At first glance, Montgomery's position in the clan appears to be a practically useless one. Philosophy does not have any real, tangible benefit for the clan as a whole, and some of the more pragmatic clan members see him as a bit of a freeloader. However, his constant questioning and examination of some of the fundamental questions of dragon life has inspired a good number of important conversations, especially in regards to how the clan operates in relation to the outside world. In fact, some of Montgomery's musings have inspired Sunrunner's judgments.

In his own mind, he is simply living up to his destiny as a creature of contradictions. He is a Shadow Imperial, a creature of both light and darkness. He does honor to his mother's flight of origin through the Wind-inspired tattoos on his body, but he primarily sees himself as a creature of Light and of Shadow. As an Imperial, he is descended from a long line of dragons created specially by the Lightweaver. As a Shadow dragon, and the son of a Nocturne blessed by the Shadowbinder, he does homage to his Mother in the shadows, as well.

His philosophy, then, focuses primarily on the concept of duality and paradoxes. Philosophy is, of course, a favorite study among Light dragons. His own philosophical musings, however, frequently take on the nature of puzzles and riddles--appropriate for his Shadow upbringing and birthright.
