 The nights are drawing in fast over Meristema now. The sun has already dipped below the horizon so rapidly that Basic hadn't even been aware of a sunset. A low mist rolls across the grass, and the full moon conjures long shadows that scare some of the youngesters. They have undoubtedly been telling each scary stories and making each other paranoid about what may lurk in the dark. But perhaps Basic should check in and make sure the tales Amyas is telling the Clan over candlelight aren't too scary. Tonight is, of course, Halloween. But there's nothing to be afraid of in Conch and Basic's den. They've been given four little treats. A few weeks ago, Conch began a notable moult - her scales coming in appearing darker and then new textures and patterns became apparent. This had happened to her twice before, and each time she took it as a sign of new strength and health that could be passed on in her family. So they'd built a fresh nest, and now there were four eggs, ready to hatch. Basic thought Conch was absolutely stunning. He always had, but the shimmering blues that now mottled her back complimented the teal of her belly, and he didn't think he'd ever tire of tracing her dark markings. "Basic, my love, look," she drew his attention from where he'd been tracing the delicate circles on her tail. Basic barely sees the egg shake before a pale paw bursts through the top, just like Amyas described the undead bursting from the ground. This child is very much alive though, thank goodness, and immediately starts squealing as they try to shove their snout through the hole their leg still occupies. As the first struggles, the second emerges. It's obvious already that this one is a Guardian, powerful and strong. Each leg comes through easily, and Basic laughs at this child that is currently just an egg on legs before taking pity and helping her out. The third is happily munching on his eggshell, head emerged but nothing else. His eyes and belly are vibrant against his dark scales. The last has been rather still, but when Basic peers over, he sees this child has chipped away a suitable hole but just hasn't come out of it yet. The little one looks up at his father with dark eyes and Basic notices this one shares Conch's new pattern and colour that he loves so much. — Written by SilentWanderer |
