a penchant for sour fruits that made him grimace. Rather that taking the shine off his beauty, Pioneer found these things to be charming in their own way, and she was able to see (and treat) Chime as a whole, multifaceted individual.
