Biography
Ash's biggest social battle is the perception others have of him as a Coatl with dull plumage. He's got 3 augmetic legs and needs mechanical wings to help him fly, and most assume he was born that way. This is not the case, as Ash was born a very healthy hatchling - and he still is a picture of good health, he's just very clumsy. He had multiple accidents as a hatchling, though only one of these incidents resulted in any permanent damage, and slowly and steadily he keeps acquiring more injuries. Most of his injuries heal though and don't leave much of a mark - he's just lucky like that. He just happened to lose 3 legs at once early in life and most assume that, with his accident-prone nature, were the result of completely separate accidents. Fortunately for Ash, his great-grandfather and his grandmother are talented blacksmiths and such getting prosthetics and keeping them maintained is not really an issue for him. His family do wish he would be a bit more careful and stop earning these prosthetics, but for Ash he doesn't see his antics as really having any consequences - it doesn't matter to him how many of his limbs are organic anymore, after he lost the first one the damage was already done. Losing a few more wasn't going to change an outsider's view of his colouration, and being cautious and reserved was not going to help his case. Ash wants to be the very best he can be, it just happens his job is a little dangerous and he's very clumsy.
The other problem is his primary interest is bones, and this interest has greatly influenced his fashion sense. Combining this with his genetics, Ash had a hard time finding a mate, for a good portion of the Coatls he tried to woo did not wish to see past the visuals - and then if they did, he's very...eccentric. Not only is Ash a paleontologist, he's also a hobbyist bone carver - which is perhaps bordering on the obsessive when it comes to bones. However, Ash didn't really try too hard to convince those prospective mates he was a good match for them, only really going through the motions to appease his mother, who figured a mate would be good for him and perhaps get him to slow down and maybe take more care of himself. As Ash saw it, if they were going to judge him on his colouration, they were not worth his time, for it was not only an insult to him, but his family line, and Ash doesn't think it's his job to educate them on why they are wrong. So when his mother set up a meeting for him with a prospective mate, Ash was irritated and refused to go. He told his mother he would find a mate on his own terms and in his own time. A few days later, he bumped into a Coatl wearing a crown of bones and fell in love instantly. What he doesn't know is that his mate is exactly the same Coatl his mother tried to set him up on a date with.
