A natural mimic, Shadowspark never had any difficulty learning the languages of the Beastclans and attempting to communicate with them. Some see him as an eccentric, risking life and limb in an attempt to communicate with such unpredictable and often aggressive creatures. Still, he has always been both incredibly lucky and incredibly cunning, and avoids harm on every expedition.

Some say that, as he was hatched at the darkest point of the year, he must have been blessed by the Shadowbinder herself. Indeed, the strange markings on his body would seem to be indicative of this. It is quite possible that the reason no harm comes to him is that the Beastclans are frightened of retribution should he be harmed. Of course, he is personally not aware of this influence. It also certainly can't hurt that he is nearly constantly being monitored by his Guardian, Chord, who watches from the shadows and ensures his safety. Nevertheless, he attributes his good fortune to his patient, understanding demeanor.

He works to spread the ideal of "listening with one's heart." The Beastclans, he asserts, are just as worthy of life, compassion, and understanding as dragons are. Perhaps this philosophy is the real reason that he is never hurt on expeditions into Beastclan territory. He longs for an end to the fighting between dragons and Beastclans. Until then, he works to maintain an understanding between the local Beastclans and his own clan.
